Ronaldo makes shock injury revelation after Portugal win Nations League

Metroa day ago

Cristiano Ronaldo says he came into the Nations League final with an injury, but battled through the pain to score as Portugal went on to beat Spain on penalties.
The 40-year-old started the match at the Allianz Arena and scored Portugal's second equaliser on 61 minutes after Spain had twice taken the lead.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United superstar did not quite make it to 90 minutes, going down injured just before the end of normal time, replaced by Goncalo Ramos.
He could only watch on during a goalless extra-time before his country won thanks to scoring five penalties in the shootout, while Alvaro Morata missed his spot-kick for Spain.
It was not clear exactly what the injury was that Ronaldo was struggling with, but he revealed that he did not suffer it late in the game, but before kick-off.
'I had already felt it during the warm-up, I had been feeling it for some time,' Ronaldo said, via Record. 'But for the national team, if I had to break a leg, I would.
'It's a title, I had to play and I gave my all, I went as far as I could. I helped with a goal.'
He added of his second Nations League win with Portugal: 'I'm so happy. Winning for Portugal is very special. I have many titles, but nothing is better than winning for Portugal.
'The tears and the sense of duty fulfilled. It's beautiful. It's our nation. We are a small people, but with great ambition.
'I've lived in many countries, I've played for many clubs, but when they talk about Portugal it's a special feeling. Being the captain of this generation, it's a source of pride.
'Winning a title is always the highlight of a national team. The future is about thinking in the short term. I had an injury and that was too much, too much… I pushed, because for the national team you have to push.'
The entertaining contest at the Allianz Arena saw three goals before the half-time break.
Martin Zubimendi put Spain ahead on 21 minutes before Nuno Mendes quickly equalised just five minutes later.
Mikel Oyarzabal put the Spaniards back ahead just before the interval as he expertly completed a lovely move, but the lead again did not last long as Ronaldo prodded home just after the hour-mark.
Portugal looked the more likely side to grab a winner later on and during extra-time, but could not find one before the final whistle.
The match went to a penalty shootout where there was a string of brilliantly taken spot-kicks until Alvaro Morata saw his tame effort saved by Diogo Costa.
Ruben Neves made no such mistake and found the back of the net to see Portugal claim victory 5-3 on penalties. More Trending
It is the second time Portugal have won the Nations League in only the fourth edition of the event.
Ronaldo started the 1-0 win over Netherlands as his country won the tournament in 2019 and has got his hands on the trophy again six years later.
Spain have reached the final for the third straight edition of the Nations League, losing to France in 2021, beating Croatia in '23 and narrowly losing out this time round.

Tuesday's football predictions and 13/1 acca tips: Netherlands & Republic of Ireland to win

