Ukraine invited to Hague NATO summit, Zelensky attendance unclear
Ukraine has been invited to a NATO summit in The Hague this month, Mark Rutte, the military bloc's chief, said on Wednesday, without specifying whether this meant Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky would attend.
"I invited Ukraine to the summit. We will, as soon as possible, bring out the program with more details," Rutte told reporters before a meeting with defense ministers in Brussels.
Asked whether Zelensky personally had been invited, Rutte only said the program would be published in due course.

Pentagon chief says NATO allies cannot have 'reliance' on US
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Thursday told NATO allies they could not depend solely on Washington for defense, as he urged them to agree a spending deal of five percent of GDP. "Our message is going to continue to be clear. It's deterrence and peace through strength, but it can't be reliance. It cannot and will not be reliance on America in a world of a lot of threats," Hegseth said at a meeting with NATO counterparts in Brussels. AFP

NATO 'very close' to consensus on 5% spending target: US defense chief
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said on Thursday that NATO allies were close to agreeing on a deal regarding defense spending to meet President Donald Trump's demand for five percent of GDP. "Countries in there are well exceeding two percent, and we think very close, almost near consensus, on a five percent commitment for NATO in The Hague later this month," Hegseth said after meeting NATO counterparts in Brussels. "There are a few countries that are not quite there yet. I won't name any names. We don't -- it's amongst friends in that room. We'll get them there," he said. AFP
