Homemaker loses 6.9L in WFH fraud
Kolkata: A homemaker from Lake Town lost Rs 6.9 lakh to an online work-from-home scam. The woman, whose husband was unemployed for two months, was lured on social media with a promise of Rs 20 per fake hotel review online.
Initially, she received Rs 200 for 10 reviews, which built her confidence. Soon, she was asked to pay small amounts to unlock high-paying tasks. After earning Rs 1,300 by paying Rs 300, she was told she made an error and had to pay a fine to retrieve pending dues and get further assignments.
Over the next three days, the fraudsters kept escalating demands, extracting Rs 6.9 lakh from her in multiple instalments. "I borrowed from relatives and friends, and now I may have to sell our shop to repay them," she said.
Nobody has been arrested yet. Officers said they tracked down the bank accounts and are in the process of tracing the WhatsApp and Telegram numbers used to communicate with the woman.

Two held from Delhi, Rajasthan for extorting men on dating app
Delhi Police busted a gang that was luring men on dating apps, recording their videos and extorting them, by arresting two men who were operating out of the city and Rajasthan, officers said on Monday. They coerced victims into depositing money online and used multiple accounts to evade detection by authorities. However, police zeroed in on the two men after a 28-year-old man from Shahdara filed a complaint alleging blackmail by a woman he met on a dating app. A senior police officer said, 'He told us that he met a woman online and they soon started texting on WhatsApp. They once got on a video call, in which the woman recorded the call and later threatened him to upload the recording online. He got scared and sent ₹35,000 to a bank account but the woman demanded more money.' The Shahdara cyber cell registered a case and started analysing bank accounts, call records and other digital evidence. 'We found the money was transferred to one account which belonged to a 31-year-old man but was being operated by someone else. We conducted several raids and arrested one of the accused,' the officer said. Police said they arrested 31-year-old Mangal Singh from Alipur in Delhi on Saturday and zeroed in on others based on information provided by him. Dependra Kumar Singh, additional DCP (Shahdara), said a team arrested a 21-year-old man, Shyam Singh, from his home in Rajasthan's Sikri. 'A majority of the extorted funds went to Mangal, followed by another associate known as Sonu, who is still on the run. Another associate Shyam provided email IDs, SIM cards and bank account details to help the gang.' Police said they seized four phones and identified fake profiles on dating apps, besides another associate identified as Aamir. They said they would ascertain if women were involved in trapping the victims or if the gang used online videos.

Delhi woman murdered in UK: Cops build case on family's testimony, witness accounts'
Almost eight months after a 24-year-old Indian-origin woman was murdered allegedly by her husband in London, police sources said they examined around two dozen witnesses and relied mainly on the statement of the victim's family recorded before the sub-divisional magistrate to build their case. Police said they also relied on call data records of mobile numbers of the accused; bank account statement of the woman and her father showing transactions; and the post-mortem report. The husband remains on the run. The Indian Express had earlier reported that he was spotted withdrawing money from a bank in Gurgaon in March. A chargesheet in the case is learnt to have been filed by the Delhi Police in the Dwarka court on June 10. It is learnt that the police have named six people allegedly linked to the case — the husband of the woman, his parents, sister, and his aunt and uncle. His uncle is a Delhi policeman who is currently suspended. The charges, police said, include dowry death and husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty. The FIR was registered on December 3 last year on a complaint by the woman's father. On November 14, 2024, the woman's body was found in the boot of her husband's car at Brisbane Road in East London. A post-mortem examination at the Leicester Royal Infirmary showed she'd been strangled. The accused is also charged with two counts of rape, sexual assault, and controlling or coercive behaviour. In their status report filed earlier, police said the victim's body was received in India on December 1, 2024, along with the coroner's certificate in which the cause of death was mentioned as 'manual strangulation'. 'During the investigation, the complainant had provided some emails that were sent to him by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) of the United Kingdom police department. It mentioned that at 11.34 pm, a friend of woman 'A' informed the Northamptonshire Police that he received a call from the husband of woman 'A' revealing that he had murdered woman 'A' on November 11 and fled to India. Woman 'A' was in her husband's car, parked in Ilford. The Northamptonshire Police reported the matter to the Metropolitan Police, who traced the car at 12.40 am on November 14, in which woman 'A' was found dead,' the status report read. The victim's father, in his complaint to the police, also mentioned he had paid Rs 15 lakh to the accused's family for a visa to the UK. In March, the husband's parents were arrested in the case. Currently, the father is in judicial custody while the mother is out on regular bail. The sister, uncle and aunt are out on anticipatory bail and have joined the probe. The next date of hearing in the case is on July 1. Sakshi Chand is working as an Assistant Editor with the Indian Express.
