Clock ticking for PKR to fix reformist image, says analyst
PKR needs to push the government to fulfil its reform to win back the trust of its supporters, says analyst Syaza Shukri.
PETALING JAYA : With less than three years remaining on the unity government's term of office, the clock is ticking for PKR to reclaim its 'reformist' brand, says an analyst.
James Chin of the University of Tasmania said that while PKR may still consider itself a reformist party, public perception suggests otherwise.

He said the Anwar Ibrahim-led party has not been able to push through any real reforms, partly due to its alliance with Umno in the unity government.
Umno, a party not known for its support of reforms, has been dragging Pakatan Harapan down, said Chin. 'That's what's hurting PKR's image,' he told FMT.
Chin added that while PKR members still believe in its reformist identity, their role in government has been limited as most key decisions rested with Anwar and his Cabinet, not party members.
He cited the decision to extend Azam Baki's tenure as head of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission as one example—a decision that has not sat down well with some PKR members including Nurul Izzah Anwar, the prime minister's daughter and a party vice-president.
Chin, however, expects PKR supporters to remain loyal to the party, regardless of the excuses put forward by the leadership for failing to live up to promises made in the lead up to the 15th general election in 2022.
'The party will say it is just slow with reforms and they (the supporters) will just accept it,' he said, referring to remarks by another vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
Last week, Nik Nazmi said that although the unity government has not moved fast enough to implement reforms, PKR remains committed to its pledge of carrying out much needed institutional changes.
He said the unity government has made some progress in implementing the party's reform agenda, including pushing through a constitutional amendment granting citizenship to children born overseas to Malaysian mothers with foreign spouses.

Syaza Shukri of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) acknowledged that PKR's involvement in the unity government has affected its image but said the party still has time to reclaim the reformist mantle.
She suggested that Anwar target certain 'low hanging fruits', such as imposing a term limit for the prime minister—a policy he has previously endorsed.
'The party needs to push the government to fulfil its reform to win back the trust of its supporters.'
Syaza said the frustration among PKR supporters was apparent, especially the non-Malays who had backed the party on its promises of good governance and institutional change.
'PKR needs to go back to its roots,' she said, referring to the party's battle cry of reform.

LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd said the plaque originally functioned as a cover for the special chamber where the time capsule was located, but could no longer be securely closed after the capsule was opened on April 13. 'This posed a risk of injury to visitors passing by the area. Therefore, it was removed for safety reasons, in line with the management's priority to ensure the well-being of all visitors,' said the company's CEO Khairil Faizal Othman in a statement. Khairil added that there were no longer any historical elements or artifacts stored in the chamber after the time capsule was opened by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. He also said the plaque had not been discarded but has been 'properly stored' by the company, though he did not elaborate on its whereabouts. Khairil also denied that the company intended to erase or alter history by removing the plaque, in response to a claim by Bersatu MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan. He said: 'All actions taken were based on safety considerations, corporate compliance, and a commitment to preserving the legacy of KL Tower.' Khairil added that the plaque featured the tower's old corporate logo and that it cannot be used for official display in line with the skyscraper's rebranding. Earlier today, Wan Saiful reportedly urged communications minister Fahmi Fadzil to explain why the plaque had been removed, saying it should have stayed put since it was meant to commemorate the time capsule planted in 1996. The Tasek Gelugor MP questioned if the government was attempting to erase history, particularly Mahathir's role in planting the time capsule.

PETALING JAYA : The misuse of video outtakes on social media has become a growing concern recently, with netizens editing clips to malign public personalities, distort narratives and mislead audiences. With content zipping around social media almost instantaneously, an innocent moment can be turned into a controversy almost immediately. Unfortunately, FMT found itself a victim of this recently, with our popular Malay news presenter Nur Hailee Izzati unwittingly putting herself in the spotlight. Hailee had on May 30 posted a seemingly harmless outtake of herself laughing as she struggled to begin reading a news item that made mention of the prime minister. Unfortunately, the video clip was misused by a netizen who edited it to include a disparaging caricature of the prime minister, making it appear as though FMT and Hailee were mocking him. As a result, Hailee was forced to issue an apology, which she readily did. Misused video outtakes can cause grave reputational damage which may be hard to undo. The consequences can also be severe, with both FMT and Hailee receiving instant backlash from all corners, bringing harm to the brand and jeopardising careers. Ultimately, media outlets like FMT and journalists like Hailee must exercise care in what they do both in their professional and personal capacities. Meanwhile, netizens, many of whom are now themselves content creators, must do their part by consuming and using content ethically to maintain proper digital discourse. That is a tough ask, and can only be achieved if everyone plays their part. FMT and Hailee regret the manipulation of one of our unused video clips in a way that has brought ridicule to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Appeals court to hear Anwar's interim stay to suspend trial on Tuesday

(Bernama pic) PUTRAJAYA : The Court of Appeal will hear Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's application for an interim stay of the trial of a civil suit filed by a former research assistant on Tuesday, pending the outcome of an appeal. Lawyer K Rajasegaran, who appeared for Anwar, said the date was fixed following case management before a court deputy registrar this afternoon. Rajasegaran said the court also fixed July 21 to hear a permanent stay application of the trial until the outcome of Anwar's appeal to set aside the High Court's refusal to refer eight legal questions arising from the suit. Anwar had wanted the Federal Court to determine whether a sitting prime minister could be given protection from 'frivolous and politically motivated' suits while holding office. In the stay application filed yesterday by Messrs Zain Megat & Murad, the solicitors said there existed special circumstances to suspend the assault suit scheduled to begin in the High Court on June 16. They said the appeal to refer the legal questions to the Federal Court would be nugatory if the trial proceeded. 'The adjournment in the High Court is of utmost importance and is necessary to preserve the principles of justice, equality and constitutional integrity,' they said. They said the postponement would allow for complex and high-impact constitutional questions to be properly determined and interpreted. On Wednesday, Justice Roz Mawar Rozain dismissed Anwar's reference application, when it ruled that all eight questions posed failed to cross the threshold set out in Section 84 of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964. She said none of the articles cited in the Federal Constitution, as argued by Anwar's lawyers, gave rise to any real, substantial and justiciable questions of law that require a determination by the apex court. Roz Mawar had ordered for the trial of Yusoff Rawther's suit to begin at 9am on June 16 as scheduled. The prime minister wanted the apex court to rule whether Articles 5(1), 8(1), 39, 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution grant him qualified immunity from a suit filed by Yusoff four years ago. The suit relates to events which allegedly took place before Anwar took office on Nov 24, 2022. Yusoff, a grandson of the late Penang consumer advocate SM Mohamed Idris, claims he was assaulted at Anwar's home in Segambut in October 2018. He is seeking general, special, aggravated and exemplary damages, as well as interest, costs and other relief deemed fit by the court. Anwar denies the claim and has filed a countersuit.
