Los Angeles Chargers release Joey Bosa
The Los Angeles Chargers have released defensive end Joey Bosa, parting ways with the four-time Pro Bowler amid salary cap concerns.
Outside linebacker Khalil Mack made his ninth Pro Bowl in 2024 with the Los Angeles Chargers. Now, the one-time Defensive Player of the Year will return to Los Angeles for the 2025 season.
Mack has agreed to re-sign with the Chargers on a one-year, fully guaranteed $18 million contract before the start of free agency.
A person close to the situation confirmed the terms of the deal to USA TODAY Sports' Tyler Dragon. The person spoke on condition of anonymity given the sensitivity of the matter.
The No. 5 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft spent the first four years of his career with the Las Vegas (then-Oakland) Raiders.
He won Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2016 and racked up 40.5 sacks over four seasons with the Raiders. Ahead of the 2018 season, the Raiders traded Mack to the Chicago Bears for a package including two first-round picks. The Raiders spent those first-round selections on running back Josh Jacobs (2019 NFL draft) and cornerback Damon Arnette (2020).
Mack spent four years in Chicago and made the Pro Bowl three times (2018-20). He played just seven games in his final year with the Bears in 2021 because of a foot injury. Ahead of the 2022 season, the Bears traded Mack to the Chargers for a second-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft and gave away a sixth-round pick in 2023. Former Bears linebackers coach Brandon Staley, then the Chargers' head coach, reunited with Mack in Los Angeles.
Mack's 2022 season in Los Angeles was solid with eight sacks and another Pro Bowl nod. Despite the Chargers' struggles in 2023, Mack set a career-high with 17 sacks at age 32. He missed just one game over three years with the Chargers.
Mack avoids hitting free agency again.

Can Eagles' Jalen Hurts Reach New Heights in 2025?

Can Eagles' Jalen Hurts Reach New Heights in 2025? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has done more in his first four years with the team than any other quarterback in club history. Advertisement Since he became a starter in 2021, the Oklahoma product is a two-time Pro Bowler, an All-Pro, has been to the Super Bowl twice, won once, and is a Super Bowl MVP. Few quarterbacks in history have that kind of record throughout their entire career - let alone their first four seasons. As Hurts is preparing for his fifth season as a starter, and sixth in the NFL, expectations around him are split. Some analysts want to see the quarterback take a natural progression as a passer in a similar way that Russell Wilson did when he was a young Super Bowl champion with Seattle. Others look past the numbers altogether. So long as Philly wins, Hurts' legacy will remain elite. When the Eagles took Hurts in the second round of the 2020 draft, they looked at him in a similar light that they did Wilson back in 2012. They weren't able to get the Wisconsin product then, and were hellbent on making sure that wouldn't happen again eight years later. Advertisement It worked out for them. Hurts has been the kind of leader and winner teams beg for in a starting quarterback. Can he reach new heights as a Super Bowl champion now? Hurts' numbers aren't bad. He has a career completion percentage of over 64%, has thrown for close to 15,000 yards, and has an 85:39 touchdown-to-interception ratio. These numbers are good. They can be a whole lot better. That's where Hurts is now. He is a proven winner with the talent around him. If he can improve as a passer and bolster his numbers, his standing as not only one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but the greatest quarterback in franchise history will be unchallenged for good. Advertisement It'll certainly help his future candidacy if he puts up numbers that push for the Hall of Fame as well. Raiders Insider Provides Update On Second-Round Pick's Contract Situation

Raiders Insider Provides Update On Second-Round Pick's Contract Situation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Las Vegas Raiders have completely retooled their wide receiver room ahead of the 2025 NFL season. After trading Davante Adams to the New York Jets last year, the team has needed another wideout to step up alongside Jakobi Meyers. Advertisement 2023 third-rounder Tre Tucker is the obvious candidate, but the team still utilized three picks on wide receivers in this year's draft. They took TCU's Jack Bech in the second round, Tennessee's Dont'e Thornton in the fourth round, and Montana State's Tommy Mellott in the sixth round. While both Thornton and Mellott have signed, however, Bech is yet to put pen to paper for the Silver and Black. Las Vegas Raiders WR Jack Bech (18).Andrew Dieb-Imagn Images With mandatory minicamp approaching on June 10, Bech will not be allowed to participate if he is not under contract. The Las Vegas Review-Journal's Vincent Bonsignore recently provided an update about his contract situation and if there is any reason to be concerned. Advertisement "No (there is no concern about Bech's contract)," Bonsignore wrote. "Bech has been a full participant during OTAs. His contract will get sorted out." This is music to the ears of Raider Nation, who know all-too-well what can happen when a rookie sits out too long. It seems like the finer details are being resolved, and the team can expect him to be at mandatory minicamp. Bech is in a difficult spot, as no second-rounders from this year's draft have signed their contract yet outside of picks No. 33 and No. 34. The Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns set a precedent by signing these players -- Jayden Higgins and Carson Schwesinger -- to fully-guaranteed deals. Now, every agent of a second-round pick is attempting to get their player a fully-guaranteed contract, which typically only happens for first-rounders. Bech was the No. 58 pick, which is in the latter half of the second round, so it may be a reach to get that level of guarantees. Advertisement However, Bech will sign eventually and join the team, it will simply be a matter of how lucrative his contract is before ever playing an NFL snap. Unexpected Rookie Taking First-Team Reps at Raiders OTAs

Unexpected Rookie Taking First-Team Reps at Raiders OTAs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. John Spytek is taking a different approach as the general manager of the Las Vegas Raiders. He and new head coach Pete Carroll let several big contributors leave during free agency this offseason in favor of other players. Advertisement Their decision to let both starting linebackers go and part ways with four of their five starting defensive backs was met with a bit of hesitancy from Raider Nation. However, they have built both a younger and cheaper roster than last year's four-win team, which is promising for a franchise that has long struggled. With cornerbacks Nate Hobbs and Jack Jones no longer with the Silver and Black, the team added 2021 first-rounder Eric Stokes during free agency and used a third-round pick on Iowa State's Darien Porter. Las Vegas Raiders CB Darien Porter (10).Vasha Hunt-Imagn Images Porter was seen as a bit of a project considering he switched from wide receiver to cornerback while in college. He started just seven games at cornerback for the Cyclones, but the Las Vegas Review-Journal's Vincent Bonsignore reported that he was taking first-team reps during Raiders OTAs. Advertisement "Based on the work he got in OTAs — he's been working with the first team opposite Eric Stokes — Porter is either on the fast track to a major role or the Raiders are throwing as much as possible at him to help expedite his development," Bonsignore wrote. This news is a bit unexpected considering 2023 fourth-round pick Jakorian Bennett was above-average in his starting role last season and both Stokes and Decamerion Richardson have more experience. It is no surprise, however, that the team is investing heavily in Porter because he embodies everything that Pete Carroll loves in a cornerback. At nearly 6-foot-4 with 33 and 1/8-inch arms, he has the ideal frame and physical play style that Carroll covets in a defensive back. Carroll may be throwing the rookie into the fire during OTAs and plans on implementing Bennett as a starter once he is fully recovered from his shoulder injury. However, it is also possible that Carroll found a diamond in the rough once again and the Raiders will rely on Porter heavily as a rookie.
