Huge boost for Reds as Crusaders call on All Blacks
Harry Wilson has been named to start for the Queensland Reds against a Crusaders team stacked with All Blacks for their Super Rugby Pacific qualifying final.
The incumbent Wallabies captain looked at long odds to play when he ran off in obvious pain late in Saturday's defeat of the Fijian Drua, just two games into his return from a fractured arm.
But precautionary scans cleared Wilson to return to training this week.
The influential No.8 trained on Tuesday and has been named to start in what is forecast to be a cold, wet Friday-night encounter.
Wilson starred when the Reds ended a 25-year winning drought in Christchurch last year.
He has always been highly rated across the ditch, earning glowing praise from then Crusaders coach Scott Robertson, now helming the All Blacks, after his 2020 Super Rugby debut.
"It's really pleasing news for us but, more importantly, for Harry. He's come through the early part of the week well," coach Les Kiss said. "He's a true competitor when it comes to battles against the New Zealand sides and their top back rows."
Versatile forward Seru Uru (knee) has not been recalled despite training on Tuesday, the Reds' pack unchanged for a third straight game.
Centre Dre Pakeho returns to the bench with Harry McLaughlin-Phillips (HIA) sidelined, while Filipo Daugunu will start on the wing and Tim Ryan will come off the bench.
The Crusaders, who won five consecutive Super Rugby titles either side of the COVID-19 impacted 2020-21 seasons, are on a 16-game finals winning streak dating back to 2016.
They have never lost a finals game at home and have won 13 of their past 14 games against the Reds.
Fullback Will Jordan is back, while captain David Havili returns at centre, the pair among 10 All Blacks in the Crusaders' starting 15.
Former Reds playmaker James O'Connor, hunting a feel-good Wallabies recall ahead of the British and Irish Lions series, will come off the bench.
"This is a strong team, and I can't wait to unleash them come Friday," coach Rob Penney said.

He received a Technical degree in England and rose to chief engineer at Decca Radar in London with a specialty in telecommunications. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1968 and began working in various technical fields, leading to a long career in General Instrument. He was remarkable for his contributions to many branches of creative engineering: if you ever used high definition television, a satellite dish, an IBM machine, a programmable thermostat, or driven a GM or Ford card with computerized dashboard, you have met John Harris. After retiring from GI, he worked for a local firm producing medical research equipment, including Laser Tweezers. In his own LLC company, he completed diverse projects for Los Alamos, Sandia, as well as for private individuals and companies. He was coding on his computer well up until poor health overtook him. At home, he also crafted model airplanes and grew tomatoes. Friends and acquaintances recall John as a warm and generous man, with a British wit and sense of humor that never quit. He was dedicated to high technology that has improved daily life for mankind. And no job was too small for him to lend a hand. John loved the East Mountains. It reminded him of England and Wales. He will remain with us in the East Mountains where he wished to stay. A Celebration of Life service is planned and will be announced in the near future.

D-backs and Reds suspended after 6 innings by rain, will resume Saturday
CINCINNATI — The Arizona Diamondbacks and Cincinnati Reds game on Friday night was suspended by rain with the score tied 3-3 after six innings. The game is scheduled to resume on Saturday at 2:10 p.m. The regularly-scheduled game will begin approximately 40 minutes after the completion of the suspended game. Arizona hit back-to-back homers in the third off Reds left-hander Nick Lodolo with Ketel Marte's two-run shot followed immediately by Geraldo Perdomo's solo homer to make the score 3-0. It's the third time this season that the D-backs have hit consecutive homers, but the first since May 9 against the Dodgers. TJ Friedl's two-run homer trimmed Cincinnati's deficit to 3-2 in the third. Eduardo Rodriguez started for Arizona and allowed two earned runs and five hits in five innings. Reds first baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand, who was reinstated from the injured list Friday, tied the score 3-3 with a solo homer off Cristian Mena in the sixth. It was his first home run since April 5. With the score tied in the sixth, the Reds had runners on first and third with two outs, but Cristian Mena got pinch-hitter Gavin Lux to ground to third ending the inning just before the rain delay. It's the fifth game since Great American Ball Park opened in 2003 to be suspended and completed the next day.