Tuesday football tips The final matches of the summer international break take place early this week as nations face World Cup qualifiers and friendlies before the end of the season. The Club World Cup is around the corner for some, but for most these matches will spell the end of 2024/25, though many countries are already preparing for the 2026 World Cup. That is especially true for teams like the Netherlands, who face another World Cup qualifier this week alongside sides such as Italy, Wales and the South American nations. And other nations are simply contesting friendlies as they look to test themselves against varied opposition, with the Republic of Ireland taking on Luxembourg and Northern Ireland play Iceland. Ahead of these matches, we've put together a small accumulator for three of the Tuesday fixtures featuring Northern Ireland, Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland, with odds of 13/1 at Bet365 for any interested punters. Luxembourg vs Republic of Ireland prediction The Republic of Ireland are yet to kick off their World Cup qualifying campaign in a difficult group containing Portugal and Hungary, though a 4-2 aggregate win in the Nations League play-off with Bulgaria has shown that they are more than capable of competing with those nations outside of the top tier. Heimir Hallgrimsson's side drew 1-1 with Senegal last week in their first friendly of the summer international break, and this match should provide a far easier opponent after a respectable result at the Aviva Stadium. Luxembourg have lost six of their last 10, though they drew with Bulgaria, Belarus and Northern Ireland while also beating Sweden in a surprise result. However, the minnows have conceded 12 goals in their last 10 matches and often against inferior sides to Ireland, so the hosts remain the clear favourites. While Ireland have lost five of their last 10, those results came against Portugal, England and Greece, and they have beaten Finland and Bulgaria twice each in that time, scoring seven goals in the process. Due to the obvious gap in quality there is little value in several of the main markets on football betting sites, so we think a wager on the Republic of Ireland to win to nil provides the best value at 2/1 with William Hill. Tuesday football prediction 1: Republic of Ireland to win to nil - 2/1 William Hill Northern Ireland vs Iceland prediction This match throws together two sides ranked 71st and 74th in the world respectively, as Iceland travel to face Northern Ireland in Belfast. Michael O'Neill's side are yet to begin their World Cup qualifying campaign, though they lost 2-1 to Denmark last week in another friendly. But as they gear up to face Iceland, Northern Ireland have lost just three of their last 10 matches, two of which were to Sweden and Denmark – teams ranked within the top 30 in the world. Interestingly, each of these losses was in an away game, with the difference between playing home and away illustrated by following a 1-0 loss away in Bulgaria with a 5-0 home win. Iceland beat a poor Scotland team 3-1 last week but that is just their third win in 10 games, having lost to Turkey and Wales alongside a disappointing 5-2 aggregate defeat to Kosovo in the Nations League relegation play-offs. And it's Northern Ireland who are the slight favourites in this one, so we've gone with a simple wager here, with the host priced at 11/10 to win with various betting sites including Ladbrokes. Tuesday football prediction 2: Northern Ireland to beat Iceland - 11/10 Ladbrokes Netherlands vs Malta prediction The Netherlands' loss on penalties to Spain in the Nations League quarter-finals showed that the Dutch are certainly back among Europe's elite after a good showing at Euro 2024, and they head into their second World Cup qualifier having won their opener against Finland 2-0 away from home. The Dutch will be expected to win Group G, and their second test comes against a Malta side ranked 169th in the world. Malta have lost five of their last 10 matches, with two draws coming against Andorra and Lithuania and the wins against Moldova, Andorra and Liechtenstein. Within those matches, they lost 7-1 to Czechia and 2-0 to both Poland and Greece, illustrating the fact that they can concede quite a few goals when up against top-tier opposition. And the match against the Dutch will be a far tougher task than any of their last games, with Ronald Koeman's side having lost just two of their last 10. The Netherlands have played England, Spain and Germany in that time and have scored 19 goals, including three against Spain and four against Hungary. And there's real potential for goals against a lowly Malta side who tend to concede against the top teams, so we think a wager on over 4.5 goals could provide value at 6/5. Viktor Gyokeres sends message to Sporting after Man Utd handed new asking price

Viktor Gyokeres is 'furious' with Sporting CP after the Portuguese giants made the decision not to sell him for a reduced fee this summer. Gyokeres, 26, emerged as one of Europe' most prolific centre forwards last season, finishing the campaign with 52 goals in 54 appearances. It followed a thrilling first campaign in Portugal where he netted 43 in 50 appearances under current Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim. The Sweden international fired Sporting to a league and cup double in May and has remained coy on his future, even failing to rule out the possibility of another season at Lisbon. But privately, Gyokeres has fully expected to be sold by the club this summer. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. But last year, in return for him staying on for another season, Sporting agreed to sell him this summer for a fee below that clause. It was agreed if Sporting received an offer of at least €60m with a further €10m in add-ons, they would not stand in his way. Record report however Sporting president Frederico Varandas has decided not to honour that agreement. While the Portuguese champions are still waiting for official bids, clubs who have made enquiries have been told it will cost at least €80m to do business. Arsenal and Chelsea are among the clubs interested in signing Gyokeres having seemingly turned their attention elsewhere in recent weeks. Manchester United are also interested in signing him this summer but would likely need to raise further cash this summer to move forward with a bid with O Jogo reporting there still have been no official approach from Amorim's side. The situation has left Gyokeres 'furious', feeling the club have gone back on their word and abandoned promises made to him last summer. More Trending The striker has also removed references to Sporting from his Instagram account – although he also appears to have removed mentions of sponsor Nike and the Sweden national team. Gyokeres is a bunch of different strikers blended into one. He's a bulldozer, but he's also got that turn of pace and knack of finding himself in shooting areas. Some strikers, you can see they overthink things, but he'll shoot first and ask questions later. At 6ft 2in, he could definitely add an aerial presence to his game to take himself to the next level, but he's very good at using his chest as a magnet to win these aerial duels. He may not be as fearless as others when it comes to aerial duels, but he knows how to use his strengths to his advantage to hold up the ball and bring others into play. He's not someone like Roberto Firmino who is going to be dropping deep, so if Arsenal need to change certain things to get the best out of Gyokeres then they should. Zach Lowy, European football expert With Chelsea signing Liam Delap and Arsenal focusing on Benjamin Sesko, Gyokeres' options in the Premier League may have narrowed to United. The player has also turned down what would be a hugely lucrative move to Saudi Arabia. United have no European football on offer this season but that did not prevent them from signing Matheus Cunha from Wolved. Bryan Mbeumo has also favoured a move to Old Trafford ahead of Arsenal and Newcastle with United expected to make a second bid for the Brentford star soon. Revealed: What's really going on with Real Madrid and Martin Zubimendi after Arsenal thought they had sealed the deal for Spanish midfielder

