Reggae star, Cocoa Tea, dies aged 65
Jamaican singer-songwriter Colvin Scott, better known by his stage name Cocoa Tea, has died at the age of 65.
The reggae singer died Tuesday morning at a Florida hospital following a cardiac arrest, his wife, Malvia Scott, told the Jamaica Gleaner.
'I got a call early this morning to say that he had been transferred from the facility to the hospital...which is like five minutes away...because he was vomiting,' Malvia said. 'He was initially diagnosed with lymphoma in 2019, but for the last six months he was also struggling with pneumonia.'
'He was definitely very brave,' she added. 'He was positive throughout it all. About three weeks ago when he was admitted in the hospital he asked if I was worried and I said, 'I am always worried.' He told me not to worry because everything was going to be all right. He was always very hopeful.'
Born on September 3, 1959, in Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, Scott broke out into the country's reggae scene in 1985 before becoming successful worldwide in the Nineties.
Some of his top hits include 'I Lost My Sonia,' 'Sweet Sweet Cocoa Tea,' 'Israel's King,' 'Young Lover,' and 'Rikers Island.' The latter went on to become his most popular song. He later turned it into a dancehall version with fellow reggae artist Nardo Ranks, titled 'Me No Like Rikers Island.' It was released on Columbia/SME Records' 1991 dance compilation album, Dancehall Reggaespañol.
He gained further notoriety in 2008 with the release of his song 'Barack Obama,' which he wrote in support of the former president.
Jamaica's Prime Minister Andrew Holness has paid tribute to Scott, writing on X: 'I extend condolences to the family, friends, and supporters of Calvin George Scott, affectionately known as Cocoa Tea. His smooth vocals and compelling lyrics gave us timeless classics like 'Rocking Dolly' and 'I Lost My Sonia,' songs that have become anthems in our cultural landscape.
'Beyond his musical genius, Cocoa Tea was a beacon of kindness and generosity, consistently uplifting the less fortunate and embodying the warmth of our nation,' he added.
Scott is survived by his wife, Malvia, and eight children.

Vernon Kay urges BBC colleagues not to call HR after cheeky remark leaves them stunned
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Vernon Kay has pleaded with his BBC Radio 2 colleagues not to contact HR after making an "awkward" comment about the weather. The UK was basking in glorious sunshine last month, with the the Environment Agency even declaring drought status for the north-west of England following the driest start to spring in 69 years. However, the weather has turned for most of the country since the beginning of June, with the Met Office warning that a large area of the UK is set to be struck by fierce thunderstorms on Saturday, according to the Mirror. The recent wet weather has not gone unnoticed by Radio 2 host Vernon, who told his BBC colleague Scott Mills that he had an unfortunate moment while discussing the rain with the production team. (Image: Instagram) He said: "We were talking about the age gap between us on-air and the production team. Had a bit of an awkward moment this morning. You know the weather's turned, it's raining outside. I said to the Radio 2 team, a lot of desks on your left hand side, 'Hi team, morning news team, ooo the weather's changed. "And someone said 'Yeah it's horrible'. So I said 'Outside it's raining but inside it's wet', East 17. Didn't go down very well. I'm like 'Before you get onto HR, it's East 17." The lyrics in question come from the title song of East 17's second studio album 'Steam', which was released in the UK on October 17, 1994 by London Records. The album was certified 2× Platinum in the UK. However, with the song being released over 30 years ago, it seems that many of the BBC's production staff were unaware of the lyrics, before Scott came up with an idea. (Image: Getty Images for Great British Racing) Scott said: "Well, you should have checked it by me first and then gone to the office, do it the other way round next time. Come and check with me the phrase before you say it to the whole office." Last week, Vernon admitted to listeners that he was feeling a 'bit ropey' after enjoying BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend. During the show, the 51-year-old confessed that he suffers from a seafood allergy. It means Vernon is unable to eat prawns or cockles - a type of small edible shellfish. He says he discovered the allergy after undergoing a test. Vernon said: 'Radio 1, how are you feeling? A bit ropey, no, honestly, terrible, I'm sure I've eaten a prawn or a cockle. I'm allergic to cockles."

