Key Suspect In Murshidabad Double Murder Arrested By Bengal STF

Hans India27-04-2025

The Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police has apprehended the main suspect in the killing of a father and son during recent communal tensions in Murshidabad district. According to police sources who spoke with India Today, authorities arrested 24-year-old Fekarul Sk, also known as Mohak, in Howrah district's Domjur area on Saturday night.
Fekarul, who hails from Shamserganj in Murshidabad, has been identified by STF sources as one of the individuals who directly attacked the victims with a sharp weapon, resulting in the deaths of the father-son pair during the April 12 violence in Murshidabad.
Following the double homicide, Fekarul fled the area and sought refuge in Howrah, where he began working as a laborer in Domjur. Investigators discovered his involvement through interrogations of previously arrested suspects. Acting on this intelligence, the STF conducted a raid in Domjur, successfully capturing Fekarul. This arrest brings the total number of individuals detained by West Bengal Police in connection with this case to five.
The violence, linked to protests against proposed amendments to the Waqf Act, resulted in at least three fatalities across Murshidabad and South 24 Parganas districts. Several Hindu homes were vandalized during the unrest, forcing residents to evacuate to relief camps in neighboring Malda district.
The bodies of 70-year-old Harogobindo Das and his 40-year-old son Chandan were discovered in Jafrabad on April 11 with multiple stab wounds. Reports indicate that the family had to conduct funeral rites themselves as the local priest was too fearful to attend due to the tense situation.

Prohibitory orders imposed in Assam's Dhubri after 'breach of peace' amid communal tensions

Prohibitory orders were imposed in Assam's Dhubri town following communal tensions, officials said. Demonstrations were held in the town on Monday to protest the alleged throwing of meat near a temple. Police had to use tear gas shells to bring the situation under control, they said. Issuing an order under section 163 of BNSS, District Magistrate Dibakar Nath on Monday said the restrictions shall come into force with immediate effect and remain in force until further order. "It has been brought to my notice that there is a likelihood of breach of peace and public tranquillity in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of Dhubri Police Station due to communal tension, riot risk, violent protests, etc," he said. Accordingly, he ordered all shops and markets in the Dhubri town area to remain closed and prohibited the assembly of five or more people in any public places. Organising any rally, procession, meeting, or demonstration has also been strictly prohibited, the order mentioned. It exempted the movements of emergency services from the purview of the restrictions, it said. "As the circumstances of the situation do not admit service of notice in due time, this order is passed ex-parte," it added. While speaking to reporters, Nath said, 'I appeal to everyone to maintain peace, and there is no need to panic and get emotional. All must stay indoors and respect each other.' A suspected cow head was found near a temple on Sunday, another officer said. Protesting it, a mob attacked vegetable vendors and e-rickshaw drivers near Dhubri Magistrate Colony and New Market, he said. Nath said that sufficient forces have been mobilised from both state and central agencies, and they have been deployed across the town. Asked if curfew will be imposed, he said, 'There will be no curfew, but a kind of semi-curfew will be there. All shops and markets will be closed. I request all not to pay heed to rumours, and one community must respect the other.' The district administration held meetings between the Hindu and Muslim communities on Sunday and requested both sides to maintain peace. "During today's protest, we lobbed tear gas shells at one place. No one was injured," Nath said without sharing further details. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said a number of cattle were allegedly slaughtered illegally at several places on Eid, on Saturday, and parts of the meat were thrown at multiple locations across the state. He said the police arrested 16 people from different places.

Complainant in Sharmishta Panoli case arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments

The Kolkata Police on Monday arrested Wajahat Khan Qadri, the man whose complaint led to the arrest of 22-year-old law student Sharmishta Panoli, for posting allegedly 'malicious and inflammatory' remarks on social media, The Indian Express reported. Qadri, who was allegedly absconding since June 1, was found in a flat in the city's Amherst Street area, PTI quoted unidentified police officers as saying. He will be produced before a court on Tuesday, The Indian Express reported. A complaint had been registered against him on June 5. He was booked under the same sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita as Panoli: promoting enmity between different groups, deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage the religious feelings of any class of citizens, intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of peace and statements that incite public mischief, The Indian Express had quoted an unidentified police officer as saying earlier. Panoli, a fourth-year business and law student at a Pune university, was arrested by the Kolkata Police in Gurugram on May 30 for her remarks about Prophet Muhammad on social media. She deleted the post later and issued an apology on X. A case was filed against Panoli based on Qadri's complaints on May 15. An arrest warrant had been issued against her on May 17, after which she was arrested from Gurugram, brought to Kolkata on a transit remand and remanded to judicial custody till June 13. The Calcutta High Court on June 5 granted interim bail to the 22-year-old law student. Following Panoli's arrest, at least five complaints were filed against Qadri in West Bengal, including two at the Garden Reach Police Station, for alleged hate speech and derogatory remarks on social media that hurt religious sentiments. Qadri had allegedly demanded action against Panoli on social media and later celebrated her arrest. The first complaint against Qadri was filed by a Hindutva outfit Shri Ram Swabhiman Parishad on June 2. The outfit alleged that his posts promoted enmity between religious groups and demanded his arrest for hurting 'Hindu sentiments'. Several complaints had also been filed against Qadri in different parts of the country, including Mumbai, Delhi and Assam, for alleged hate speech and making derogatory remarks against religious deities on social media. In Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that an FIR was filed against the Qadri for allegedly making 'unacceptable comments against Devi Maa Kamakhya', The Indian Express reported. A three-member team of the Assam Police had earlier visited the area where Qadri lives in Kolkata's Garden Reach.
