In Depth with United Way's Roxann Sebest
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – WKBN Community Affairs Director Dee Crawford sits down with United Way's Roxann Sebest to talk about the organization's work in the Valley.
United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley has been around for 106 years, but it's been in the last 15 years that it's directive has been to look the community and its unique needs.
'During that time, we saw that education, our school systems needed some extra help, and emergency services were still a huge need — food, clothing, shelter, that was still something that the community needed. So in that last 10 years, we've made that shift to really focus on early education, programming Success By Six, Success After Six, really providing wraparound services for the children and their families,' Sebest said.
United Way has broken a record with $3.7 million raised in the community and another $1 million in federal grants to help with its programming.
Payroll deductions for United Way have decreased. Sebest said it used to account for 70% of their fundraising campaign and now it's just 40%.
'So, we needed to make up those funds. We were able to do that through private donations, bigger corporate gifts. A lot of people seeing what we're doing and making those larger gifts,'she said. 'We really needed to diversify our giving not just workplace campaigns.

Seized cars, former police vehicles up for auction in Pa.
(WKBN) – Approximately 400 used vehicles, including former state police vehicles, will be up for auction during the Commonwealth Auction next week. The Pennsylvania Department of General Services' Bureau of Vehicle Management (BVM) announced that the auction is open to the public and will take place on Tuesday, June 17, at 10 a.m. at Manheim Keystone Pennsylvania, located at 488 Firehouse Road in Grantville. An in-person preview of vehicles begins on Saturday, June 14, and will run through Monday, June 16. Previews will take place each day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Grantville auction site. Vehicle offerings will include a variety of 4-wheel drive SUVs, utility vehicles, and pickup trucks, as well as front and all-wheel drive sedans and minivans. This auction will also feature numerous vehicles seized by state law enforcement agencies. Pre-registration is mandatory for the auction and must be completed on or before 4 p.m. Monday, June 16. The auction will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17. Buyers must make purchases with cash, a money order, a cashier's check or a certified check made payable to 'Cox Automotive.' More information is available on the state's website or the auctioneer's website. The June auction is the third of six tentatively scheduled to be held throughout 2025. Governor Evers celebrates recognizes LGBTQ small business owners in Chippewa Falls
CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Governor Tony Evers took time to celebrate Pride month in the Chippewa Valley. He visited with LGBTQ small business owners at Ope, It's Soap in downtown Chippewa Falls. Wisconsin Tourism saw another year of record-breaking economic impact. Evers says that it is, in large part, thanks to small business owners and LGBTQ individuals who contribute to the local and state economy. 'We believe in the rights of LGBTQ folks. They're our neighbors… friends. We have to celebrate that and be proud of the community and what they've accomplished.' Earlier this month, the Governor ordered the Progress Pride flag be raised over the Wisconsin State Capitol to celebrate the start of Pride month. 2025 marks the seventh year in a row that the Pride flag is being flown at the State Capitol in Madison.