Helen Flanagan shares scary health condition as lips turn numb and swollen
Former Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan has revealed the her recent health scare as she revealed she has discovered an allergy to cherries, which left her throat itchy and lips numb Former soap actress Helen Flanagan has shared her recent health scare, after discovering she is allergic to something she 'never knew' about – until now. The former Coronation Street star, who is best known for her role as Rosie Webster on the soap, shared her surprise with fans in a candid video on her Instagram story – as she was confronted with strange symptoms after going about her daily business. Wearing a blue jumper and minimal makeup in the video, the mum-of-three, 34, tells her fans: "So I've literally just picked up the kids from school, did the food shop today and Delilah was like, 'Oh Mummy I want some cherries'. So..." Helen, who recently wowed in risqué lingerie snaps, is then interrupted by one of her three little ones as she turns and tells them: "Hang on a second, baby" before the tot can be heard in the background saying: "Mama!" "So I erm..." she then cuts the camera and restarts the video, explaining to fans: "So yeah Delilah did the food shop and she was like, 'Oh Mummy I want some cherries'. "They were just playing in the garden so I just cut some up and I thought, 'Oh these cherries look nice' so I just had one and, honestly, straight away I was like..." she then coughs before she says while rubbing her throat: "This is really itchy here, my throat started itching and, like, my lips have literally, like they fill like numb and really, really swollen. "But I never knew that I was allergic to cherries," she says with a cough before the camera then cuts out. According to the NHS, symptoms of an allergic reaction can include swollen eyes, lips, mouth or throat amongst a string of other symptoms. The website also advises to dial 999 if "your lips, mouth, throat or tongue suddenly become swollen". The star's health scare comes after her recent split from her boyfriend Robbie Talbot after a year of dating. The mum-of-three had hinted at wanting a child with the former footballer, but has since had a "change of heart," according to friends. The pair were living together at Helen's stunning Bolton mansion but, Helen later revealed Robbie had moved out as she felt it was the best move for her three children, who 'missed' their dad Scott Sinclair. Helen and Scott split in 2022 after 13 years together. However, it was later reported Helen and Robbie "wanted different things in life". Meanwhile, the star also recently opened up on her split from her long-term partner Scott, with whom she shares her three children with. Helen said last year on Charlotte Dawson's Naughty Corner podcast: "We don't like each other." She added: "I still love him very much, I care about him deeply, but we don't like each other. We don't like each other at all, we don't get on. I do know that Scott—he'd never admit it—cares about me too, and he does love me."

Sir Ridley Scott says 'I think I've done enough' and is finished with Alien
Sir Ridley Scott says 'I think I've done enough' and is finished with Alien After directing the eponymous 1979 sci-fi/horror flick, the 87-year-old filmmaker walked away from the 'Alien' series until returning for the 2012 prequel 'Prometheus' and its follow-up Director and Producer Sir Ridley Scott (Image: Andrew Matthews - Pool/Getty Images ) Sir Ridley Scott is finished with the 'Alien' franchise. After directing the eponymous 1979 sci-fi/horror flick, the 87-year-old filmmaker walked away from the 'Alien' series until returning for the 2012 prequel 'Prometheus' and its follow-up 'Alien: Covenant' in 2017, though Scott now thinks he's "done enough" with the 'Alien' franchise. Speaking with Screen Rant, he said: " A number of years after ['Alien'], I said, 'I'm going to resurrect this',[and wrote] 'Prometheus' from scratch–a blank sheet of paper. Damon Lindelof and I sat then hammered out 'Prometheus'. "It was very present and very welcome. The audience really wanted more. I said, 'It needs to fly.' No one was coming for it, [and] I went once again [and made] 'Alien Covenant', and it worked too. "Where it's going now, I think I've done enough, and I just hope it goes further." After Scott's exit from the 'Alien' franchise following the original movie, the series was passed to a handful of different directors, with James Cameron helming the 1986 sequel 'Aliens', David Fincher working on 'Alien 3' in 1992, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet directing 'Alien: Resurrection' in 1997. Article continues below Following 'Alien: Resurrection', the series crossed over with the 'Predator' franchise for the flicks 'Alien vs Predator' in 2004, and 'AVPR: Aliens vs Predator – Requiem' in 2007. However, Scott admitted he wasn't a fan of what came after Cameron's 'Aliens'. He explained: "It is spreading like wildfire, and not really. I think I felt it was deadened after 4. I think mine was pretty damn good, and I think Jim's was good, and I have to say the rest were not very good. "And I thought, 'F***, that's the end of a franchise which should be as important as bloody 'Star Trek' or 'Star Wars', which I think is phenomenal. "At least, I think the first one by George [Lucas] is seminal – it was as seminal as '2001' ['A Space Odyssey']. To me, it was that important in terms of film language and where you go next." Reflecting on 'Alien', Scott revealed he was the fifth director who was asked to helm the movie, with the studio first offering the job to 'M*A*S*H's Robert Altman. Article continues below He said: "I'm fascinated [by] very good comics and the best in the world was probably Jean Giraud Moebius. Moebius was a French comics man who was just genius. "I was staring at these, and suddenly I was offered 'Alien' out of the blue. And because designer is in my blood and DNA, I just knew what to do with it. "And I was the fifth f****** choice. Why you offered Robert Altman 'Alien', God only knows. Altman said, 'Are you kidding? I'm not going to do this', and I went, 'Are you kidding? I have to do this', because it borders and verges on heavy metal."
