SCIENTISTS have urged people aged 45 to 65 to do a key activity in order to help prevent Alzheimer's disease.
Whether we develop the memory-robbing disease - caused by a building of toxic proteins in the brain - won't always be within our control.

But scientists say that increasing the amount we exercise each week could help protect our brain health.
A new study conducted by experts at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health and the Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Centre said boosting physical activity during middle age could be particularly beneficial.
In fact, it's been estimated that 13 per cent of Alzheimer's disease cases worldwide could be linked to physical inactivity.
Previous research has shown that exercise reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease by improving cardiovascular and mental health.
More recent studies suggest that physical activity may directly affect how Alzheimer's develops in the brain.
Lead author of the new study published in Alzheimer's & Dementia - doctoral researcher Müge Akıncı - said: 'We conducted a four-year follow-up of middle-aged residents of Catalonia with a family history of Alzheimer's disease.
"We used physical activity questionnaires to assess changes in activity over a four-year period and neuroimaging tests to analyse the effects of exercise on brain structure and function."
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that adults engage in 150 to 300 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous exercise per week.
Participants were classified as adherent if they met WHO exercise recommendations, non-adherent if they exercised less than recommended or sedentary if they didn't exercise at all.
Alzheimer's disease is thought to be caused by the abnormal build-up of proteins in and around brain cells.

One of the proteins involved is called amyloid, which forms plaques around brain cells.
The other protein is called tau, which forms tangles within brain cells.
This process can begin years before symptoms of Alzheimer's begin to appear.
Participants who increased their physical activity to meet WHO-recommended levels showed less beta-amyloid accumulation in their brains than those who remained sedentary or exercised less.
Other ways to reduce your Alzheimer's risk
Be physically active
Regular physical activity is crucial for overall health and may help reduce the risk of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week.
Eat a healthy diet
A balanced diet, potentially including the Mediterranean diet, can help reduce your risk of dementia, as well as other health conditions.
Stay mentally active
Keeping your mind active can strengthen your brain's ability to cope with disease. Engage in activities like reading, learning new skills, or playing brain games.
Manage other health conditions
Maintaining healthy blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels can also contribute to reducing your risk of dementia.
Prioritise sleep
Aim for seven to eight hours of quality sleep each night, as sleep deprivation can negatively impact brain health.
Maintain good heart health
Taking care of your heart health, including avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, can also lower your risk of dementia and other diseases.
Seek medical advice
If you have any concerns about your health or a family history of Alzheimer's, consult with a healthcare professional.
Researchers also found that participants who increased their physical activity had reduced amyloid deposits in their brain.
Participants who exercises often also had more cortical thickness in brain regions associated with Alzheimer's disease.
Cortical thickness in the medial temporal area of the brain is important for memory, so any thinning or loss of volume can be an early sign of cognitive decline.
Dr Akıncı said: 'Even those who did less physical activity than recommended had greater cortical thickness than sedentary people, suggesting that any amount of exercise, no matter how minimal, has health benefits."
Researchers added that increasing activity over time rather than trying to reach a specific amount of hours a week seemed to benefit participants' brain health.
Lead investigator Eider Arenaza-Urquijo said: 'These findings reinforce the importance of promoting physical activity in middle age as a public health strategy for Alzheimer's prevention."
'Interventions aimed at promoting increased physical activity could be key to reducing the incidence of the disease in the future."

