Michael van Gerwen has pulled out of the Players Championship 16, with his close friend Vincent van der Voort giving a worrying update about the darts legend.
The 36-year-old Dutchman, who has struggled to reach the same heights he managed earlier in his career in recent years, made the decision to withdraw after a first-round exit in the previous edition of the tournament.
Three-time world champion Van Gerwen suffered a 6-5 defeat at the hands of world No. 96 Dominik Gruellich, marking his sixth first-round loss in this year's PDC ProTour.
And his friend and fellow dartist, Van der Voort, admitted he is worried about Van Gerwen's performances and behaviour at the oche when speaking on the Darts Draait Door podcast.
"When I see how things are going, the belief just isn't there," Van der Voort pointed out. "His presence is lacking, there's no aggression or passion in his game. It's just about throwing at the board and hoping for the best."
Van Gerwen's current form also puts him at risk of missing the finals night of the Premier League Darts.

MVG has been a regular fixture at The O2 Arena play-off night, winning the tournament a record seven times and only failing to make The O2 once in 12 years, during the Covid-hit 2020 edition.
Yet, he currently sits in 4th place, just one point ahead of Nathan Aspinall, despite not having a single nightly win to his name.
With only two more nights before finals night, in Aberdeen and Sheffield, the pressure is certainly mounting.
Van Gerwen missed the Premier League Darts night in Berlin due to a bizarre neck injury he got while trying on shirts.

"When you face the past, you have your back against the future. You have to look to the future.
"I changed darts for a reason. To get my mind off things. When you aren't 100 per cent comfortable, it's a nice thing, but it didn't work out the way I wanted it to.
"It's not the most pleasant moment in my career. I'll never give up. I'll fight for everything. I know it's still there. You don't lose talent like that."

Martindale: ‘I'd put my money on Tony Bloom'
Businessman Tony Bloom has undoubtedly achieved with a provincial club, Brighton and Hove Albion, preserving their top flight status in England and taking the South Coast club into Europe. Now, he has invested nearly £10m in Heart of Midlothian FC and was a spectator as the Gorgie club earned three points to open their William Hill Premiership campaign on a high with a 2-0 home win over Aberdeen on Monday. On the eve of the game, Bloom reiterated his desire to split Scotland's big two, Celtic and Rangers, and David Martindale, Livingston's straight-talking manager, warned critics not to discount the Brighton chairman who now as a stake of just over 29 per cent in Hearts. History may be against Bloom as the Old Firm have won every league title between them since Aberdeen won in 1985 under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson. Martindale (pictured by Nigel Duncan), however, told a media briefing at the Home of the Set Fare Arena: 'If I was a betting man, I would put my money on Tony Bloom achieving what he said he wants to achieve. 'I'd put my chips behind him because he's shown what he can do.' He was there to preview his club's home William Hill Premiership clash with newly-promoted Falkirk who pipped Martindale's men for last season's Championship. The pair clash at 3pm on Saturday. Livingston earned a valuable point on the road at Rugby Park last Saturday, coming from 2-0 down with goals from Robbie Muirhead and Scott Pittman, while Falkirk also drew their season-opener at home to Dundee United last Sunday. It finished in a 2-2 draw, Dylan Tait and Ethan Ross netting. Martindale does not expect there to be much between the teams but he praised his men for their character and resilience in last weekend's game, and he added: 'We deserved something from the game, we deserved a point, minimum. 'They boys stuck to the task and we were a wee bit unlucky to be two goals down, we stuck to the process, stuck to the tactics, overall, the performance was there.' He added: 'Falkirk as a club have done tremendously well, and John (McGlynn) has done a great job. The club, John and the players should take a lot of credit and they are back in the Premiership. 'We had good games last year, there was nothing in the games, I don't think there will be anything in this game and it will be a tight affair.' He added: 'I am looking forward to the game, we are at home and there is a lot of familiarity and continuity there with both teams. We've probably had a bigger turn around in terms of numbers but, in terms of the starting side, there is not a huge difference.' Martindale may add to his side as he has suffered early-season injuries one, in particular, to midfielder, Aidan Denholm who he secured from Hearts, but he added: 'If the window shut tomorrow I would be fairly happy with what we have got, but potentially we could strengthen one or two.' Injuries have set the West Lothian club back in 'the middle of the park', and Martindale revealed: 'We are quietly active on that front, but that is us reacting to injuries, if I am being honest.' Jimmy Thelin confirms Aberdeen contract talks ongoing with Shayden Morris and other Scottish Cup final heroes
A number of Dons players are into the final year of their contracts in the Granite City Jimmy Thelin has confirmed that contract talks are ongoing with Shayden Morris and several others from Aberdeen 's Scottish Cup-winning squad. The fans' favourite has been the subject of several failed bids from Luton Town. The winger, 23, is out-of-contract at the end of the season and the Dons are trying to extend that deal. The likes of captain Graeme Shinnie, Dante Polvara and Ester Sokler are others who are now in the final year of their Pittodrie contracts. Thelin admitted: 'I think it's a question for Steven (Gunn, Aberdeen's director of football), but we have on-going talks with a lot of players. Let's see.' The Swede knows that when you are successful and you have good players, like Morris, then there is going to be interest. Thelin has insisted he can't worry about what he cannot impact. It is about working with what he has, while he has it and trying to improve his players, his squad, his staff and himself. Thelin acknowledged: 'I think we always have dialogue with all our players and when the time is right, the time is right. 'I don't go into specific players, but of course we have good players and other clubs have eyes on our players also. That's the reality we live in. 'But as long as you're a player, a manager, you have to always focus where you are. 'Otherwise, you stop growing and performing. 'So it's important to always stay in the moment and then what happens, after you're controlling one way, that will happen. 'But when you're a player or a manager, you have to focus where you are.' Aberdeen's model is and has been for several years based on a player trading model. They regularly sell on talent and that has been the case in recent years from Scott McKenna to the likes of Calvin Ramsay, Lewis Ferguson, Bojan Miovski, Ross McCrorie and Ylber Ramadani. This summer has been no different. Another cup hero in Pape Gueye has since been sold to Turkish side Kasimpasa earlier this month. Thelin knows others could go before the close of the window and it is about being proactive rather than being reactive. The Aberdeen manager, when asked about more out-goings, answered: 'No, I think it's difficult to speculate. I think we're taking it day by day now, week by week and the window is still one month away from closing. 'So that's why it's so difficult to see what's going to happen in the future. We have to focus on now. "We have a competitive game on Sunday and then the rest of the thing is going on in the background. The window is open, so you never know if someone comes in for a player or if you need to rebalance your squad or whatever. 'But we have to focus right now. As long as the window is open, it's on-going work. 'Even when the window is closed, the recruitment department keeps working to the next window. I think when everybody's aligned, they're aligned then things happen.'

