China firmly supports free trade, says PBoC chief

China's central bank chief Pan Gongsheng said the country will firmly support free-trade rules and the multilateral trading system.
The remarks came as the People's Bank of China governor attended a meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors in Washington on Wednesday local time, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
Speaking at the event, Pan said unilateralism and protectionism "offer no way out" and are not in the interests of anyone.
He also said China will adhere to its opening-up process and promote inclusive economic globalisation while maintaining global economic and financial stability.
He called on countries to strengthen cooperation to prevent the global economy from degenerating into a situation in which "high frictions and low trust" prevail as economic fragmentation intensified, disrupting the global industrial and supply chains, triggering financial market turmoil and weakening the momentum of global growth.

China's most powerful destroyer can now strike beyond visual-range targets with pinpoint precision by linking to an airborne early warning system – the same technology used by the Pakistan Air Force in the recent Kashmir conflict – according to state broadcaster CCTV. On Sunday, CCTV confirmed for the first time that the Type 055 stealth guided-missile destroyer Lhasa could use data links to synchronise with People's Liberation Army's airborne early warning platforms, enabling it to conduct long-range anti-ship and air-defence strikes without relying solely on the ship's radars. 'We used data links to share battlefield awareness in real time with the early warning aircraft, significantly expanding our detection range,' Wang Mingwei, a senior sergeant on the Lhasa, told CCTV. 'It allows us to identify both air and sea threats far beyond visual range.' Song said the networked capability mirrored Pakistan's use of the same Chinese technology to shoot down Indian fighters near the disputed Kashmir region.

Chinese man invests in cattle online for profit, US$140,000 investment ends up as beef
Unsuspecting people in Shanghai who poured millions of yuan into a financing app were shocked to discover that the only form in which they could get a return on their investment was beef. Police in the city's Xuhui district revealed the case to the public recently, and it was reported by the state broadcaster CCTV. A four-member gang that collected 500 million yuan (US$70 million) for their dodgy cattle-raising project over the past eight years was arrested in November last year. The gang boasted that they operated cattle farms overseas and imported beef into China. One of the victims is a woman, surnamed Wu, who said she came to trust the app, the name of which is xuan min yang niu, which means 'all people raising cattle', after visiting their offline store in a high-end shopping area. Wu said the app offered her an annual return rate of 12 per cent. She invested a total of 100,000 yuan (US$14,000) in the project.
