Southampton weigh €5m purchase of Köln striker Damion Downs
Florian Plettenberg reports that relegated Premier League club Southampton FC are interested in acquiring FC Köln striker Damion Downs. The newly-capped USMNT national netted 10 goals and contributed five assists for his promoted 2. Bundesliga outfit last season.
His current estimated market value stands at a career high €5m. This, per Plettenberg, is the price the Saints are willing to pay.

Downs carries some Bundesliga experience as well. The now 20-year-old made ten relief appearances for Köln in the top flight during the 2023/24 campaign. The German American twice scored crucial goals off the bench.
A dramatic late equalizer against Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday 25 helped die Geißböcke snatch a 3-3 draw off their fierce Rhein rivals. Downs also helped die Effzeh complete a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over relegation rivals Union Berlin with a late winner on matchday 33.
The points Downs directly helped his team gain ultimately couldn't help Köln avoid relegation, but the youngster quickly became a popular figure among both cathedral city side supporters and the German footballing public in general.
Köln will obviously not be extra keen to allow their leading goal-scorer from last season depart, even if they have secured some attacking additions ahead of the coming Bundesliga season.

The local Kölner Stadt Anzeiger recently reported that Köln tendered Downs a generous four-year contract-extension replete with a hefty pay raise. Köln have made renewing with both Downs and midfielder Eric Martel a top priority.
Downs – one of countless German footballers of partial U.S. military heritage – has his own tendencies. In the case of this particular footballer, a large portion of his childhood spent in the States led him to adopt English as his first language.

Donnarumma warns PSG 'hungry' for more success at Club World Cup
Paris Saint-Germain's Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma training at the University of California on Wednesday. He says the European champions are hungry for more success at the Club World Cup (YURI CORTEZ) Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma warned Wednesday that the newly crowned European champions were "hungry" for more success at the Club World Cup as they prepared to face Brazil's Botafogo. The French giants launched their Group B campaign in impressive style on Sunday, sweeping aside Atletico Madrid 4-0 at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. Advertisement The victory marked a seamless entrance to the tournament for PSG, a little over two weeks after their 5-0 drubbing of Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League final. Italy's Donnarumma said the team were intently focused on winning a fifth piece of silverware this season after starting the tournament "the same way we finished" the Champions League. "The Club World Cup is a very important competition for us, we must continue to remain 100 percent focused to reach the final and the trophy," the goalkeeper told reporters ahead of Thursday's clash with Botafogo at the Rose Bowl. "Everyone is hungry for victories, to win titles; it's important for now and for next year," he added after training at the University of California. Advertisement Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz said that PSG were comfortable with being tournament favourites. "It's positive if everyone is talking about us, isn't it?" he said. "For our game, what we're doing. But we don't feel that pressure, we don't think about that, but rather about the next match." PSG's opponents Botafogo reached the Club World Cup by winning the Copa Libertadores for the first time in 2024. The Brazilian side opened their campaign with a 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders on Sunday. PSG's Portugal international striker Goncalo Ramos said Botafogo were an unknown quantity. Advertisement "I know them a little, I know the coach, but I don't watch many of their matches because they play late. But they're a good team, it's different for us to play against a team from Brazil," Ramos said. After Thursday's game at the Rose Bowl, PSG will travel north to Seattle for their final group match against the Sounders on Monday. bap/gmo/rcw/dh

Freese or Turner? The U.S. Men's Goalkeeper Debate at Gold Cup Is A Hot Topic
AUSTIN, Texas – Without giving away his starting lineup, U.S. men's national team coach Mauricio Pochettino hinted at where things stand with the goalkeeper situation ahead of the squad's Gold Cup match on Thursday against Saudi Arabia (9:15 p.m. ET on FOX). "I think we all know Matt Turner, how good he is, he's an experienced player," Pochettino told reporters on Wednesday afternoon. "But it's a really tough moment for him after one year he didn't play too much [with his club at Crystal Palace]. I think it's also a good opportunity to take some of the pressure off of him and give an opportunity to another keeper to show it's possible to fight for a place in the World Cup [roster]. "The opportunity for Matt Freese is an opportunity that he deserves because he's played well in his club and of course he's played in two games [for the USMNT] now, and it's an opportunity for Matt Freese to see how he deals with the pressure to be No. 1 in the national team." Pochettino did not say that Freese had unseated Turner as the Americans' starter. However, Freese, 26, has now started two of the last three matches. He earned his first cap in a narrow 2-1 loss to Türkiye in a tune-up friendly before Turner resumed his place in goal during a 4-0 loss to Switzerland. Pochettino went with Freese again in the Gold Cup opener, a resounding 5-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday. Pochettino said ahead of that match that he trusted Turner, but wanted to give Freese more experience. Trinidad and Tobago weren't dangerous around the goal, though the New York City FC goalkeeper was forced to make a couple of big plays. Early in the second half, he got a hand on what otherwise would have been a goal for the Soca Warriors. Earlier this month at the start of camp, Turner, 30, spoke frankly about his place within the USMNT's goalkeeper pecking order. "I don't see myself as the 'No. 1 No. 1' all the time," Turner said. "I think that's my mindset going into every camp right now is that every inch, every opportunity needs to be fought for and every opportunity that I've had under this current staff I've earned by my performances within training and the opportunities that I've had this past season with Crystal Palace. "I never think to myself, 'Oh, I'm going to come in, and I'm going to play, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do that.' And I think anybody could attest to the work that I've put in to earn each opportunity I get." Turner was the USMNT's starting goalkeeper during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, at last summer's Copa América, and he played in both of the Concacaf Nations League matches in March, which ended in disappointing losses to Panama and Canada. But his lack of club minutes has become concerning, especially with the 2026 World Cup on home soil now less than a year away. Aside from playing for the national team, his last competitive match for Crystal Palace was a 3-1 FA Cup win over Millwall on March 1 and he didn't play in a league match all season. Turner is reportedly expected to move to Ligue 1 club Lyon next season, the hope being that would result in more playing time. Meanwhile, Pochettino could go with Freese again versus Saudi Arabia and potentially against Haiti in the team's third and final group stage match on Sunday in Arlington, Texas (7 p.m. ET on FOX). If the U.S. continues to advance in the Gold Cup, the opponents will get tougher, and then Pochettino's decision in goal will become even more fascinating. Pochettino also mentioned on Wednesday that midfielders Tyler Adams (foot) and Johnny Cardoso (illness), who were not available for the last match, trained with the team this week and could be back on the pitch Thursday. It would benefit the U.S. to get two more experienced players back in the lineup as Saudi Arabia is a "really competitive" side, Pochettino said. "They did very well, beating Argentina in the last World Cup, and they've improved a lot," said Pochettino, who is from Argentina. "The characteristics of the Saudi Arabia players is fast, good speed, good technique. Tomorrow will be a challenge for us. I think it's going to be a very good test against a very good team. They beat Haiti, and we both have three points. "I think it's important for us to win the game and know that it's going to be a really tough game." Journalist hints at SEISMIC Liverpool transfer in the works
Liverpool have something else brewing Journalist Ben Jacobs claims Liverpool are still dreaming of Alexander Isak. The Newcastle United striker remains their ultimate target in this transfer window. But Newcastle don't have to sell. In fact, they're proving incredibly difficult to negotiate with after qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. Advertisement Liverpool essentially need to hope that Newcastle would prefer the cash they could get for Isak in order to upgrade their squad. If so, perhaps a deal could happen. Though even then, we're still talking about a transfer record deal. Something that could approach £150m.
