‘Everest Man' breaks own record for climbing world's highest mountain
A 55-year-old Nepali man has broken his own world record for climbing Mount Everest, summiting Earth's highest mountain for the 31st time.
Kami Rita, a Sherpa climbing guide known as 'Everest Man', reached the mountain's 8,849-metre (29,032ft) peak on Tuesday, 31 years after first making the summit.
Officials said he reached the summit via the southeast ridge route, while acting as a guide to a 22-member Indian army team, accompanied by 27 other Sherpas.
'Massive congratulations to the legendary Kami Rita Sherpa on his 31st successful ascent of Everest, the highest number of ascents by anyone in history,' expedition organiser Seven Summit Treks said.
'Kami Rita Sherpa needs no introduction. He is not just a national climbing hero, but a global symbol of Everest itself,' it added. A director for the company said Kami Rita was making his way down to lower camps on Tuesday.
Kami Rita, the son of a Sherpa guide, first climbed Everest in 1994, and has made it to the summit nearly every year since, other than during years when authorities closed the mountain to climbers.Speaking to the AFP news agency in May 2024 after a previous record-breaking climb, Kami Rita said he was not especially motivated by setting records, and that he was 'just working'.
'I am glad for the record, but records are eventually broken,' he said.
'I am more happy that my climbs help Nepal be recognised in the world.'
The climber with the second highest number of Everest summits to their name is another Sherpa, Pasang Dawa, with 29. The pair have been in competition for who can make it to the top of Everest the most times.
Himal Gautam, director of the mountaineering and adventure section of Nepal's tourist ministry, told AFP Kami Rita's achievement had 'helped to take Nepal's mountaineering sector to the next height'.
More than 8,000 people have reached the peak of Mount Everest since it was first summited by Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953.

He said the ban would 'entail international responsibility for the US government', without elaborating. The US and Iran have had no formal diplomatic relations since 1980, following the Islamic Revolution. Despite decades of strained ties, the US remains home to the world's largest Iranian diaspora, with about 1.5 million Iranians living there as of 2020, according to Tehran's Foreign Ministry.

Indonesia have kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup for only the second time in their history with a nervy 1-0 win that has ended opponents China's hopes of qualifying. Oli Romeny scored the only goal of Thursday's game from the penalty spot in the first half of the Asian Football Confederation qualifier in Jarkarta. The spot kick was awarded after Yang Zexiang brought down Ricky Kambuaya on the stroke of half-time. It dealt a blow to the Chinese, whose defence was mounting pressure on the hosts, given the expectations on them. In the first kickoff of the day in the group, Australia took a giant stride towards sealing another qualification spot by beating already qualified Japan 1-0. Aziz Behich scored the winner with a curling effort from the edge of the box in the 90th minute. Saudi Arabia hosted Bahrain in the final kickoff of the day in Group C. Anything other than a win for the home side would guarantee Australia's progress while Bahrain needed a win themselves to retain a chance of climbing above Indonesia into the final playoff spot. Besides hosts Qatar, New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Chinese Taipei were part of the tournament with six teams competing in each category. Qatar men's team secured the championship with a thrilling 17-14 victory in the final over New Zealand, marking a remarkable journey through the tournament, having previously defeated Chinese Taipei (21-9) and Indonesia (21-14) in the initial round. The accomplishment took Qatar team's score to 520 points, achieved by winning the third and sixth rounds and finishing second in the first, second, and fourth rounds. This progress brings the team closer to qualifying for the World Championships, which are set to take place in Xiong'an, China, from September 17 to 21, while other continental qualifiers await the conclusion of their respective qualifying rounds. New Zealand secured second place in the sixth round after reaching the final by overcoming the Philippines (18-16) and Singapore (21-19). The Kiwis accumulated 560 points, having won the first, second, fourth, and fifth rounds, while finishing second in the third and sixth rounds.