Ryan Reynolds' huge Wrexham transfer budget revealed as spending set to continue
Ryan Reynolds' huge Wrexham transfer budget revealed as spending set to continue Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has been given a hefty sum to spend in the current transfer window, with reports suggesting he still has a sizeable amount left in his budget Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac's Wrexham transfer kitty still has plenty of money left (Image: Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images) Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson might still have nearly half of his transfer budget left, despite already securing eight new players. The ex-Bolton and Bradford boss has received substantial support from the North Wales club's Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac during the summer window. More is expected to come after Wrexham achieved their third consecutive promotion to escape League One in April. Since then, Parkinson has introduced a host of new signings in preparation for life in the Championship, with an ambitious two-year plan reportedly in place to reach the Premier League. As per a Daily Mail report, a total summer budget of £20million was agreed upon before the window opened. More of this could be spent before the Red Dragons commence their campaign with a challenging match at Southampton on Saturday, where the starting line-up is expected to include several new recruits. Wales and Sheffield United striker Kieffer Moore and Leicester City defender Conor Coady are the latest arrivals in deals believed to be worth £2m each. Wrexham have already shattered their club transfer record twice this summer, beginning with the signing of left-back Liberato Cacace from Italian team Empoli for an initial fee of £2.16m. That record was smashed once more with the signing of Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien in a deal the Mail reports is valued at £3m. They also splashed out £1.2m for Bolton midfielder George Thomason and £750,000 on Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie. Leicester and Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward and Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass were both snapped up without transfer fees. Article continues below Ipswich Town's Nathan Broadhead (right) is the latest signing being pursued by Wrexham (Image: PA) Despite the considerable spending spree, it's understood that Wrexham have utilised just £11.1m of their original transfer kitty. This comes as they continue pursuing a £7.5m deal for a third Welsh international in Ipswich forward Nathan Broadhead - though that transfer is awaiting approval from manager Kieran McKenna. An even bolder approach was attempted earlier in the transfer window to lure former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen to the Racecourse Ground. Whilst the proposal was ultimately turned down, the Denmark international's representative praised Wrexham's project. "Wrexham are really upgrading everything both on and off the field and it is a hugely impressive project, as you can see from the presence of people like [chief executive] Michael [Williamson] there," Eriksen's agent Martin Schoots said. Fans can watch the series with a £4.99 monthly plan, or get 12 months for the price of 10 by paying for a year upfront. Rather than merely being content to survive, Wrexham seem to be gearing up for a genuine attempt to cement their place in the Championship this coming season. Reynolds and Mac, who recently altered his surname from McElhenney, have been transparent about their ambition of guiding the club to the Premier League. Former Ipswich and Crystal Palace midfielder Darren Ambrose, who has experience in both the Premier League and Championship, believes Wrexham's promotion prospects this season are not to be underestimated. Speaking to Betway, he said: "I've tipped them to make the play-offs this year. I think with the board behind Wrexham, I won't rule it out. You cannot rule out anything in the Championship and they're signing a lot of good players as well from other clubs in the division. "Kieffer Moore has signed, there's rumours that Jamie Vardy could join, and rumours about Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich as well. I played under Phil Parkinson at Charlton, and he's a very driven individual. He will know the expectations at that football club. Article continues below "He'll know that four promotions on the bounce - we probably won't ever see that again, so he'll be doing everything he can to do that, and I think they'll make the play-offs. If they get to the play-offs, then you never know."
