This disgusting Netflix documentary will put you off cruises for life

Telegraph4 hours ago

Sure, you've had bad holidays. The one where it rained every day. That time the airline lost your luggage and you had to spend 48 hours wearing the same pants. But have you ever been forced to spend four days defecating into a plastic bag on a cruise ship that just caught fire and is now adrift in the Gulf of Mexico? That was the fate of 4,200 people aboard the Carnival Triumph, and the story is retold to hilarious effect in Trainwreck: Poop Cruise (Netflix).
It's a terrible title and a gross subject but it's one of the funniest documentaries I've seen in ages. British director James Ross was Bafta-nominated a few years back for a serious film about Anton Ferdinand and racism. Here he demonstrates a flair for comedy, stitching together the recollections of passengers and crew. They are well-chosen and well-edited, including three friends who were on a hen weekend – the vibe is very Bridesmaids – and a man who was on holiday with his father-in-law for the first time, desperate to impress.
The crew members include a droll Indian chef and a British cruise director called Jen. It was Jen who issued a chirpy, Hi-de-Hi message over the tannoy after the ship ran into trouble: 'When you do need to do a number one, you can do it in the shower. And if you need to do a number two, we're going to deliver some red bags – we ask that you please do it in the red bag and drop it off in the bins in the corridors.' The contributors run through their reactions to that directive: 'You want me to do what?' 'I'm not doing that.' 'What world are we living in?'
Here's what happened: midway through a cruise from Texas to Mexico in 2013, a fire broke out in the Triumph's engine room. It caused the power to cut out, which not only plunged the ship into darkness but caused the toilets to stop flushing. Guests were told that they'd be towed back to Cozumel the following day. But the ship drifted out of Mexican waters and it was four days before they eventually made it to port in Mobile, Alabama.
Phone footage helps to build up a picture of life on board: a tent city of mattresses dragged up on deck and shaded by bedsheets, two-hour queues for food rations, fights over the last available deckchair. 'Ha!' says a Russian bartender. 'Now all these Americans can feel what it was like in dictatorship countries where s--- like this happens and it doesn't surprise anyone. Welcome to the Soviet Union, people!'
But it's those red bags that haunt everyone. And it's the winning honesty of the contributors that makes this documentary a gem. The Russian crew member cheerfully admits that she was in bed with one of the engineers when the fire alarm went off. The bridal party were sleeping off hangovers after overdoing it in Mexico ('We left our dignity in Mexico').
Some, like the chap on holiday with his father-in-law, were determined to hang on to their dignity. For others, it was impossible. The men could pee overboard but the women had to crouch in the shower, using the flashing beacon light from a life jacket as illumination. 'This is my first cruise,' says a member of the hen party, 'but I don't think this is normal.'
The documentary is only an hour long, which is good, because you wouldn't want much more of this (there is an analogy about lasagne which will live long in the memory). And perhaps if this had happened to a boatload of Germans, the tone would have been different. But these were party-loving Americans. When things got really bad, the staff laid on a free bar. Even in the midst of a sanitary nightmare, everyone was keen to hit the tequila. As one of the guests puts it: 'Cruises are supposed to be fun. It's free booze. Let's go!'

Rachel Zegler reveals candid deails about how she reacted following her film Snow White's commercial failure

Rachel Zegler has revealed details about how she 'wasn't functioning' after the live action remake of Snow White bombed at the box office. The actress, 24, addressed the backlash that she received and admitted that the conversation around the film made her extremely anxious. The $270million remake of the 1937 classic was beset by multiple controversies including dumping the traditional 'sexist' romance plot to reimagining the Seven Dwarfs as a diverse group of 'magical creatures' of all heights, gender and race. The 2025 adaptation was a box office disappointment, with worldwide gross falling short of expectations and estimated losses reaching into the hundreds of millions. Rachel took the brunt of the blame for the film underperforming its massive budget - grossing just $69million domestically - and becoming slated on film review sites. Speaking about the effect the film's shortcomings had on her, Rachel told i-D magazine: 'My f***ing psychiatrist has seen me through all of it,' she says. The $270million remake of the 1937 classic was beset by multiple controversies including dumping the traditional 'sexist' romance plot to reimagining the Seven Dwarfs as a diverse group of 'magical creatures' of all heights, gender and race She said she needed someone to remind her that, "What you're going through isn't normal", that sentence did such wonders for me in multiple situations in my life.' Rachel also told how she got medicated for her anxiety too, 'which was truly a game changer, because I just wasn't functioning. 'And I wanted to function in a way that made me feel confident in the way I was moving through the world.' Rachel also spoke about those with a 'victim mindset' and her experiences with perceived negativity, saying:'I think a victim mindset is a choice, and I don't choose it. 'I also don't choose nastiness in the face of it. I don't choose negativity in the face of it. I choose positivity and light and happiness. 'And I do believe at times, happiness is absolutely a choice, and every day I wake up and I think I'm very lucky to live the life I live.' The lead actress came under fire almost immediately after her casting due to her Colombian and Polish mixed heritage. Many fans were upset since the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale describes the character as having, 'skin as white as snow.' Rachel previously said that the origin story has changed, and in Disney's new version the princess earns the name due to a snowstorm she survived as a child. The lead then came under fire for criticising the 1937 animation, calling it 'dated' during a red carpet interview with Extra TV in 2022. 'There's a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird. So we didn't do that this time,' she said. 'We have a different approach to what I'm sure a lot of people will assume is a love story just because we cast a guy in the movie.' Rachel eventually walked back her comments and assured fans that the love story would be 'integral' to the remake's plot. Disney fans then expressed discontent at Rachel when she said she was 'scared' of the original version as a child and only watched it one time. Rachel wasn't the only point of criticism during the making of the film, as the remake's Evil Queen Gal Gadot became a subject of backlash for her stance on the Gaza war. Gal, an Israeli native who also served in the Israel Defense Force, has been vocal about her support for the country. Meanwhile, Rachel on the other hand, expressed her support for freeing Palestine from Israel's occupation. Disney's attempts to make the remake friendlier to 'woke' audiences have fallen flat at times, with actor Peter Dinklage calling out the company's hypocrisy in 2022. 'It makes no sense to me,' he told Mark Maron on the WTF podcast. 'You're progressive in one way and you're still making that f***ing backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f*** are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I'm not loud enough.' The film also suffered yet another rather humiliating blow, with its dreadful 1.5 rating on IMDB currently one of the worst of all time. A review by Daily Mail's Brian Viner gave the film a pitiful two stars, calling it 'a painfully muddle-headed affair.' 'Disney's contorted attempts not to offend anyone have somehow managed to offend everyone,' Viner wrote.

