NEW DELHI: A local court in Jammu on Monday granted the National Investigation Agency (NIA) five-day custody of two men arrested for sheltering the
Pakistani terrorists
responsible for the April 22
Pahalgam terror attack
that claimed 26 lives and left 16 others injured, officials said.
The arrested men, Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar of Batkote and Bashir Ahmad Jothar of Hill Park in Pahalgam, were taken into custody by the NIA on Sunday. The arrests mark the first major breakthrough in the probe into what officials described as one of the most gruesome terror strikes in recent years, targeting mostly tourists.

According to the NIA, Parvaiz and Bashir had knowingly harboured three armed terrorists at a seasonal hut (dhok) in Hill Park prior to the attack. Investigators said the duo provided food, shelter, and logistical support to the terrorists.
During interrogation, the two disclosed the identities of the attackers, confirming that they were Pakistani nationals affiliated with the banned terrorist outfit
Lashkar-e-Taiba
(LeT). The NIA also stated that the attackers selectively targeted the victims based on their religious identity.

Espionage case: YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra's judicial custody extended by two weeks

A court here on Monday extended the judicial custody by 14 days of social media influencer Jyoti Malhotra arrested last month on the suspicion of espionage. The Hisar Police arrested Malhotra, who ran a YouTube channel 'Travel with JO', on the suspicion of espionage on May 16. Hailing from Hisar, the Youtuber was arrested at the New Aggarsain Extension and booked under provisions of the Official Secrets Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Malhotra's lawyer Kumar Mukesh said, 'Her judicial remand has been further extended by 14 days and the next date of hearing has been fixed by the court on July 7.' The 33-year-old YouTuber appeared before the court through video-conferencing, he said. Earlier on June 9, another court here had rejected her regular bail plea. Police had opposed the bail and argued that the investigation in this case was still going on. After her arrest on May 16, Malhotra was remanded to five days of police custody by the court. Following the completion of the remand, the court extended the custody by four more days after the police sought to question her further. On May 26, the court remanded her to judicial custody for 14 days, which was further extended later. The Hisar Police previously said no evidence had emerged to indicate Malhotra had access to any military or defence-related information but claimed she was in contact with some people, aware that they were Pakistani intelligence operatives. Police sources had previously said she was in touch with Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, a staffer at the Pakistani High Commission, since November 2023. India expelled Danish on May 13 for allegedly indulging in espionage. Police had last month claimed that Pakistani intelligence operatives were developing Malhotra as an 'asset'.

The deadly crash of the Air India Boeing 787-7 Dreamliner into the hostel complex of BJ Medical College claimed the lives of all but one passenger. Additionally, 29 persons, who were present on the ground in the Meghani Nagar area were also killed. Patel told news agency ANI that the crash took place around 300 metres away from his house, and as soon as they saw the plane turning into a ball of flames, they rushed to the site. "Nothing was visible when we reached the crash site. Our eyes were burning due to the fuel and fire pouring all around us, and there was no place to go inside due to the smoke... After the fire was extinguished, we approached the crash and saw that the bodies of people were lying everywhere," he said. Passports, gold, Gita, and cash In those belongings, Patel said they found, British passports, Indian passports, burnt mobile phones, laptops, and iPads. "We found a passenger's mobile still on, whose screen was broken, and the phone was not working. We found a lot of jewellery. We found 70-80 tolas of gold. We gave that to the officer there. Our effort was that at least the last remains of the deceased could be given to their families," Patel told ANI. Additionally, they also found idols of Lord Krishna and a Bhagavad Gita. He said that all of this stuff was collected from the crash site and handed over to a government officer.
