Scots prisoner cut inmate's throat during football game at Edinburgh jail

Daily Record09-05-2025

John Etchells, 31, slashed his victim in the neck when he was playing football at an exercise yard at Edinburgh's Saughton jail before telling prison officers: "I'll not be threatened by any rodent."
A violent prisoner who cut the throat of another inmate before making a phone call saying 'don't expect me home soon' was jailed for five and a half years today.
John Etchells, 31, slashed his victim in the neck when he was playing football at an exercise yard at Edinburgh's Saughton jail before telling prison officers: "I'll not be threatened by any rodent."

Etchells, who has a history of violence inside and outside the prison system, later said in a call: "I tried to kill the boy too, but didn't get it."

He is currently serving an Order for Lifelong Restriction and a judge ordered that his latest sentence should begin from May 6 in 2028 which is the earliest date he could apply for parole under the indeterminate sentence.
Etchells, who is currently in HMP Grampian, admitted attempting to murder Connor Steele (24) at the prison on June 1 last year after approaching him from behind and striking him on the neck with a knife to his severe injury,
permanent disfigurement and to the danger of his life. He also plead guilty to the unlawful possession of a knife.
Advocate depute Leanne Cross told Lord Stuart: "The accused has several pages of previous convictions, many of which involve serious violence."
His convictions include offences of attempted murder, serious assault and weapon possession.
She said that prior to the attack on Steele he was playing football in the yard and Etchells was standing at benches outside the yard.

The prosecutor said: "While the complainer was still playing football, the accused entered the exercise yard and approached the complainer from behind."
"The accused removed an item from his pocket. He then cut the complainer's throat from left to right before backing away towards the rear of the exercise yard," she said.
Steele was seen holding his neck and was shouting he had been slashed.
Officers saw his neck quickly become covered in blood. Help was immediately sought and one of the officers saw Etchells place what he believed was a knife down his trousers.
Etchells claimed that he had "chucked" the knife but then suggested he had hidden it internally. He later handed over a ceramic blade which was broken into pieces.
Prison officers applied pressure to the wound sustained by Steele and he was taken by ambulance to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he was found to have suffered significant blood loss and a cut from the middle of his neck to the right ear. A consultant said the injury posed a real danger to life due to blood loss but that was managed quickly and effectively by prison staff, ambulance personnel and accident and emergency staff.
Police investigating the attack seized a recording of a phone call made by Etchells in which he said: "Don't expect me home soon. I'm up for slaying somebody's throat again "

It is believed he may have been the intermediary between drug pushers in the UK and suppliers in Thailand and was described as having a "significant role". Emmanuel-Thomas, 34, has now been jailed after he pleaded guilty to fraudulent evasion of the prohibition on the importation of cannabis. Judge Alexander Mills told him: "It is through your own actions you will no longer be known as a professional footballer. " "You will be known as a criminal. A professional footballer who threw it all away." Chelmsford Crown Court heard the drugs were brought into the UK by Emmanuel-Thomas' girlfriend Yasmin Piotrowska. She had flown business class to Stanstead Airport with Rosie Rowland to carry put the plot on September 2. Emmanuel-Thomas was linked to the discovery by numerous WhatsApp messages, voice notes and pictures. The court was told it was "apparent" he had recruited the women, who were cleared after prosecutors offered no evidence in their case. He used his influenced as a professional footballer to sway the two women - offering them £2,500 plus a free holiday to Thailand. After Piotrowska was stopped by border officials, Emmanuel-Thomas messaged Rowland to tell her to "delete everything from our chat if you can". The footballer then travelled to Stratford, East London, on September 5 and replaced his mobile. He was sacked by Scottish club Greenock Morton following his arrest last year. Emmanuel-Thomas is a former England under-17 and under-19 international. He began his career at Arsenal before playing for various clubs - including Ipswich Town, Bristol City, QPR, Livingston and Aberdeen. The striker signed a six-month contract with Greenock Morton in July. David Philips, NCA senior investigating officer, said: "Organised crime groups make significant profits by trafficking and selling perceived high-quality cannabis legally grown in the US, Canada and Thailand illegally in the UK. "Organised criminals like Emmanuel-Thomas can be very persuasive and offer payment to couriers. But the risk of getting caught is very high and it simply isn't worth it." Emmanuel-Thomas is the latest Brit to be caught smuggling drugs. The Sun revealed how Cameron Bradford, 21, is being detained in Germany for allegedly hiding cannabis in her bags on a flight from Thailand. A British OnlyFans model was also caught allegedly smuggling nearly £200,000 worth of Thai cannabis into Spain. Elsewhere, Brit Bella May Culley, 18, sparked a massive international search operation in early May after she was reported missing while holidaying in Thailand. However, it was later revealed that the teen, from Billingham, County Durham, had been arrested 4,000 miles away on drug offences in Georgia. 6 The footballer was arrested last September Credit: Instagram 6 NCA officers found the drugs in two suitcases Credit: Unpixs

Foreign Office updates Greece travel advice that could mean a 'long jail sentence' if ignored

Travel guidance for the destination was updated on Wednesday, June 4. British tourists travelling to Greece this summer have been warned of the penalties for drug smuggling after the Foreign Office updated its travel guidance for the popular holiday hotspot. Greek travellers are being made aware of improved scanning technology which is now being used at several airports across the country ahead of the holiday season. The updated equipment increases the chance of tourists being caught if they are carrying illegal substances. ‌ Anyone found possessing illegal drugs risk facing long prison terms in brutal conditions with strict punishments. ‌ On June 4, the Foreign Office (FO) updated their travel guidance for Greece. They wrote: "Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties. You should expect a long jail sentence and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through airports. "Airports in Greece have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers." The updated guidance comes after an 18-year-old British teenager was arrested and accused of illegally purchasing, possessing and importing substantial amounts of narcotics, including cannabis. Bella May Culley, from Billingham in Teesside, is thought to have disappeared from Thailand, only to be apprehended at Tbilisi International Airport in Georgia, some 3,700 miles away, on these charges. According to reports, she was allegedly caught attempting to smuggle 14kg of cannabis into the country. ‌ The 18-year-old has been held there for 55 days as the prosecution continues its investigations. The BBC reports that this might be prolonged by another seven months. Charlotte May Lee, 21, from south London, is also accused of attempting to smuggle 101lbs (46kg) of the synthetic drug kush in her suitcase into Sri Lanka last month. The former flight attendant denies knowing there were drugs in her luggage and says she believes they were planted there. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The FO also advises tourists that the Greek police will arrest them if they are caught behaving rowdy or indecent, especially where excessive drinking is involved. Some fancy dress costumes may be regarded as offensive and therefore against decency laws. According to the FO website: "The courts are likely to impose a heavy fine or a prison sentence if they judge the behaviour to be illegal.
