Alex Ovechkin goals tracker: 'The Great Eight' is 5 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time record of 894
Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin is on the doorstep of an NHL record that many thought was unbreakable.
The 39-year-old Ovechkin is closing in on Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL goals record of 894. "The Great One" scored his final goal on March 29, 1999. "The Great Eight" could very well surpass that mark before the end of the 2024-25 season.

Ovechkin entered this season with 853 career NHL goals and started off red hot with 15 goals in his first 18 games. A broken fibula in November took him out of the lineup for almost five weeks, but when he returned to the Capitals he didn't miss a beat with four goals in his first five games back from injury.
Ovechkin's latest goal, No. 890 of his career, came against the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday. He scored in front of the goal to cut Buffalo's lead to 6-4 midway through the third period.
He's now four goals away from tying Gretzky and five goals from breaking the record. The Capitals have nine games remaining on their schedule after Sunday.
"It's just a matter of time, whether it's late this year, early next year, whenever," Gretzky told NHL.com earlier this season about Ovechkin's chances of breaking his record. "I mean, he's a great player. He's a great goal scorer."

As he moves closer to breaking Gretzky's record, Ovechkin has partnered with Hockey Fights Cancer and the V Foundation for Cancer Research to launch "THE GR8 CHASE for Victory Over Cancer." The campaign will see Ovechkin donate a dollar amount equal to his career NHL goal total for each goal he scores for the rest of his career. Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which owns the Capitals, will match every donation.
Ovechkin continues his chase for Gretzky's mark on Sunday against the Buffalo Sabres.

The 28-year-old from Louisiana finished 18 under and finished second to Ryan Fox, who beat him in four extra holes. Advertisement While probably disappointed in last week's result, Burns is carrying that stellar play into Oakmont, following up a first-round 72 with a 5-under 65 on Friday. Burns made six birdies and just one bogey and will head into the weekend likely in firm contention at 3 under. Victor Perez makes the first ace at the 2025 U.S. Open On Thursday, Patrick Reed's albatross dominated headlines as the best shot of the day. But France's Victor Perez has an early entry for shot of the day on Friday, and it's going to be tough to beat. Scottie Scheffler not out of US Open just yet despite looking human
OAKMONT, Pa. — Sometimes, even Superman struggles. Scottie Scheffler doesn't wear a cape. Advertisement But the golf he's played for the past two years has been otherworldly. The gap between his No. 1 world ranking and the rest of the pack is reminiscent of the gaping advantage Tiger Woods built when he was dominating in his prime. Scheffler won seven times last season, including the Masters and the Players Championship. He entered this week's U.S. Open at Oakmont having won three times in his previous four starts, including the PGA Championship and Memorial. Getty Images Understandably, he entered this week as such an overwhelming favorite to win that the gamblers' chatter was about whether to bet on Scheffler or the rest of the 156-player field. And yet, the surprise of this week is how human Scheffler has looked, which is to say he's resembled an impostor of the man who's been, with his head down and face without expression, coldly mowing down the rest of the PGA Tour. And I battled pretty hard to stay in there. I'm 4-over. Around this golf course I don't think by any means I'm out of the tournament.'' Scheffler, who has uncharacteristically been fighting his driver with a case of the lefts this week, entered the week having made the cut in his previous 56 starts. His last missed cut came on Aug. 14, 2022 at the St. Jude Classic. He entered the week having played in 21 major championships as a pro and missed the cut only twice — in the 2019 U.S. Open and the 2022 PGA. But it's tough to deny that an attacking unit containing Wirtz, Barcola and Mohamed Salah would be an exciting watch next season. Barcola is valued at €70m, according to Transfermarkt.
