Ultra-wealthy Indians are second to Saudis in buying luxury properties in Dubai: Report

New Delhi [India], May 21 (ANI): Super-rich Indians are second to Saudi High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI) in buying luxury properties in Dubai, according to a report by global property consultancy Knight Frank.
The report adds that British citizens are in third position after Indians in buying luxury properties in Dubai.
Saudi HNWIs have the highest average budget of USD 45.7 million, followed by those from India at USD 44.6 million and UK citizens with USD 30 million, as per the report.
Asian HNWIs have the lowest average budget among Knight Frank's survey respondents; however, this was still a very healthy USD 23 million.
Global real estate investors chose Dubai's Marina area (28 per cent) as their preferred location. Other locations such as Dubai Hills Estate (24 per cent) and Emirates Hills (23 per cent) were the second and third places chosen by wealthy buyers, as per the Knight Frank report.
Observing the trends, Shehzad Jamal, Partner - Strategy & Consultancy, MENA, said, 'For our wealthiest HNWI respondents (net worth > USD 50 million), Dubai Marina (43 per cent) commands the highest interest, demonstrating the enduring appeal of the long-standing poster child of Dubai's property market. For this group of super-rich buyers, Dubai Hills Estate (30 per cent) follows in second place, while Emirates Hills (22 per cent) rounds off the top three likely home purchase locations.'
The 2025 edition of the Destination Dubai report further added that Dubai's residential market experienced another strong year in 2024, with property values rising by 19.1 per cent to an average of United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED) 1,685 per square foot (psf), pushing prices to 13.3 per cent above the 2014 peak.
On average, villa sale prices grew by 19.6 per cent in the 12 months to the end of Q1, reaching AED 2,088 per sf, reflecting a 107.6 per cent uplift on Q1 2020.
This sustained growth illustrates the strong appeal of stand-alone villas, beachfront homes and branded residences that provide instant access to the Dubai lifestyle, the report added. (ANI)

New Delhi, May 31 (PTI) Edible oil industry bodies SEA and IVPA have hailed the government's decision to cut basic custom duty on crude oils to 10 per cent, saying the move will discourage imports of finished products and safeguard the interests of domestic refiners. On Friday, the government reduced the basic custom duty on crude palm oil, crude soyabean oil and crude sunflower oil to 10 per cent from earlier 20 per cent. The effective import duty (including basic custom duty and other charges) on these three products will now be 16.5 per cent, as against 27.5 per cent earlier. With a sharp rise in imports of refined palmolien in the past six months, both industry bodies have been urging the government to increase the duty difference between crude edible oils and refined edible oils. Welcoming the decision, Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA) President Sanjeev Asthana said, "the government's decision to increase the duty differential from 8.25 per cent to 19.25 per cent is a bold and timely move. It will discourage imports of refined palmolien and shift demand back to crude palm oil, thereby revitalizing the domestic refining sector." This move will not impact the overall volume of edible oil imports and is unlikely to cause any upward pressure on edible oil prices, he said. "On the contrary, the reduction in duty on crude oil will help reduce domestic prices, benefiting consumers," Asthana said. India imports more than 50 per cent of its domestic edible oil requirement. India imported 159.6 lakh tonnes of edible oils during the 2023-24 oil marketing year (November to October) valuing ₹ 1.32 lakh crore. The basic custom duty on refined oils remains unchanged at 32.5 per cent. At present, the effective duty on refined oils is 35.75 per cent. The Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association (IVPA) President Sudhakar Desai said, "We thank the government for accepting the IVPA recommendation to increase the duty differential between crude and refined edible oil to 19.25 per cent." It is a significantly bold move towards ensuring Make in India and also protecting the sector from influx of refined oils causing capacity injury to the vegetable oil sector, Desai said. "This is a win-win situation for vegetable oil refiners and consumers, as local prices will go down due to lower duty on crude oils," SEA Executive Director B V Mehta said. India imports palm oil from Malaysia and Indonesia. Soyabean oil comes from Brazil and Argentina. SEA pointed out that the previous import duty difference of 8.25 per cent between CPO (crude palm oil) and refined palmolien had inadvertently incentivized imports of the finished product over the crude form. As a result, during the oil year 2023-“24 (November-October), refined palmolien accounted for over 20 per cent of total palm oil imports, and in the first half of oil year 2024-25 (November 2024-April 2025), its share rose to nearly 27 per cent. On May 29, the C&F price of RBD palmolien was USD 45 per tonne lower than CPO, further encouraging refined imports at the cost of domestic value addition, the SEA added.

Naidu revealed that Gates had initially declined to meet him during a visit to New Delhi in the 1990s, when Naidu was serving as the Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh. At the time, Naidu had expressed interest in meeting the tech billionaire, but was informed that Gates was busy and 'didn't have any work with politicians." However, Naidu persisted. 'Then he (Gates) offered me to come and join the cocktail party. At that time, there was a stigma that if you go there, you are also at that party. So, I said no," Naidu told NDTV. Eventually, Gates agreed to a brief 10-minute meeting — but only after 'great difficulty," Naidu recalled. Determined to make the most of it, he prepared a detailed presentation over the course of a week. 'Everything I explained to him," he said, describing how he laid out India's strengths and future potential. Impressed by the presentation, Gates asked how he could contribute. To this, Naidu responded, 'Don't do anything for me. You believe in India, and also don't forget about Indians." Naidu also encouraged Gates to consider Hyderabad if Microsoft planned to set up a development centre outside Seattle — a suggestion that led to the establishment of Microsoft's first such facility outside the US in 1998. Although the meeting was scheduled for just 10 minutes, it was extended to 45 minutes. Naidu later travelled to Seattle to continue the discussion, which culminated in a joint press conference — and the beginning of a personal and professional bond. 'This is how things will happen dramatically sometimes. Now he has become a good friend. Recently, he came and we had a very good meeting," Naidu said. Now, the two are collaborating on a new initiative through the Gates Foundation, with plans to work across three sectors — health, agriculture, and education. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Naidu said the health project aims to bring services entirely online, enabling real-time monitoring with AI tools. 'That will be very interesting. Beginning June 4, the higher duties are expected to raise product costs for Indian manufacturers and exporters in the American market, potentially affecting their competitiveness. 'For India, the consequences are direct. In FY2025, India exported $4.56 billion worth of iron, steel, and aluminum products to the US,' said GTRI, as quoted by ANI. The US continues to be a key market for India's metal sector. In FY2025, exports included $587.5 million worth of iron and steel, $3.1 billion in iron or steel products, and $860 million in aluminium and related items. The GTRI report cautions that increased tariffs on these categories will challenge India's market share and profitability in the US. Trump on Friday announced plans to raise existing tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from 25 per cent to 50 per cent, citing national security concerns under Section 232 of the US Trade Expansion Act of 1962. The legislation enables the US president to impose trade restrictions if certain imports are found to pose a threat to national security. According to GTRI, the latest increase could drive US steel prices above $1,180 per tonne, with ripple effects on key sectors like automotive, construction, and manufacturing. India has filed a notification with the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding the tariff hike and is exploring additional response measures. GTRI also flagged the environmental implications of the US move. 'Steel and aluminium manufacturing are significant carbon emitters globally. While other nations invest in environmentally friendly production methods, the US policy lacks environmental considerations,' the think tank noted. 'This decision demonstrates the Trump administration's preference for economic nationalism over environmental stewardship,' GTRI said, adding that it raises questions about the US commitment to global climate goals and sustainable industrial development.
