Origin ace Cherrington has a laugh at QLD's expense

Yahoo15-05-2025

Kennedy Cherrington is revelling in her role as NSW's chief wind-up merchant after the forward stood over the top of Chelsea Lenarduzzi and mocked her Queensland rival.
After the Blues wrapped up the women's State of Origin series with a game to spare in a 26-6 win on Thursday, an image was widely circulated online which showed Cherrington laughing at Lenarduzzi after she had made an error in the first half.
The image bears a striking resemblance to one taken of NSW men's five-eighth Jarome Luai after he shouted in the face of Queensland forward Felise Kaufusi during the 2021 series.

Cherrington took great pleasure in getting one over Lenarduzzi, who was recalled to the Queensland set-up with the purpose of beefing up an undersized Maroons pack.
Shown a comparison of her triumphant stance next to Luai's, Cherrington told AAP: "She made an error and I laughed at her… that's Origin footy.
"You've got to let them know and this is Origin, you've got to express yourself.
"I love expressing myself and being my authentic self.
"It's about having my teammates' back and if there's more eyes on our footy, then I'd love that."
Cherrington was part of a Blues pack who showed their Queensland counterparts no respect on a sodden night at Sydney's Allianz Stadium.
The Blues outmuscled and outfought the Maroons in every department and their victory has set up a golden opportunity for NSW to rub in their rivals' faces once more.
The 2025 series is just the second decided over three games and after Queensland came from behind to win 2-1, Cherrington has revenge on her mind for game three in Newcastle on May 29.
"Last year, they won the first ever three-game series and we want to go another level and sweep for the first time in a women's series," Cherrington said.
"Yes, we won the series, but we've got one job, it's 70 minutes away and we have to step up another level."
Meanwhile, Blues coach John Strange is confident strike centre Jess Sergis will be fit to play game three after being subbed off at halftime with a neck injury.
"She was a bit disorientated," Strange said.
"About 15 minutes after fulltime she started to get back to herself.
"Whether she plays game three, that'll be up to the doctors. We won't be pushing anyone to play if they're not ready."

State of Origin ramifications after Queensland players caught in ugly scenes

Kalyn Ponga's job as Queensland State of Origin fullback appears safe as houses after Reece Walsh and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow produced some ordinary moments in defence over the weekend. Former NRL player Denan Kemp had suggested last week that Maroons coach Billy Slater should seriously think about axing Ponga for Origin 3. The superstar fullback had four missed tackles and two costly errors in Game 2, while only running for 77 metres from eight carries. Despite the fact Queensland won Game 2 to send the series to a decider, Kemp declared the Maroons can't afford to have their fullback making simple errors. Whether or not Ponga heard the criticism remains to be seen, but he came out and had his best game in weeks on Saturday as the Knights shocked the Dolphins 26-20. And the leading contenders to replace him as Maroons fullback - Walsh and Tabuai-Fidow - didn't do much to press their claims. Ponga had two try-assists and five tackle breaks, running for 179 metres and looking more dangerous than he has in weeks. He didn't have a single error and only missed one tackle in Newcastle's shock win. If Slater was thinking about axing Ponga due to his defence, the actions of Tabuai-Fidow and Walsh wouldn't have done much to convince him. Tabuai-Fidow had a shocker in the final seconds on Saturday afternoon, failing to contest a bomb from Ponga and accidentally kicking it back to the Knights. Bradman Best then set up Brodie Jones for the match-winning try, which came directly from Tabuai-Fidow's mistake. The Dolphins fullback did score a try and ran for 237 metres, but the game-changing gaffe wouldn't have impressed Slater. As for Walsh, he had a blinder with ball in hand as the Broncos beat the Sharks 34-28. The 22-year-old had two try-assists, three line-break assists and four tackle breaks, running for 182 metres. But once again it was his work on the defensive side that let him down. As well as being visibly hampered by a knee injury, he let second-rower Teig Wilton run around him with ease to set up a try for Will Kennedy in the first half. With heavy strapping on his right knee, Walsh was caught out of position on a number of Cronulla tries. Wilton breaks through to put Kennedy over! 💪 #NRLBroncosSharks Telstra Moment of the Match. — NRL (@NRL) June 22, 2025 While Walsh and Tabuai-Fidow are electric with ball in hand, it's unlikely Slater would trust their defence if he wanted to make a switch with Ponga. Speaking last week, former Broncos and Warriors winger Kemp said the Maroons will "lose by 30-plus" if Ponga has another shocker under the high ball in Origin 3. RELATED: Blow for Titans and Queensland after Origin hopeful ruled out NRL fans all say same thing after Latrell Mitchell's NRL stunner The $1.4 million fullback missed a key tackle on Brian To'o for one of the NSW winger's three tries, and was caught out of position when Angus Crichton streamed through to ground a grubber from Jarome Luai. He also had a poor miss on Nathan Cleary, but got lucky the try was disallowed for an obstruction. "He dropped three bombs. He got bounced off by Cleary and got lucky there was an obstruction," Kemp said. "I think Billy has to have a real hard look at that fullback position. I think KP (Ponga) is just out of form. "It's tough but if you've got that many errors, it's just a real question we (Queensland) have to ask ourselves. We need someone who's bringing energy around the ruck, making their catches and tackles. It's definitely a question that I think Billy should be considering because we can't afford to go into Game 3 and have that many dropped balls. We'll lose by 30-plus."

