KDP leader slams Al-Sulaymaniyah protests as "politicized": Take your demands to Baghdad
Shafaq News / Hoshyar Zebari, a senior leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), criticized recent protests at one of Erbil's main entrances as "politicized." Speaking on X, Zebari remarked that the sit-in movement organized in Al-Sulaymaniyah is highly politicized, suggesting that demonstrators would be more effective if they relocated their protests to key public spaces in Baghdad—such as Tahrir Square or Imam Al-Qasim Street—in order to demand the timely payment of their financial entitlements. He also noted that the Regional Government has resolved the salary issue with Baghdad.
Meanwhile, dozens of individuals from Al-Sulaymaniyah gathered at the Dikala checkpoint between Erbil and Al-Sulaymaniyah, intending to enter Erbil to protest delayed salary payments. A hunger strike, now in its 13th day, along with other demonstrations in Al-Sulaymaniyah, has persisted amid ongoing delays in salary payments and rising living costs, intensifying calls for urgent government action from both the Iraqi and Kurdish authorities.
The protests occur amid a severe salary crisis in the Kurdistan Region, where unpaid public sector wages for December 2024 and January 2025 have sparked widespread unrest. The dispute stems from ongoing political tensions between the Regional Government in Erbil and the federal government in Baghdad, centering on disagreements over oil revenue sharing. While Baghdad insists that the KRG must transfer all oil production to the State Organization for Marketing of Oil (SOMO), funneling revenues into the national treasury to fund salaries and production costs, Erbil contends that it should deduct production costs before remitting the remaining funds.

Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity signed an agreement on Wednesday with the Turkish company Alifrin to raise the capacity of the electrical interconnection line between the two countries from 300 to 600 megawatts. Iraq's Electricity Ministry said in a statement that the Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, attended a ceremony held in Baghdad to sign an agreement with Alifrin to increase the capacity of the Iraqi-Turkish electricity interconnection line. The electrical interconnection line's capacity will be increased to 600 megawatts within less than one month, according to the statement. The step is part of the Ministry of Electricity's plan to diversify energy sources and expand opportunities for collaboration with neighboring countries and the European Union. In August 2024, Baghdad launched an electrical interconnection line between Iraq and Turkey to supply areas in northern Iraq with electrical energy. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) previously stated that the electricity imported through the new interconnection line, which spans 115 kilometers, will supply three regions in northern Iraq with electrical power. In early 2024, a 40-megawatt electrical interconnection line was established between Jordan and Iraq, enabling the provision of electrical power to western Iraq. In January 2025, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani confirmed that Iraq is achieving progress on its electricity interconnection projects with the Gulf States and Turkey. These initiatives aim to connect to the European Union electricity grid, facilitating integration within the energy sector. The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity revealed in late December that 90 percent of the electrical interconnection project between Iraq and the Gulf States has been completed. The spokesperson for the Electricity Ministry, Ahmed Musa, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that three companies are working on setting up the transmission line that connects the Al-Faw power station in southern Iraq to the Wafra power plant in Kuwait. According to Musa, the project's first phase, which will feed the southern Iraqi province of Basra, is anticipated to go into operation with a capacity of up to 500 megawatts.

Iraq to launch new strategy to eliminate poverty
Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Ministry of Planning revealed on Wednesday that it is working on a strategy to reduce poverty in the country. The spokesperson for the Iraqi Ministry of Planning, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, told Shafaq News that a five-year plan is being prepared to help the people in need and most vulnerable members of society through different approaches, including health, education, housing, services, income, and food security. The government's approach also involves mitigating the effects of climate change, including drought, desertification, and the waves of migration that accompany these phenomena, according to Al-Hindawi. The Iraqi official added that the government's new approach will involve the ministries of health, education, higher education, labor and social affairs, construction and housing, local governments, and the private sector. The Planning Ministry has finalized the final draft of the strategy, and a public statement will be made after the necessary administrative procedures are completed, according to Al-Hindawi. In February, the Iraqi Ministry of Planning revealed the results of a socioeconomic study of families in the country, performed in collaboration with the Kurdistan region of Iraq, which found that the poverty rate had dropped to 17.5 percent compared to 20.05 percent in 2018.

Iraq signs deal with Turkey's Alifrin to double electricity interconnection capacity
Baghdad ( – Iraq's Ministry of Electricity signed a contract on Wednesday (June 4, 2025) with Turkish company Alifrin to double the capacity of the Iraq-Turkey electricity interconnection line from 300 MW to 600 MW. The signing was overseen by Electricity Minister Ziad Ali Fadel. The new agreement will initially supply 300 MW to Iraq's national grid via the Jazira-Kesk 400 kV line in Nineveh governorate, with the capacity set to increase to the full 600 MW in less than a month. Iraqi ministry companies have reportedly completed all necessary technical preparations for this upgrade. This project is expected to directly improve electricity supply hours in northern Iraq and holds strategic importance by linking the Iraqi grid to the European energy network, where Turkey is a key member. The contract operates on a 'Take and Pay' basis, ensuring Iraq pays only for consumed electricity, offering economic flexibility.