Real Madrid have reportedly sought to play down suggestions they have attempted to hijack Arsenal 's deal to sign Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi this summer. Arsenal have long been viewed as the clear frontrunners for the Spanish international midfielder. Mail Sport reported back in January that Arsenal had virtually agreed a £51million deal for Zubimendi, but Real Sociedad wanted him to remain at the club until the end of the season. Reports from Spain on Monday claimed Real Madrid were set to make a move to convince Zubimendi to join them over the Gunners. Marca's report claimed Real Madrid had contacted Zubimendi's entourage to determine whether he had finalised a deal with Arsenal, which his camp were claimed to have denied. The report claimed Real Madrid's call has 'changed everything' with Zubimendi becoming aware of the possibility of joining the club. Arsenal are reported to view their deal for the Spain international to have been completed Football's most original new podcast: Whistleblowers Hosted by Gordon Smart, with ex-elite referee Mark Clattenburg and veteran journalist Ian Ladyman, this isn't another safe roundtable of punditry. However, according to the Athletic, Real Madrid officials have expressed their admiration for the midfielder but have denied that the Spanish giants had made an effort to sign him. Arsenal are said to regard their deal with Zubimendi to have been signed, with the midfielder expected to link up with Mikel Arteta's side for pre-season training. The wait for official confirmation of Zubimendi's transfer, with other deals having been announced in the first summer window, is reportedly due to Real Sociedad wanting to ratify the deal in July for accounting purposes. Zubimendi had spoken out about his future last week, ahead of Spain's Nations League matches. The 26-year-old midfielder admitted he faces a 'long summer' amid speculation over his next club. Zubimendi also labelled Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso as his 'idol', even before working with the former midfielder when he coached Real Sociedad's B-team. 'Of course there are options, but it's true that it looks like it's going to be a different, long summer, and I don't know how it's going to end. 'I don't think thinking about that right now is my priority. I'm here with the national team, which I think is already quite demanding, and if I have to say something, I'll do it. 'I've always said he was my idol and that it was a stroke of luck for me that he was able to coach me in the reserve team during a very important year. The Gunners expect Zubimendi to join up with Mikel Arteta's squad for pre-season training 'The following season, I made it into the first team, and, well, I don't like to talk about those hypotheticals, I prefer to talk about the present.' A product of Sociedad's youth system, Zubimendi has gone on to play 236 times for the club, while he has represented Spain on 17 occasions. He has long been regarded as one of the best midfielders in LaLiga and last summer was close to joining Liverpool, who came in for him after he helped Spain to win Euro 2024. However, Zubimendi ultimately decided to stay at Sociedad after his boyhood club attempted to change his mind. Zubimendi scored in the Nations League final on Sunday as Spain drew 2-2 with Portugal, but suffered defeat in a penalty shoot-out.
