New Samarahan Boulevard can become alternate venue for big events

KOTA SAMARAHAN (April 23): The upcoming Samarahan Boulevard could become an alternate venue to host major events, and relieve the congestion at Padang Merdeka in Kuching, said Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
In stating this, the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak revealed that Phase 1 of the project had already been awarded out to a contractor, signalling that construction would commence soon.
'Major events are often held at the Padang Central Kuching (now Padang Merdeka) since the 1960s. However, Kuching has traffic jams whenever such events take place there.
'Since Samarahan is already seen as the 'Greater Kuching', we have planned to build this boulevard on the big land that is available.
'This boulevard would be the largest in Sarawak, and possibly the largest in Borneo or Malaysia. It is about 2km and over 20m wide, and would have all the facilities to hold an assembly just like in the Putrajaya Boulevard,' he said at the pre-launch of the Taman Tasik Desa Ilmu project yesterday.
On the Taman Tasik Desa Ilmu project, Abdul Karim said the RM6.8 million development would be implemented under Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA).
He stated that with more people purchasing houses in Samarahan and the growing higher learning institution student population, Taman Tasik Desa Ilmu would attract many people to exercise and hold recreational activities.
'We are aware that this area is a place for residents in Desa Ilmu to jog and have fun activities.
'Hence, it would be a good move to elevate this place so that there is a parking lot, a toilet, a place for reflexology and more — a little bit of everything would elevate the way of life, the residents' well-being, and strengthen family bonding,' added Abdul Karim.
Also present yesterday were Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development and Kota Samarahan MP Datuk Rubiah Wang; Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Sarawak Datuk Rahman Lariwoo; and Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Shapiee. Over 800 foreign nationals approved under Sarawak MM2H since last year
Sarawak's tourism, creative industry and performing arts minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the education sector attracts foreigners to join the SMM2H programme, as their children can study at several international schools in the state. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Sarawak government has approved over 800 applications for the Sarawak Malaysia My Second Home (SMM2H) programme over the past 17 months. Sarawak's tourism, creative industry and performing arts minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah revealed this in the state legislative assembly recently. He said 560 applications were approved last year and another 265 as of mid-May this year, Bernama reported. According to Karim, the economic benefit from these applicants saw funds amounting to RM176.9 million entering the state, in terms of fixed deposits. After having captured the interest of Chinese nationals and Europeans over the period, Karim said the state is now keen on targeting applicants from Japan. He said this was because there has been an increase in the number of tourists coming to Sarawak from Japan. 'It's up to them (the Japanese) to see what Sarawak has to offer, but from what I can observe, especially from applicants from Europe or China, they see Sarawak as a safe place with good medical facilities,' he was quoted as saying at an event in Kuching today. He also cited the education sector as a factor that attracts foreigners to join the SMM2H programme, as their children can study at several international schools in Sarawak.

New tourism projects to ease Semporna congestion
Christina receives a memento from Zhao Jun (third from left). KOTA KINABALU (June 6): The Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry has proposed two major projects aimed at retaining tourists in Tawau. Its minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Christina Liew, said one of the projects is the Tawau Tourism Jetty which will allow ferries to transport tourists between Tawau and Semporna on a fixed schedule. This initiative aims to encourage tourists to stay overnight in Tawau while easing congestion in Semporna. Christina noted that Semporna, a favorite destination among Chinese tourists, is facing congestion due to its popularity for diving. The long travel distance from Tawau Airport to Semporna has also led to traffic accidents. The other project is the development of Tawau Hill Park which will see the construction of chalets, guided tours and a Pangolin Research Centre to attract eco-tourists and provide overnight options in Tawau. The project is expected to begin by year-end. The Floating Club House at Gaya Island. In addition, Christina said Sandakan will also be promoted, with funding allocated for wildlife sanctuaries such as the elephant sanctuary to ensure balanced tourism development. 'Sandakan's wildlife attractions cater to a different segment of tourists, so facility upgrades are necessary,' she said at the launch of the Floating Club House at Gaya Island today. Christina disclosed that Sabah has recorded 1.18 million visitor arrivals from January to April this year, marking a 17.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024. 'We are optimistic that tourist arrivals will continue to grow in the coming quarters, especially with improvements in transportation, logistics, food and entertainment,' she said. Christina expressed confidence that the Sabah Tourism Board's 2025 target of 3.5 million tourist arrivals is achievable. She highlighted that tourists from China, South Korea, and even France are among those contributing to the growth, with tourism operators investing heavily in new facilities to accommodate the expected increase — particularly from China. Earlier in her speech, Christina described the launch of the Floating Club House at Gaya Island as a milestone in Sabah's tourism evolution. 'This represents strategic collaboration between the public and private sectors, aiming to elevate high-value tourism in Sabah,' she said. She praised Lazy Cat International Travel Service Co. Ltd. for their substantial investment in Sabah's tourism sector, including luxury yacht services, cultural tourism ventures, and marine transportation enhancements via their local subsidiary, Cheetah Transportation Sdn Bhd. The Floating Club House, uniquely constructed atop the sea, offers sustainable luxury with facilities for dining, leisure, and scenic appreciation — setting a new benchmark for marine-based tourism experiences in the state. Also present at the launch were Malaysian Tourism Federation President Datuk Tan Kok Liang, Sri Pelancongan Sabah Sdn Bhd Chairman Ken Pan Ying On, CEO Thonny Chee, Cheetah Transportation Sdn Bhd Director Eric Yong, and Lazy Cat Chairman Zhao Jun.