Top scientists flag little-known earliest signs of dementia that have nothing to do with memory
Changes in sight, hearing, taste, touch and balance are little-known dementia signs that can strike years before more well-known symptoms, experts have warned. Dementia, a condition which blights the lives of millions, famously causes problems with patients' memory, language and mood. Medics, using tools like memory tests and interviews, assess these when diagnosing the condition. But now scientists say there is substantial evidence that dementia starts to impair the senses many years before a patient shows the classic signs. This they say, offers hope that sensory changes can be used as an early warning sign and help patients be diagnosed far sooner. They have now called for such changes to be included in standard dementia diagnostic tests which have predominantly focused on recording memory difficulties. An early diagnosis for dementia is considered critical as, while the condition is incurable, treatments can combat symptoms and sometimes slow progression. The team includes three dementia experts in Professor Andrea Tales, of Swansea University, Dr Emma Richards of Public Health Wales and Professor Jan Kremláček of Charles University in Prague. 'Broadening the diagnostic approach beyond memory testing raised the potential to identify dementia at preclinical stages when therapies and life modifications may be most effective,' Professor Kremláček explained. Dr Richards added: 'Many patients report experiencing these sensory changes years before receiving a diagnosis, but these symptoms may be overlooked during standard cognitive assessments. 'Understanding and addressing these issues, and providing support earlier could be transformative, enabling health care providers to offer the vital emotional and social support patients need at a potentially confusing and distressing time. 'In addition to this, understanding changes in a person's senses can help support a clinician in determining a dementia diagnosis.' Dementia, and particularly early signs of the condition, has been linked to changes in sensory perception before. As the condition is neurodegenerative, meaning it causes continuous brain atrophy, loss of brain tissue and volume, over time, this is believed to have an impact on how our senses function, even in the early stages. Earlier this year neurologists highlighted that a loss of sense of smell could be an early sign of dementia and strike 10-years before better-known symptoms. It isn't just smell—vision disturbances and problems with balance are some of the earliest, but often dismissed, signs, especially in younger patients. Writing for The Conversation earlier this year, Molly Murray, an expert in young-onset dementia from the University of West Scotland, said for many patients the first sign of the condition is a problem with their eyes. 'Research shows that for around one third of people with young-onset Alzheimer's disease [the most common form of dementia] , the earliest symptoms they had were problems with coordination and vision changes,' she wrote. Experts have also warned that problems with spatial awareness such as standing too close to people are also potential dementia warning signs which can occur up to twenty years before the classic symptoms. More than 944,000 people in the UK are thought to be living with dementia, while the figure is thought to be around seven million in the US. Recent analysis by the Alzheimer's Society estimated the overall annual cost of the dementia to the UK is £42billion a year, with families bearing the brunt. An ageing population means these costs—which include lost earnings of unpaid carers—are set to soar to £90billion in the next 15 years. A separate Alzheimer's Research UK analysis found 74,261 people died from dementia in 2022 compared with 69,178 a year earlier, making it the country's biggest killer.

Scotland's births continue to fall - showing we need more migration
The National Records of Scotland (NRS) published the latest statistics on the number of births and deaths in Scotland in the first quarter of 2025, showing a continued downward trend in the number of children born. Equalities minister Kaukab Stewart said the figures showed that Scotland needs migration to support the population, and criticised UK Labour's approach to the immigration system. NRS said that there were 11,431 births registered between January 1 and March 31 2025, 460 below the average of 11,891. In the same period there were 16,721 deaths, 1402 fewer (7.7 per cent) than expected. Scotland's birth rate is also continuing to decline, at 8.4 live births per 1000 population. You can see some of the key figures below. Number of births As the above graph shows, the number of births since 2014, in each first quarter, are on a continual decline. In 2014 there were 13,930 births between January and March, the latest figures show this has now dropped to 11,431. The overall birth rate for the first quarter of each year is also on a decline from 2014 as the above graph shows. In 2014, it was 10.6 live births per 1000 population, and now it sits at 8.4. This has been a constant trend since 2014, according to NRS figures, which you can see in the graph below. In 2025, the leading cause of death was cancer. Phillipa Haxton, head of vital events statistics at NRS, said: 'Cancer remained by far the leading cause of death with 4118 deaths compared to the next largest cause, respiratory diseases at 2291. 'The top four causes also include Alzheimer's disease and other dementias and coronary heart disease. Together these made up 60 per cent of all deaths.' Why does it matter? The last Scottish Census revealed that if it hadn't been for migration, Scotland's population would have declined. And as we previously told, Scotland needs migration more than the rest of the UK because of its specific circumstances. As the country is facing a population decline, experts have said that tailored migration could in part help to solve the issue. Stewart said of the latest figures: 'The latest statistics highlight what we already know, that without migration, Scotland's working age population will fall as deaths continue to outnumber births. 'Positive net migration is essential for supporting the size of the working-age population in Scotland, which is crucial for economic growth, public service planning, and community cohesion. "Later this week the Scottish Parliament will debate how we can continue to attract and retain the migrants we need as part of a system that works for Scotland. 'We need talented and committed people from across the world to live, work and study here without excessive barriers. A one-size fits all approach to immigration fails to meet the needs of Scotland and much of the UK. 'We are deeply disappointed that the UK Government's white paper on immigration fails to take on board our proposals to help meet Scotland's distinct demographic and economic requirements. 'That is why we are calling on the UK Government to deliver changes to the immigration system that meets the distinct needs of our economy and population, in particular our rural and island communities.' The Labour Government has taken a hard-line approach to immigration, facing criticism for moving to the right with its proposals to stop small boat crossings, and removing visa routes for those working in the care sector. Repeated calls for a bespoke immigration visa for Scotland to tackle shortages in sectors such as care, agriculture and hospitality, have been blocked in Westminster.

