According to a release by the district administration, officials met locals on Saturday over their demands. Though the protesters who had initially raised objections did not attend the meeting, several representatives from the affected coastal villages participated in the discussion, it said.
The villagers' demands include higher compensation for land to be acquired for the Vadhvan greenfield highway,
employment opportunities
for locals in the port project, and compensation and rehabilitation measures for fishermen who may lose their livelihood.

Deputy Collector Mahesh Sagar said during the meeting that JNPT (
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust
) has agreed in principle to prioritise the local residents for employment opportunities in the project, according to the release.
The district administration also clarified that a comprehensive compensation policy for fishermen is under preparation, the release said.
Officials also emphasised that the government remains sensitive to public sentiment and is committed to an
inclusive development
process, it added.

Priests conducting tarpana puja in S'patna to get ID cards
Mandya: The priests at the four ghats in Srirangapatna town, which are renowned for immersing the ashes of deceased persons and conducting post-funeral rituals, will soon be issued ID cards. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A rate chart will be prepared to protect the interests of the devotees. Meanwhile, the Srirangapatna Town Municipal Council earned Rs 95 lakh from auctioning the cleanliness works on these ghats. The four ghats of Srirangapatna, i.e., Paschima Vahini, Dodda Gosai Ghat, Sangama, and Srirangaswamy Temple, have been identified for the rituals where Rs 100 will be collected as cleanliness charges. Thousands of devotees from across South India visit these ghats to immerse the ashes of deceased persons and perform various rituals. "This amount is not new. Earlier, too, we were collecting (money). But we incurred around Rs 7 lakh loss as the collection amount was less than the expenses. Now, in the auction, we got a good response," explained municipal council in-charge president L Dinesh to TOI. Meanwhile, the council decided to issue ID cards for the priests to perform the rituals, besides publishing a rate chart. "The priests who perform the rituals are directed to enrol with the council, and ID cards will be issued to them. This will help the devotees," said municipal council in-charge chief officer Rajanna M. According to authorities, based on the directions of the Karnataka high court following the filing of Public Interest Litigation, the district administration and the council have taken up initiatives to save the Cauvery River water from pollution in these four ghats, which are known for ash immersion and post-death rituals. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Two companies came forward to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) on proposals to keep the River Cauvery clean in these ghats," explained officials. Meanwhile, the priests welcomed the council's decision. Priest Bhanu Prakash Sharma said the council's decision to issue ID cards for the priests will protect the devotees from all kinds of cheating. "Many times, I receive complaints that in the name of rituals, devotees are cheated. If the ID cards are made mandatory, it is possible to streamline the entire system," he said. He also welcomed the rate chart, saying many times devotees are asked to pay Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 for the rituals, which can be performed for just Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000. Chennai airport conducts full scale emergency mock drill to assess crash preparedness
Chennai: An aircraft engulfed in flames, fire and crash extinguishers rushing to put out the fire, NDRF personnel rescuing victims, medical teams attending to passengers with burn injuries, ambulances zipping through the traffic — it all seemed realistic. The full-scale emergency mock drill at the OTA premises on GST Road brought together various stakeholders of Chennai airport to assess their preparedness and readiness in case of a flight crash near the airport. Initially, onlookers and passersby panicked as they heard about the 'mayday call', saw medical teams triaging patients based on injuries, watched CISF personnel cordoning off the area and the bomb squad checking the luggage for suspected ammunition. The drill caused a traffic snarl on the GST road for about an hour as vehicle movement was restricted to make way for ambulances. It took a while for people to understand that it was an exercise being carried out by several govt agencies as a practice to manage future emergencies. The mock drill, conducted on Saturday, was almost a simulation of Ahmedabad crash, but the fictional aircraft was assumed to be carrying 50 passengers and five crew members. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! The entire exercise was monitored and evaluated by DGCA representatives, air traffic controllers, and district administration to identify performance metrics that need improvement. However, this time authorities planned it outside the airport. DGCA instructed all the airports to carry out a full-scale emergency exercise at the earliest after the Ahmedabad incident, which occurred outside the airport. Though the exercise was originally scheduled for December, it was advanced as per DGCA instructions.

Chariots of sibling deities reach Gundicha Temple
1 2 3 Puri: The sibling deities — Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra — arrived at their birthplace in Gundicha Temple here on their chariots by 1.10pm on Saturday, after they had stopped at various points along the 3-km Grand Road on Friday due to reported crowd control difficulties. The deities, who granted darshan to devotees atop the chariots near Saradha Bali throughout Saturday, will be taken into the Gundicha Temple's sanctum sanctorum on Sunday evening in the traditional Pahandi procession. On Friday evening, thousands of devotees gathered near Lord Jagannath's Nandighosh chariot, raising stampede concerns. Police spent about two hours trying to clear the path, leading the devotees to move Lord Jagannath's chariot nominally at 7.45 pm before the ceremony was postponed to Saturday. Both opposition parties and devotees criticised the crowd management arrangements. Law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said Rath Yatra and the chariot pulling were "peaceful and incident-free". "I extend my appreciation to servitors, district and police administration for conducting Rath Yatra in an incident-free and disciplined manner. Lakhs of people participated on the festival's second day and pulled the chariots," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Odisha police said they achieved their 'zero casualty' goal during the festival. "Under the guidance of the chief minister, we successfully facilitated the arrival of the three chariots at Saradha Bali (in front of Gundicha Temple). Hard work, crowd management, traffic control and provision of emergency services by our personnel ensured peace and order during Rath Yatra," Odisha police wrote on X. The sibling deities will remain at Gundicha Temple for six days before beginning their return journey, known as Bahuda Yatra (return car festival) on July 5. Gundicha Temple underwent beautification work before welcoming the deities. The enhancements include stone-cladding of the outer boundary wall, landscaping and illumination arrangements, enhancing the shrine's visual appeal for devotees. Gundicha Temple, known as the garden residence of the deities due to its numerous trees, remains unoccupied except during Rath Yatra when they stay for around a week. Throughout the Rath Yatra festival, Gundicha Temple operates as Jagannath Temple, conducting about 25 daily rituals.
