To think that I saw it on Canterbury St

At dusk I set off for a walk.
I have spent the day on my backside, writing, rewriting or just drinking tea and letting the mind wander. (The mind often works best when left alone. It makes connections according to its own rules of association rather than those imposed on it by language.)
Two girls, aged perhaps 9 or 10, are standing near the kerb of Canterbury St. (The streets of central Lyttelton all bear the names of British cathedral towns. The early settlers of the Canterbury Association saw themselves as pilgrims, and they would not be happy with present-day godless Lyttelton. But the street names endure.)
The girls seem about to cross the road, but they do not do so, even though there isn't a car in sight.
One girl is standing about a metre in front of the other. She has a scooter. (When I was a kid I ached for a scooter, like the one my older brother had. In due course I inherited his, but it was a poisoned gift because he then got a bike.)
The second girl has a table. It's a small thing on casters with legs of polished chrome, like a hospital medicine trolley or similar.
Why she has it, I cannot begin to guess. (Louis MacNeice wrote of ''the drunkenness of things being various''. We are a species that seeks patterns, but, in truth, there is only what happens to happen, oddments, girls with tables.)
(Louis MacNeice is the only person I know of who did what grandmothers are always warning about: he caught his death of cold. He went on a trip for work, got soaked in a downpour, stayed in his wet clothes for the train ride home, caught a chill and died. Although his raging alcoholism may have not have helped.)
All is not well between the girls. The one with the table is looking at the one with the scooter. The one with the scooter is looking at the ground.
They are not speaking but there's a nimbus of thunder about them. (How quick we are to take such things in, to read physical cues. Words are all very well, but our main ways of communication remain wordless, just as they do for, say, dogs that dance around each other at the park.)
I slow my pace. I am in plain view of the girls and perhaps 10m away, but they do not once look up.
It is partly the self-absorption of the young, but also the invisibility of age. (If I think back I can just about remember the sheer irrelevance of anyone over, say, 30. They simply didn't understand, had never been young. And I recall an old man at a cricket club I played for. Eddie Butcher was his name and he was built like a piece of string, with a long long neck. When he'd had a few rums at the cricket club bar he loved to regale us youngsters with an account of his sexual adventures when young, one of which took place on a fur rug in front of ''a roaring fire''. Eddie had that old posh speech defect which substitutes w's for r's, so the pleasure was in listening to him say woawing fire. The sex we didn't believe for one minute. He was so old.)
For no evident reason the girl with the scooter steps off the kerb and sets off across Canterbury St. She is pushing the scooter, not scooting it.
The girl with the table says, ''wait. Come back. You've got to help me''.
The girl with the scooter stops in the middle of the road. There is still no traffic about.
She does not turn around.
''You didn't help me,'' she says.
''But that's different,'' the girl with the table says.
''No it isn't.''
The girl with the table lifts it with some difficulty off the kerb and over the old deep stone gutter (possibly laid by the Canterbury Association all those years ago, in which case it has outlasted their churches. Drainage trumps god).
She half pushes, half pulls the table on its casters until she has nearly caught up with the girl with the scooter.
But the girl with the scooter starts up again without looking at her and stays a metre or so ahead as they cross the road, together and yet not together, in silence.
I walk on. World is ''more of it than we think'', MacNeice (who caught his death of cold) said.

Respected Kiwi writer Maurice Gee - author of 'Plumb' and 'Under the Mountain' - has died, aged 93. Considered one of New Zealand's greatest novelists, his work extended over 50 years. He wrote about ordinary people and ordinary lives, often with the narrator looking back at events that caused damage and unhappiness. "I don't deliberately set out to do this, but the stories turn in that direction following their own logic," he said. "All I can do about it is make the narrative as interesting as I can and give those people lively minds." Maurice Gee was born in Whakatāne in 1931 and educated at Auckland's Avondale College in Auckland and at Auckland University where he took a Masters degree in English. He worked as a teacher and librarian, before becoming a full-time writer in 1975. He passed much of his childhood in what was then the country town of Henderson. The town, disguised as Loomis, and its creek are featured in many of his books. "I grew up alongside that creek in Henderson, and it seemed all sorts of exciting and dangerous things happened down there," he said. "You know, that creek I could plot its whole length pool by pool for a couple of miles even today." His reputation took an enormous leap in 1978 with the publication of 'Plumb', the first of a trilogy about three generations of a family. The novel won the British James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction in 1979. The character of Plumb was based on maternal grandfather Jim Chapple - a Presbyterian minister, who was ejected from the church, because of his rationalist beliefs and jailed for preaching pacifism during World War I. Gee inherited strong left-wing views from that side of his family and a burden of sexual puritanism, which he said caused him a tortured adolescence, although he denied claims of a strong authorial voice in his work. "I can't look at my books the way I read other books," he said. "I look at them quite differently. "I'm intimately connected with them and probably wouldn't be able to indentify my voice in them, if someone asked me to." He said his novel 'Crime Story' stemmed from his anger over the changes made in New Zealand by the Lange Labour Government in the 1980s, and politicians and businessmen are seldom portrayed favourably in his books. Gee's output included short stories and television scripts, and his children's fiction was highly regarded, although it was not his preferred genre. "Children's writing seems to be easier than adult writing, because it's coming off a different level," he said. "There's still some pleasure to be got from both and I try to do each as professionally as I possibly can, but the thing that really engages me fully is adult fiction." Written in 1979, 'Under the Mountain' was probably his best-known children's work, and was later converted into a film and TV series. He received many awards for his work, including the Burns and Katherine Mansfield Fellowships, honorary degrees from Victoria and Auckland universities, and the Prime Minister's Award for literary merit. He won the the Deutz Medal for fiction in 1998 for his novel 'Live Bodies' and the 2006 Montana New Zealand Book Award for 'Blindsight'. "Sad to hear of Maurice Gee's passing," Arts, Culture & Heritage Minister Paul Goldsmith said. "Our thoughts are with his family. "He was a prolific and graceful author. 'Plumb' is my favorite, although thousands of Kiwis will have their own." "Maurice Gee was a real giant of New Zealand literature and so many people grew up reading his stories, including me," Nelson MP and Labour arts, culture & heritage spokesperson Rachel Boyack said. "Really sad that one of our beloved constituents has passed away. He was a private person - I didn't know him well - but he made a big contribution to Nelson, not just through his writing. "He was involved in groups like Friends of the Maitai, who do a huge amount of work to protect our river that runs through inner city Nelson. "Wonderful that he was able to live such a full life, but sad when we lose someone that has made such a significant contribution to our nation." Gee is survived by wife Margareta, their two daughters, and a son from an early relationship.

The lone passenger who survived the Air India crash that killed 241 people onboard couldn't believe he was alive when he opened his eyes — surrounded by flames, debris and charred bodies. The British national of Indian origin, Viswashkumar Ramesh, was headed to London when the flight crashed minutes after taking off from India's northwestern city of Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon (local time). It was one of India's worst aviation disasters and the first crash for a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner since the widebody, twin-engine planes went into service in 2009, according to the Aviation Safety Network database. Currently admitted in a local government hospital, Ramesh narrated his ordeal to India's national broadcaster, saying the aircraft seemed stuck mid air within a few seconds of the take off. He said green and white lights came on, and immediately after that, the aircraft engines accelerated but seemed unable to gain height before it crashed. "I told Modi what all I had witnessed. He also enquired about my health," Ramesh said from his hospital bed. "He video called my dad as he crashed and said, 'Oh the plane's crashed. I don't know where my brother is. I don't see any other passengers. I don't know how I'm alive, how I exited the plane'," he told Sky.