Cruel blow for Titans and Queensland as State of Origin hopeful ruled out

The Gold Coast Titans were reportedly left fuming on Sunday night when Jayden Campbell was ruled to have a category 1 concussion, despite passing his head injury assessment in the dressing rooms. And it could have State of Origin ramifications for Billy Slater and Queensland. Campbell was ordered off the field in the first half of the Titans' 36-20 loss to Parramatta, after an innocuous incident in which he appeared to cop a knock from a teammate. The Titans halfback lay prone on the ground for a few seconds, which resulted in the independent doctor ruling him a category 1. The cat-1 ruling meant Campbell was automatically ruled out for the rest of the game, and will now miss Gold Coast's Round 17 clash with the Cowboys due to the 11-day stand down protocol. But the Titans reportedly felt the independent doctor acted too hastily, especially after Campbell passed his head injury assessment in the sheds. Jake Duke of Fox League reported the Titans were filthy that Campbell had been ruled out straight away, and couldn't come back into the action. Unless the Gold Coast can prove that Campbell didn't suffer a concussion - and that his initial symptoms were not indicative of concussion - and he passed all subsequent testing, he won't be playing next week either. Slater will pick his team for the series decider at the end of Round 17, and with Campbell not playing he won't be able to press his case for an unlikely call-up. Many have suggested Campbell would be the perfect bench utility in Origin - or a valuable 18th man at the very least. Should the Maroons suffer an injury in the back-line between now and Origin 3, it's not inconceivable that Campbell would come into contention. Slater picked Kurt Mann as his bench utility in Game 2, and Ezra Mam as 18th man. But Campbell actually covers more positions than Mam, and with the Titans on the bye in Round 18 (when Origin players aren't allowed to play club footy), he might have been a more desirable selection so Mam was available for the Broncos. RELATED: Reece Walsh in concerning scenes amid State of Origin calls NRL fans all say same thing after Latrell Mitchell stunner The loss of Campbell on Sunday night proved costly for the Titans, who are now dead-last with four wins and 10 losses. They had the same record as the Eels heading into their Round 16 clash, but Parramatta have now jumped two points ahead. Titans coach Des Hasler said Tom Weaver will replace Campbell at halfback next week. "He's OK," Hasler said about Campbell. "We've got young Tommy Weaver there. Tommy will come in and fill that role, at first thought anyway, if JC (Campbell), which is more than likely, is not to play (against the Cowboys)." Campbell's absence left the goal-kicking duties to second-rower Beau Fermor, who had never kicked a goal at first-grade level before Sunday night. He managed only one from three attempts, and Hasler might be forced to make a change in that department against the Cowboys. with AAP

Payten threatens axe on 'bullied' Cowboys

Todd Payten has warned he could swing the axe after admitting North Queensland were bullied by the Sydney Roosters as they fell to a second straight thrashing. Payten described the Cowboys' 42-8 loss as looking like boys against men at times, as his team conceding four tries in the space of 10 minutes in the second half. Halfback Tom Dearden also conceded he was "horrible", backing up four days after winning his first State of Origin game wearing the Queensland No.7 jersey. Semi-finalists last year, the Cowboys are now in an almighty rut. Payten's men have won just one match since Magic Round, dropping five and drawing one to Penrith. They have let in an average of 36 points a game through that period, including 100 points alone in the past fortnight to the Dolphins and Cowboys. Collins crashes over 👊 #NRLRoostersCowboys — NRL (@NRL) June 22, 2025 Questions also remain around the halves pairing of Dearden and Jaxon Purdue, with the latter moved from centre to five-eighth a month ago. But their biggest issue has been a woeful completion rate through that period, with Payten labelling them the NRL's worst team for errors out of their own end. Adding to that is the fact the Cowboys have completed at above 75 per cent just twice in their past seven games. Asked after the loss to the Roosters whether changes were possible, Payten indicated it was on his mind. "We'll be considering it, definitely, off the back of the past few weeks," he said. "We'll have a look at what is underneath and then reassess and get to work." Payten also refused to use the Origin period as an excuse, with the Cowboys having four players coming in and out of camp in the past month. "It's not an excuse, far from it," Payten said. "Not a contributing factor one little bit. "You look at some other teams across the competition (who) have handled it perfectly and we have done so in the past. So it's irrelevant. "It's disappointing, and far from good enough. "We got bullied, it was men against boys there for a little bit and that's concerning." Payten's threat came as Dearden also made a scathing assessment of his own performance, which included conceding an intercept pass for a Mark Nawaqanitawase try. The Cowboys had balls hitting the ground in attack, while Dearden was responsible for five missed tackles. "The body felt good, I was ready to go," Dearden said of backing up from Origin. "I'm really disappointed in my performance. I thought I was horrible tonight."
