Kamal Haasan files Rajya Sabha nomination from Tamil Nadu, backed by DMK
NEW DELHI:
Makkal Needhi Maiam
(MNM) President and actor
Kamal Haasan
on Friday filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat in the presence of
DMK
president and chief minister MK Stalin, and deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin.
The event was attended by leaders from DMK allies including VCK's Thol Thirumavalavan, MDMK's Vaiko, and Tamil Nadu Congress chief Selvaperundagai.
The nomination comes after DMK allocated one Rajya Sabha seat to MNM, following the party's support for the DMK-led INDIA bloc during the recent Lok Sabha elections. Haasan's nomination fulfills the DMK's promise of a Rajya Sabha seat in return.
In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, a candidate needs at least 34 votes to secure a Rajya Sabha seat.
With 158 MLAs (DMK: 133, Congress: 17, VCK: 4, CPI: 2, CPM: 2), the INDIA bloc is poised to comfortably secure four of the six seats up for grabs. DMK has fielded three candidates: writer Salma, Advocate P Wilson, and SR Sivalingam.
Kamal Haasan launched MNM at a public meeting in Madurai in 2018. While the party did not contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, it had polled 2.62% votes in the 2021 state Assembly elections.
The actor's political milestone coincided with the release of his latest film 'Thug Life', which hit theatres earlier the same day.

Fans gathered in large numbers at cinema halls, waving banners and breaking into celebratory dances.
Haasan, visibly moved by the fan reception, said: 'It is true that working with him (Mani Ratnam) was a pleasure for me. I would like to thank Tamil Nadu and its people for their unwavering support.'
Directed by Mani Ratnam, Thug Life marks a highly anticipated reunion between the filmmaker and Haasan after nearly four decades. The film features an ensemble cast including Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Ali Fazal, Sanya Malhotra, and Rohit Saraf.

Frivolous applications: RPSC filed criminal cases against 14 candidates

1 2 Ajmer: The Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) Friday said that it has filed a criminal complaint against 14 candidates between Nov 2024 and Jan 2025 for filing frivolous applications for the post of assistant professor in Sanskrit college education exam. The commission filed the complaints at the additional chief magistrate of Ajmer under Section 217 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Jaswant Garasiya of Banswara is a Bachelor of Arts (BA), but he filed an application for the assistant director (Science and IT department) exam 2024, even though the essential qualification for this exam was a first-class degree in natural and agricultural science or a first-class Master's degree in engineering or technology, or a first-class MSc or MTech with a graduate degree in science and engineering, along with two years of specialised experience in IT and science technology organisation. Garasiya also filed an application for assistant testing officer and junior chemist exam of the RPSC. RPSC secretary Ramniwas Mehta said, "I spoke to the candidate on phone regarding the filing of the application, and he admitted that he is a BA pass, but he could not answer why he filed such applications." RPSC warned such candidates that if it is found that the candidate filed an application without the essential qualification and experience, then he will be barred from other exams. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 보증금 없는 신차장기렌트, 2년 타보고 결정하세요 전국최저가렌트리스센터 더 알아보기 Undo of the commission. To battle floods, Bengal govt to start Teesta dredging soon

1 2 3 Jalpaiguri: With the bed of the Teesta rising around two metres following the 2023 Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in Sikkim, Bengal govt has decided to dredge and desilt the river. The GLOF at North Sikkim's South Lhonak Lake in Oct 2023 had significantly impacted the Teesta riverbed with massive silt deposit. Experts fear that if the river is not desilted immediately, a heavy downpour in the upper catchment areas might spell doom for the areas the Teesta flows through. The rising river has already washed away two villages — Laltong and Chamakdangi — in Jalpaiguri's Rajganj block. At least 200 families from the two villages have been relocated to Kholachand Fapri. Bengal govt has decided to engage West Bengal Mineral Development and Trading Corporation Ltd (WBMDTCL) and the irrigation department to desilt some 30 spots on the Teesta from Sevoke railway bridge to Maynaguri's Bakali, across 50 km. "It would be a no-cost-effect dredging and the state will gain revenue by selling the sand and riverbed material," said irrigation minister Manas Bhunia in Jalpaiguri on Thursday after a meeting with departments concerned. A survey by the irrigation department estimates that it would cost about Rs 567 crore to desilt the Teesta if private agencies are involved. "Centre has not given a single penny since 2016 for desilting or bund repairing. This year, Centre has allocated only Rs 412 crore for the entire country's flood management. We, therefore, have decided to desilt Teesta on our own," Bhunia said. The minister also advocated for an India-Bhutan river commission. "There are 76 rivers originating from Bhutan which spell catastrophe for the Dooars every monsoon. They bring along dolomite, raising riverbeds by 4-5 feet. A joint river commission is the need of the hour but Centre is paying no heed to our appeals," he said.
