SoCal Edison to pay record settlement for sparking massive L.A. County wildfire

Yahoo23-05-2025

Southern California Edison will pay a record-breaking price to settle a lawsuit alleging the utility sparked a massive blaze in Los Angeles County.
Edison has agreed to pay $82.5 million, the largest settlement by the U.S. in California's Central District, for its role in the Bobcat Fire, which burned for more than 80 days and scorched 116,000 acres in the fall of 2020.
The federal government alleged that the fire was sparked on Sept. 6, 2020, when trees came into contact with SCE power lines. Prosecutors accused Edison and its tree maintenance contractor of not properly maintaining those trees to prevent potential flares.
The fire burned approximately 175 square miles, primarily in the Angeles National Forest and San Gabriel Mountains, and caused extensive damage to public lands and habitats of several federally protected species.
The blaze also destroyed 171 structures, damaged 47 others, totaled 178 vehicles, and displaced thousands of residents while blanketing much of Southern California under a dense cloud of acrid smoke.
More than 100 miles of trails and multiple National Forest campgrounds were closed for years by the Bobcat Fire, which grew to be one of the largest and most expensive fires in the county's history.
The settlement with SCE will help the federal government recoup costs of battling the blaze, which was estimated to have cost more than $100 million.
As part of the agreement, Edison did not admit fault or any wrongdoing.
'We are grateful to receive these settlement funds, which mark an important step toward recovery and restoration,' said Angeles National Forest Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez. 'These resources will help us rehabilitate burned areas, restore wildlife habitats, and strengthen our forests' resilience to future wildfires.'
The settlement was agreed to on May 14, and Edison will have 60 days from that date to complete its payment, the U.S. Department of Justice said.

HistoSonics' histotripsy system receives early market access authorisation in UK

Amid reports of an acquisition by one of the leading players in the medical device space, HistoSonics' Edison histotripsy system has been granted controlled early limited market access in the UK under an Unmet Clinical Need Authorisation (UCNA). The US company received the UCNA under the UK's Innovative Devices Access Pathway (IDAP), launched by the UK Government in 2023 to help fast-track 'transformative medical technologies' into the healthcare system. Designed for the non-invasive destruction of liver tumours, the Edison system delivers focused ultrasound to target and eliminate cancerous liver tissue. The device received de novo clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2023. HistoSonics' president and CEO Mike Blue said the company was 'honoured' to work alongside the National Health Service (NHS) to bring histotripsy to UK patients, many of whom have 'limited options'. He states: 'Securing controlled access through the IDAP pilot programme is a tremendous milestone for HistoSonics and signals clear recognition of our technology's potential to transform healthcare.' HistoSonics' authorisation comes as reports emerge that potential buyers are considering acquiring the company. According to a 1 May report by the Financial Times, HistoSonics is seeking a valuation of more than $2.5bn, with Medtronic, GE HealthCare and Johnson & Johnson (J&J), a longtime backer of HistoSonics, among the interested parties evaluating the business. J&J most recently participated in the company's $102m Series D funding round. HistoSonics was selected for a UCNA under the IDAP programme after the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) determined that histotripsy devices may provide "public health value" for patients with primary or metastatic liver tumours. Other companies awarded part of a £10m funding package from the MHRA last year to expedite their medical devices' entry onto the UK market included Upfront Diagnostics for a portable blood test, and Lenus Health for an AI-based tool to predict patients' risk of hospitalisation for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Earlier this month, healthcare payor Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) and health plan option Blue Care Network became the first US medical insurer to cover non-thermal histotripsy using HistoSonics' Edison system. "HistoSonics' histotripsy system receives early market access authorisation in UK" was originally created and published by Medical Device Network, a GlobalData owned brand. California Utility Agrees to Pay $82.5 Million to Settle Claims From 2020 Fire

LOS ANGELES—Southern California Edison has reached a record $82.5 million settlement with the United States to resolve claims stemming from the 2020 Bobcat Fire in the Angeles National Forest, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday. The U.S. government sued SoCal Edison in September 2023, alleging in Los Angeles federal court that the Bobcat Fire—one of the largest wildfires ever in Los Angeles County—was caused by the failure of the utility and its tree maintenance contractor to properly maintain trees that came into contact with power lines and caused the blaze. The Bobcat Fire ignited in September 2020 and scorched more than 114,000 acres—nearly 175 square miles—of which nearly 100,000 acres were in the Angeles National Forest. 'This record settlement against Southern California Edison provides meaningful compensation to taxpayers for the extensive costs of fighting the Bobcat Fire and for the widespread damage to public lands,' U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli for the Central District of California said in a statement. 'My office will continue to aggressively pursue recovery for suppression costs and environmental damages from any entity that causes harm to the public's forests and other precious national resources.' The utility agreed to pay the settlement without admitting wrongdoing or fault. SoCal Edison spokeswoman Gabriela Ornelas said public safety remains a company priority. Related Stories 3/6/2025 2/27/2024 'Our hearts are with the people who were affected by the Bobcat Fire,' she told City News Service. 'We are pleased to have resolved this matter and will continue to advance wildfire mitigation measures to further enhance public safety and resiliency.' The U.S. filed suit on behalf of the U.S. Forest Service against SoCal Edison and Utility Tree Service to recover costs incurred fighting the wildfire and for the extensive damages caused to the forest. The wildfire started on Sept. 6, 2020, and resulted in more than three times the acreage damage caused by the Eaton and Palisades wildfires combined. The fire caused years of closure of more than 100 miles of trails and numerous campgrounds. It also had a detrimental impact on habitats and wildlife, including to the federally endangered wildlife-mountain yellow-legged frog, federally threatened fish and birds, and irreplaceable cultural and heritage resources, according to the DOJ. The settlement is considered the largest-ever wildfire cost recovery by the U.S. in the region. According to the complaint, the Forest Service sustained fire suppression costs in excess of $56 million, and it incurred property and natural resource damages of more than $65 million. 'Forest Service investigators determined that the Bobcat Fire ignited due to a tree in contact with power lines (conductors) owned and operated by SCE and maintained by SCE and UTS,' the lawsuit states. 'The contact resulted in ignition of vegetation on a branch, which fell to the ground and spread.' The wildfire destroyed 171 structures and 178 vehicles, damaged 47 structures, and resulted in the widespread evacuation of residences. It took weeks to put the fire out. In 2021, the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services announced the approval of more than $50,000 in reimbursements to help cover damages to Arcadia and Monrovia caused by the fire. The funding helped cover the costs of engineering and constructing a parking lot at the entrance of Canyon Park in Monrovia, and the costs of labor and equipment to clear vegetative debris from Wilderness Park in Arcadia, according to a Cal OES statement. SoCal Edison agreed to pay the $82.5 million settlement by July 14. 'We are grateful to receive these settlement funds, which mark an important step toward recovery and restoration,' said Deputy Forest Supervisor Tony Martinez of the Angeles National Forest. 'These resources will help us rehabilitate burned areas, restore wildlife habitats, and strengthen our forests' resilience to future wildfires.'