Legendary horror film franchise described as '100% dead' gets exciting update in huge win for fans

A legendary horror film franchise that was described as '100% dead' has received an exciting update in a huge win for fans. The first ever Saw film hit screens in 2004 and ten movies later, the gory tale has captivated viewers for years. After the initial release, the film put stars Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith on the map, who would return as John Kramer a.k.a. Jigsaw and Amanda Young in several sequels. Back in December 2023, Saw XI was announced for a September 2024 release following the huge success of Saw X. However, earlier this year it was revealed the film was 'stalled at a managerial level' and writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan claimed they have been blanked by Lionsgate since turning in a draft in May 2024 in an interview with THR. The most recent film in the Tobin Bell-led franchise - Saw X - was released in September 2023 and was a critical and commercial success. Melton, who has worked on the franchise since 2007's Saw IV said: 'It's stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There's higher-level things at play.' Saw XI addresses a 'timely topic' Melton confirmed, although plot details have been not revealed. 'It taps into the same themes of Saw VI, where you're a citizen, you feel angry and frustrated with something, you feel like you can't do anything, and John Kramer's going to do it.' Melton further claimed the film was 'held up' due to 'inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate. They just can't quite get on the same page.' A source added to Bloody Disgusting of Saw XI: 'It's totally dead. It's 100% over. Almost a year now.' Now, it has been reported that Blumhouse has acquired part of the Saw franchise from Twisted Pictures, with Lionsgate still continuing as a partner. It marks a positive move for the future of the 11th movie, though no information about it has been released yet. The Hollywood Reporter told how Blumhouse boss Jason Blum said: 'The Saw franchise has defined a generation of horror, and its cultural impact continues to grow, making this a strategic investment in one of the most recognisable and successful genre properties of the last two decades. 'But what really excites me about bringing Saw to Blumhouse is having James and Leigh back in the fold and to see the future of the franchise come to life with their guidance.' It means James Wan, who directed the first ever Saw film, could be involved with the series again. He said: 'Saw holds a special place in my heart—it's where Leigh and I began our Hollywood journey. Coming back to this world with a fresh perspective is both thrilling and deeply personal. 'For me, this will mark a significant creative return to the Saw franchise for the first time since the early days, and I'm very much looking forward to embracing the original spirit whilst pushing the legacy forward in bold, unexpected ways.' While Twisted Pictures co-owner Oren Koules said: 'With the success of the tenth film, this felt like the right time to pass the baton. I'm incredibly proud of what we've built with Lionsgate over the past 20 years and deeply grateful to the fans who've been with us since the beginning. 'It's especially meaningful to see the franchise return to its original creators, James and Leigh, and I can't think of a better partner than Jason to lead Saw into its next chapter.' Co-owner Mark Burg added: '21 years ago, we met James Wan and Leigh Whannell and financed the first Saw movie. The film was magical and a hit beyond our wildest dreams, and our fans kept the franchise alive for over 20 years. 'It's been an amazing ride and, with the recent passing of our beloved executive producer, Jason Constantine, it's time for me to move on and tell new stories. 'Saw will always be a part of my history and Hollywood history, and I hope Jigsaw and the Saw Universe live on for many more movies and years to come. 'Lastly, I'd like to thank all the amazing actors, crew, and Lionsgate executives who have worked with us on 10 movies over the past 20 years — none of this could have happened without you all. 'We wish James, Leigh and Jason huge success with the continuation of the franchise.'
