Muskogee cancels school for Tuesday
Muskogee Public Schools will be closed Tuesday, due to the threat of inclement weather.
All after-school activities and the Muskogee Board of Education meeting will be canceled Tuesday.
Hilldale Public Schools, Wagoner Public Schools and Fort Gibson Public Schools will have online or virtual learning Tuesday.
Activities at Muskogee Regional Junior Livestock Show will go on as planned Tuesday.
The National Weather Service has issued an extreme cold warning and a winter weather advisory starting early Tuesday.

Stock show resumes after delay
Fort Gibson 4-Her Aubree Hubbard hustled to control her spot barrow at Friday's Muskogee Regional Junior Livestock Show. Barrows, castrated male pigs, can have quite a temper compared to young female gilts, she said. She showed both. 'He has a lot more of a short temper, she has more patience,' Aubree said. 'He's real aggressive sometimes and she's like, chill.' Regional show exhibitors had a lot of work to do Friday. Sub-freezing temperatures and snow delayed the show three days. What would have been a two-day show separating barrows and gilts, was squeezed into one day. Gore FFA advisor Grant Brown said the past week has been 'hectic with the weather, like a roller coaster.' Students tried to keep their 13 pigs as warm as possible so they wouldn't get sick during the down time, he said. Brown said barrows are bred for meat market and production 'They're going to be stouter, more bigger headset, bigger legs,' he said. Gilts often are judged as breeding stock, he said. FFA and 4-H groups worked together to prepare and show their pigs. Brown and Gore 4-H member Gracie Bruce tended Taydem Perryman's pig while Taydem was showing another pig in a different class. First-year Fort Gibson exhibitor Easton Neves prepared a special mixture for his crossbreed gilt. Galen Connor of Coweta helped his son, Brantley, prepare his pig for the show, just like he helped Brantley at the sheep competition Monday. Connor said people worked together during the postponement. 'Everybody had to work together to make sure their water was still going and keep them full the past couple of days because it being cold burning off a lot of energy,' Connor said. 'With it being cold, we had to coordinate a lot of transportation to get here early this morning. It took an army working together working in these conditions.' He said postponing the show was a good decision. 'It was definitely safer for the kids,' he said. 'Plus the schools that had snow days couldn't drive vehicles, that was a big issue.' Cattle will be shown Sunday.

Bad weather prompts cancelations, postponements
Sub-freezing temperatures and forecasts for worse weather prompted cancellations and postponements throughout the Muskogee area. Temperatures plunged into the 20s and snow began falling before noon Tuesday. The National Weather Service declared a winter weather advisory through 3 p.m. Wednesday and an extreme cold warning until noon Thursday. Temperatures are to be in the teens through Thursday, according to the AccuWeather website for Muskogee. 'Wednesday and Thursday, it will be extremely dangerous cold weather,' said Deputy Muskogee County Emergency Management Director Carrie Wages. 'You won't be able to be outside for too long out there, especially with any exposed skin. You have to make sure your face is covered, you have proper outdoor wear. We just need everybody to watch their pets, check on their neighbors, keep your water trickling. We're expecting negative-degree weather with the wind chill.' Muskogee and Warner school districts canceled classes Tuesday. Other districts — including Fort Gibson, Okay, Hilldale, Wagoner, Checotah and Oktaha — had virtual classes Tuesday. Warming shelters are open at the Gospel Rescue Mission on Callahan Street and Kingdom Living Church at 24th street and Broadway. Deacon Warren Stephenson at Kingdom Living Church said the American Red Cross donated cots and blankets for the warming shelter. He said the shelter offers warm food and a clothing closet. 'This will be our third time this year,' Stephenson said. 'The Red Cross and many local organizations help us out.' Weather prompted the Muskogee Regional Junior Livestock Show to be postponed for at least two days, spokesman Rowdy Fewel said. 'For the sake of the animals and the people involved, we just made the decision to postpone it for the next 48 hours and see what we can do after that,' Fewel said. He said he does not know how this will affect the premium sale set for Saturday. 'This is uncharted waters,' he said. 'I do know there's been some weather delays over the years.' Fewel said that, even with the postponement, the show will comply with a Oklahoma Youth Expo administrative rule prohibiting swine shows after March 1. The ruling was made to help prevent the spread of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus. He said the remainder of the Muskogee show will happen within the next seven days. The show must be out of the Hatbox Event Center by Tuesday, he said. Muskogee Emergency Management Director Tyler Evans reported at least two weather-related accidents on U.S. 69 Tuesday morning. One was a turnover south of Border Street before 7 a.m. and the other turnover occurred around 9 a.m. near the Arkansas River Bridge. Muskogee Fire Department spokesman Scott Puckett said firefighters responded to a house fire on South Douglas Street early Tuesday morning. The fire remains under investigation, but could have been caused by a space heater, he said.

Revised Muskogee Regional Junior Livestock Show schedule released
Muskogee Regional Junior Livestock Show will resume Friday after it was postponed due to weather. Swine and cattle shows will be at Hatbox Event Center, 640 S. 40th St. Barrow show begins 9:30 a.m. Friday. Gilt show is 30 minutes after the barrow show ends. A hotdog feed will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Hatbox hangar. Heifer show will be 8:30 a.m. Sunday. Steer show is 30 minutes after the heifer show ends. The show will conclude March 1 at Muskogee Civic Center, 425 Boston St. Honoree recognition and dinner will be 3 p.m. Scholarship recipients will be honored at 4:30 p.m. The premium auction will be 5 p.m.
