Russia says Ukraine continues to strike energy infrastructure daily despite moratorium
MOSCOW, April 9 (Reuters) - Russia, the world's second biggest oil exporter, said on Wednesday that Ukraine continued to strike Russian energy infrastructure on a daily basis, in violation of a U.S.-brokered 30-day moratorium on strikes on energy infrastructure.
Ukraine and Russia agreed on March 18 to stop attacking each other's energy facilities, although President Vladimir Putin declined to endorse a full 30-day ceasefire that his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump had hoped would be a first step toward a permanent peace deal.
Russia and Ukraine have both accused each other of violating the pause on strikes since then.
Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for Russia's foreign ministry, said Ukraine was striking Russian energy installations on a daily basis.
"Contrary to its own statements about supporting the 30-day moratorium on striking energy facilities… the Kyiv regime continues to cynically carry out daily strikes on Russia's energy infrastructure," Zakharova said.
"The Russian side strictly adheres to the ban on attacks."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last week said Russia had launched a drone attack at a thermal power plant in the city of Kherson.
On NATO, Zakharova said members of the U.S.-led military alliance were planning radical defence spending increases in preparation for a possible conflict with Russia.
"The alliance still believes that our country is a long-term threat and will remain so even after the end of the Ukrainian conflict," Zakharova said. "The North Atlantic Alliance is openly throwing oil onto the fire of the conflict"

Republicans clobber Democrats in Congressional Baseball Game for fifth straight year
Republican lawmakers crushed their Democratic counterparts Wednesday at the annual Congressional Baseball Game in Washington, DC. The GOP's 13-2 win over the Dems in Nationals Park marks the fifth straight year Republicans have defeated their political rivals on the diamond. Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.), who was seriously injured in a ladder fall two years ago, pitched five innings for the GOP, striking out seven Democrats. 9 The Democratic team stood on the field during the national anthem at the annual Congressional baseball game. August Pfluger (R-Texas), who made a spectacular diving catch to end the first inning after Democrats loaded the bases. Pfluger's close play went viral on social media. 'Proud to have been selected MVP for this year's Congressional Baseball Game!' the Texas Republican wrote on X. 'Couldn't have asked for a better support team here in DC! Another huge win for Republicans.' German defence minister visits Ukraine for talks on weapons support
BERLIN (Reuters) -German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has arrived in Kyiv to discuss military support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, the DPA news agency reported on Thursday. Pistorius plans to hold talks with Ukrainian government representatives about further weapons aid from Berlin, according to the report. "We are doing everything we can to support Ukraine so that it can defend itself and get into a position where Russia is prepared to enter into serious negotiations," Pistorius said ahead of his departure. The German defence ministry was not immediately available for comment. Germany is Ukraine's second-biggest military backer after the United States, whose commitment to Kyiv has been called into question, putting pressure on Europe to step up. Russia and Ukraine met for peace talks in Istanbul earlier this month in a renewed push to settle the conflict, which began with Russia's invasion in February 2022. However, fighting has raged on while the two sides disagree over a number of central issues, such as territorial concessions and the prospect of Ukraine's future NATO membership. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who has already travelled to Kyiv and hosted President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Berlin since taking office in May, recently gave Ukraine the green light for "long range fire" with weapons supplied by Germany and others, angering Moscow.
