Wexford basketball club court great success
The team's success didn't stop at their league win as the Sparks went on to conquer the Top Four Tournament in Kilkenny on April 5, beating a very strong Portlaoise squad 49-42 in the finals.
'The team combines talented players from New Ross with dedicated players travelling up from Wexford Town. Their success this season is all the more impressive, given the journey this team has taken,' explained one of the team's coaches, Darren Arkins.
"Just last season, they suffered several defeats that could have crushed their confidence. Instead, the players with the help of their coaching team regrouped and transformed themselves into a formidable force for the 2024/2025 season,' he added.
Both coaches, Mr Arkins and Jack Thiel, praised the players' commitment throughout the season, with Mr Thiel commenting that the team has 'worked hard on and off the court, and the results speak for themselves'.
"The pride they've brought to the club, to their families, and to the town is something truly special,' Mr Thiel said.
Both coaches thanked the parents, who have supported the boys every step of the way. The club also thanked sponsors such as South East Vegetables and Cairn Construction.

Kerry aim to end Ulster opposition inferiority complex, Cork look for underage crumbs of encouragement
Two very different agendas for Cork and Kerry at O'Moore Park this afternoon. Let's throw in with Kerry seeing as their All-Ireland MFC quarter-final is the first of the Portlaoise double-header. Kerry's opposition is Cavan. Kerry's opposition is Ulster and so the hour's fare provides the latest opportunity to see how an underage Kingdom crop fares against a leading northern outfit. Not to throw in with hyperbolic statements but Kerry minor and U20 teams of late have developed something of an inferiority complex when stood opposite northern opposition. The results and the evidence speaks for itself. In the 2023 and '24 campaigns, Kerry's minor interest ended at the hands of Ulster opposition - Derry and Monaghan - at the All-Ireland semi-final stage. The year previous, the then Kerry management were visibly ecstatic on the Portlaoise sideline at scoring a one-point All-Ireland quarter-final win over Tyrone. The same management, the summer before, had suffered defeat to Derry in the delayed 2020 decider. So that's Kerry coming off second best in three of their last four minor outings against an Ulster team. At U20, Tyrone bettered them this year and last. Mercy Mounthawk suffered the same fate in the All-Ireland post-primary semi-finals of this year and last. The approach minor manager Wayne Quillinan outlined midweek is one, as results attest to, that Kerry underage teams of all hues have floundered against in recent years. 'Cavan are going to be ultra defensive. In fairness, they're really, really well coached. They're really hard to break down. Obviously with the numbers back, they're looking for turnovers. They're looking to break at pace.' For Cork, the challenge is a little less nuanced and rather more straightforward; that is to successfully negotiate the All-Ireland minor quarter-final hurdle. Derry, Dublin, and Mayo, by very different margins, have shown Cork the exit door at this stage of the championship over the past three years. The most recent of those was last June's worrying 3-14 to 0-6 beating by Mayo. Arriving as it did off the back of a 15-point Munster final whacking, the conversation and concern surrounding the health of the county's underage set-up had its volume turned up. Lamentably, the results did not spark any meaningful introspection by those in power. Following 10 and nine-point defeats at the hands of Kerry in recent weeks, Cork football and the current minor students could badly do with a performance and scoreline that provides crumbs of encouragement going forward. Encouragement, on the whole, has been in short supply for Cork football this summer. Across minor, U20, and senior, there have been 11 championship outings. The four victories are split into two categories. Two comfortable wins over Clare and Limerick at U20 and senior. And two incredibly near escapes against Tipperary at minor and U20. In short, Cork have not bettered a county at or above their station. Does that change here? New Ross Swimming Club members make a big splash at gala in Bangor
Wexford People Today at 12:30 New Ross Swimming Club had a highly successful weekend at the Ian Wright Memorial Gala in Bangor, returning with a fantastic medal haul and a host of personal best performances. The two-day event featured top swimmers from across the country, and the New Ross team made their mark with both podium finishes and strong overall showings. Noah Cowman opened the club's medal account with a bronze in the 200m backstroke after a strong performance on day one. Lili Markey continued her excellent form with a silver in the 100m butterfly, followed by silver in the 200m freestyle and a stand-out gold in the 800m freestyle on day two. Luca Power was in top form throughout the gala, winning gold in the 200m, 100m and 400m freestyle events, along with a silver in the 50m skins and bronze in the 50m butterfly. Juliette Pac Kenny produced a great swim to earn bronze in the 400m individual medley. Emersyn Scully delivered a strong performance to secure silver in the 50m breaststroke. In addition to the medal winners, several other New Ross swimmers impressed with personal bests, consistent effort, and strong racing. Patrick Crouch showed excellent form across the weekend, achieving multiple personal bests and demonstrating great consistency. Loughlin Daniels, Eva Mullins and Katie Ryan also delivered solid performances, gaining valuable race experience and showing great promise for future meets. As the swimmers look ahead to the upcoming Summer Nationals competitions, this gala served as a valuable benchmark and a celebration of the athletes' hard work. Congratulations to all swimmers, coaches, and families – your dedication and team spirit continue to make the club and community proud.

Three late goals see Kilkenny retain Leinster minor hurling title
Leinster MHC final: Kilkenny 4-11 Galway 1-8 Kilkenny are Leinster minor hurling champions once again after claiming a 12-point victory over Galway in Portlaoise. Three goals inside the final 10 minutes from Cian Byrne, Ollie O'Donovan and Diarmuid Behan eventually put an end to the Galway resistance after a tough battle throughout. Galway had started brightly with a Cian Hannon goal helping them to a 1-2 to 0-3 lead nearing the end of the opening period. An opportunistic Jake Mullen goal settled the Cats and further scores from O'Donovan and Kevin Buggy ensured Niall Bergin's side led by three points at the change of ends. READ MORE Galway then had the aid of a strong breeze in the second half but struggled to make an impact as the Noresiders outscored them 0-5 to 0-1 before the end of the third quarter. Galway relied on the free-taking exploits of Cillian Roche and Jack Shaughnessy for all but one of their scores in the final 30 minutes, in contrast to the attacking display at the other end. The dam broke loose in the final few minutes with O'Donovan, Behan and Byrne combining for three quick-fire goals which sealed the result in their favour as they brought home a 61st provincial minor crown and now go directly into the All-Ireland semi-finals.