It comes after British health authorities sounded the alarm over a potential surge of measles in England, warning families may bring back the contagious disease after travel abroad this summer. They urged families to make sure their kids are up to date with their vaccines before going on holiday - taking special care they've received two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) jab. A dip in childhood vaccinations - including the jab that protects against measles - in England leaves more children at risk of disease, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) explained. "Measles is an acute, highly contagious viral disease capable of causing epidemics," the ECDC wrote in its report. "It is a serious disease that can lead to complications and even death." The infection starts with cold-like symptoms, followed by a rash and white spots in the mouth a few days later. In some cases, the virus can lead to life-threatening complications, like brain inflammation and pneumonia. The best way to protect yourself from getting ill is getting the MMR vaccine. But if you haven't received the jab, it's almost 100 per cent likely you'll get infected if you come in contact with someone with measles, according to the ECDC. "The highest case counts were reported by Romania (402), France (186), Netherlands (111), Belgium (100) and Spain (52)," it wrote. The health watchdog noted that case numbers for April were lower than those reported in March - but it said a number of measles outbreaks have been reported in the region in the past year. Countries such as Italy have also seen high case numbers - with 85 reported in March and 36 in April. Between May 2024 and April 2025, 30 European countries reported a total of 22,481 cases of measles. Almost half (44 per cent) occurred in children under the age of five, while 29 per cent occurred in people aged 15 and over. "The highest notification rates were observed in infants under one year of age and children aged one to four years," the ECDC wrote. Health authorities were given information about people's vaccination status for 20,669 cases of the cases reported in the last 12 months. Eighty-five per cent of them occurred in unvaccinated patients and another 9 per cent occurred in people with just one dose of the MMR jab. Among the 7,194 cases reported in children aged one to four, 84 per cent were unvaccinated and 10 per cent had one dose of a measles-containing vaccine. The main symptoms of measles MEASLES is highly contagious and can cause serious problems in some people. The infection usually starts with cold-like symptoms, followed by a rash a few days later. The first signs include: A high temperature A runny or blocked nose Sneezing A cough Red, sore, watery eyes Small white spots may then appear inside the cheeks and on the back of the lips. A rash tends to come next. This usually starts on the face and behind the ears before spreading to the rest of the body. The spots are sometimes raised and join together to form blotchy patches. They are not normally itchy. The rash looks brown or red on white skin. It may be harder to see on darker skin. Complications are rare, but measles can lead to pneumonia, meningitis, blindness, seizures, and sometimes death. Source: NHS The first MMR vaccine is offered to infants when they turn one year old and the second dose to pre-school children when they are around three years and four months old. "Infants under one year are particularly vulnerable to measles and its complications," the ECDC wrote. "They are best protected by a high level of herd immunity." Fourteen deaths as a result of measles were reported to ECDC during the 12-month period - twelve of these in Romania and two in France. There were 127,350 cases of measles in Europe last year, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). This was double the amount reported in 2023 and the highest number since 1997. And UKHSA said that so far this year, outbreaks have been documented in France, Italy, Spain and Germany. The health watchdog said it was "concerned that more outbreaks may occur again on a larger scale this summer as families with unvaccinated children and adults travel to countries where there are outbreaks". "Measles is one of the most highly infectious diseases and spreads rapidly among those who are unvaccinated," it stressed. Since the start of the year, there have been 420 confirmed infections in England, 109 of these in April and 86 in May - though UKHSA said the figures for last month are likely to be an underestimate. Dr Vanessa Saliba, a consultant epidemiologist at UKHSA, issued a warning to Brits for the summer: "It's essential that everyone, particularly parents of young children, check all family members are up to date with 2 MMR doses, especially if you are travelling this summer for holidays or visiting family. "Measles cases are picking up again in England and outbreaks are happening in Europe and many countries with close links to the UK.
