Where Florida football stands with DJ Lagway, quarterback room after spring practice
College football's spring practice season is well in the rearview mirror now, as programs around the nation begin to turn their attention to the summer sessions that are coming up on the schedule.
The good news for the Florida Gators is that their star quarterback, rising sophomore DJ Lagway, appears to be back on track after being held out of throwing drills and scrimmages during the spring months. It is now expected that he will be ready for UF's organized team activities when June rolls around.
With that in mind, The Athletic's Antonio Morales presented his post-spring update, looking at where each of the Power Four's programs stand at the quarterback position. He offered the following on Lagway, plus a note on another signal-caller who saw plenty of practice time in his absence.
"DJ Lagway is the face of the program but was limited this spring and didn't throw while recovering from shoulder soreness that has lingered for months. That provided Louisville transfer Harrison Bailey with plenty of reps this spring."
DJ Lagway's 2024 stats
The 6-foot-3-inch, 239-pound signal caller out of Willis, Texas, appeared in 12 of Florida's 13 games last season while logging seven starts. The Gators won six of those games he opened up under center, with the lone loss coming against the Georgia Bulldogs in Jacksonville — a game he was knocked out of with a lower-body injury after rallying his team in the first half.
Lagway completed 59.9% of his passes for 1,915 yards and 12 touchdowns against nine interceptions last fall. He also amassed a multitude of accolades, including a spot on the FWAA Freshman All-American Team, as well as ESPN Freshman All-American, 247Sports True Freshman All-American, On3 True Freshman All-American, PFF True Freshman All-American, CFN Freshman Quarterback of the Year and All-American, plus the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl MVP award.

Florida Football Dealt Bad News on Tuesday
Florida Football Dealt Bad News on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Florida Gators are heading into a 2025 season that will have plenty of hope, expectations and pressure surrounding it. Advertisement Head coach Billy Napier spent most of last season on the hot seat before it was revealed he'd be given another chance in 2025. The Gators ended up finishing 8-5, securing the program's first season above .500 since 2020. As he and the team look to build off of their strong finish to the year, they have been dealt with a bit of adversity on Tuesday. As reported by the Gainesville Sun, one of the members of the team's 2025 recruiting class was arrested and taken to the Alachua Regional Juvenile Detention Center. The player's information was released due to the fact that they are 17-years-old. However, Kevin Brockway was able to confirm what the player was detained for. "An incoming Florida football freshman has been arrested on a third-degree felony charge of false imprisonment (dating violence) following an alleged altercation on June 1," Brockway wrote. Florida Gators head coach Billy Medley-USA TODAY Sports The school did release a statement on the matter as well, but are still in the investigative process. Advertisement "We will continue to gather facts, cooperate with and monitor the legal and administrative process," the spokesperson told Brockway. The report revealed that the incident occurred after a verbal argument occurred following the player finding something on the victim's cellular device. It then became "physical" as the unnamed player pushed the victim onto a bed and shook her, while holding her down. Brockway also confirmed that the alleged victim accused the player of choking her, punching her in the face, preventing her from leaving and throwing her phone at a wall. While the player is not named, the report did reveal they weighed "close to 400 pounds," outweighing the alleged victim by over 200 pounds. The player reportedly denied choking the alleged victim, and also denied preventing her from leaving. Florida Lands Monster 6-Foot-8 OT on Sunday
Florida Lands Monster 6-Foot-8 OT on Sunday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Billy Napier collected another pass protector for young standout quarterback DJ Lagway on Sunday. Though Chancellor Campbell still has one more high school season to play at Lakewood (Fla.), he'll be joining the Florida Gators as part of the Class of 2026. Advertisement "BREAKING: Class of 2026 OT Chancellor Campbell has Committed to Florida, he tells me for @on3recruits," Hayes Fawcett wrote Sunday on X. "The 6'8 307 OT from St. Petersburg, FL chose the Gators over Georgia, Ohio State, & Penn State. 'Gator Boys Stay Hot!'" 247Sports rates Campbell as a three-star prospect and a top-50 offensive tackle prospect nationally. He joins interior offensive lineman G'Nivre Carr as Gators blocking pledges in the Class of 2026. Florida Gators head coach Billy Bush-Imagn Images "First-off-the-bus type of offensive tackle with best-in-class type of length measurements," 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins wrote in a scouting report on Sunday. "Still figuring out how to navigate all the challenges that come with being a quarterback's bodyguard, but put extremely encouraging stretches of play on tape spring before his senior year. Advertisement "Should be viewed as a high-upside corner protector with NFL traits that's going to need time to figure things out, but one that could be well worth the investment." Campbell visited the Georgia Bulldogs last weekend before taking the trip to Gainesville this weekend. According to 247Sports, he's scheduled to visit Ohio State and Penn State this month, as well. Campbell's older brother, Chamberlain, was a former defensive lineman at Ole Miss. He entered the transfer portal earlier this offseason.
