Fans in uproar as Manny Pacquiao, 46, announces comeback to fight for world title… despite not winning in SIX YEARS

The Sun22-05-2025

MANNY PACQUIAO has announced he is coming out of retirement and walking straight into a world title shot - causing fan uproar.
The Filipino great took to social media to confirm a July 19 bout in Las Vegas against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios.

He posted: "I'm back. On July 19, I return to the ring to face WBC Welterweight Champion Mario Barrios at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
"Let's make history!"
Interestingly, neither Barrios nor Premier Boxing Champions - due to promote the fight - spoke out to confirm the bout.
But Pacquiao's post still caused havoc amongst fans with the boxing legend primed for a title shot after four years out and six without a win.
One said: "Legend, but nah don't do this."
Pacquiao's last win came in 2019, beating Keith Thurman.
He was then due to face Errol Spence Jr in August 2021 until an eye injury forced the Texan out, with Yordenis Ugas replacing him.

Ugas sprung a surprise upset on Pacquiao, who announced his retirement after the point loss to run for president in the Philippines.
But after a failed election, rumours of a boxing return began swirling for PacMan, who later faced Korean YouTuber DK Yoo in a 2022 exhibition.
Pacquiao then returned last July for another exhibition, against Japanese kickboxer Rukiya Anpo in Tokyo.
And the eight-division champ showed his age over the three rounds - with fans urging him never to fight again.
But talks were taking place behind the scenes for Pacquiao to make a professional comeback in a bid for the welterweight title.
Per WBC rules, a contender must be ranked within their top 15 in order to be eligible for a championship bout.
So it came as little surprise when Pacquiao sneaked back into the WBC's top five in mid May - despite his absence from the ring.
Boxing's oldest world champ of all time is Bernard Hopkins, who won a world title aged 49.

Who are the oldest active professional boxers today?

Boxing is a sport where youth is a valuable commodity. To keep your reactions and hand speed is an uphill climb as a fighter ages, which leads to fighters commonly retiring before the age of 40. But we are increasingly seeing fighters push the limits of how old a fighter can be and still be competitive. For example, Artur Beterbiev becoming the undisputed light-heavyweight champion at nearly 40, Manny Pacquiao returning to challenge for the WBC welterweight title at 46 or perhaps the most extreme example, Oliver McCall having his second fight of the year at 60 years old. In honour of McCall's incredible resurgence, being undefeated in three fights since 2024, here are the oldest active professional boxers. • Watch over 185 fights a year from the world's best promoters with a DAZN subscription. More information here. Firat Arslan Age: 54 Nationality: Germany Division: Cruiserweight Record: 56-9-3 (41 KOs) Arslan is a career cruiserweight based out of Germany, who made his professional debut in 1997, and has been active every year since, bar 2009, due to a life-threatening cycling injury. Arslan won his first version of a world title in 2008 when he converted his WBA Interim title into the Regular belt, beating Virgil Hill on points. He lost this title the next year to Guillermo Jones The German challenged unsuccessfully for full world titles three times, fighting Marco Huck twice for the WBO cruiserweight title and Yoan Pablo Hernandez for the IBF title between 2012 and 2014. Undeterred by falling short, Arslan continued to campaign and in 2020 earned himself a shot at Kevin Lerena's IBO cruiserweight title, but once again lost, getting knocked out in the sixth round. In 2023, aged 52, the German former champion fought Edin Puhalo in what was supposed to be his farewell, which he won via knockout. But Arslan couldn't be kept away and returned to the ring in 2024. Shannon Briggs Shannon Briggs is one of the heaviest hitters that the heavyweight division has ever seen, across 60 victories had a knockout ratio of 90 per cent and faced some of the best from his era. Briggs made his professional debut in 1992 and went undefeated in his first 25 fights before a defeat at the hands of Darrol Wilson in 1996. In 1997 in Atlantic City, Briggs has his first shot at a world title against Lennox Lewis, who outclassed the Brooklyn native and ended the fight in the fifth round with a technical knockout. After nearly ten years, Briggs would get another shot at a world title, against Siarhei Liakhovich in 2006. He secured the WBO belt with a twelfth-round knockout, having been behind on all three scorecards. His reign was short-lived, losing the title in his next fight against Sultan Ibragimov. There was one final chance at world title glory for Briggs, who faced Vitali Klitschko for the WBC title in 2010, but he was beaten on boxing ability over 12 rounds by one half of the Klitschko heavyweight dynasty. The former WBO champion retreated to small hall shows afterwards and retired in 2016. Briggs is now 53 and has not fought in nearly ten years but has recently announced he will be returning to the ring as a professional in July against an undecided opponent. Oliver McCall Oliver McCall holds the record as the oldest man to win a professional heavyweight fight, at 60. His career has lasted over 40 years, and he has been in 76 fights in that time. In such a long career, the Chicago-born fighter had the opportunity to share the ring with heavyweight greats such as James 'Buster' Douglas, Tony Tucker, Lennox Lewis and Larry Holmes. McCall debuted in 1985, with mixed results, losing five fights before challenging for his first world title against Lennox Lewis in 1994. In the defining moment of his career, McCall knocked out Lewis in the second round to claim the WBC title, defending once before losing it to Frank Bruno the next year. He would only compete for a world title once more in his career in a rematch with Lennox Lewis that saw him pulled out of the fight in the fifth round. The former WBC champion continued to fight until 2014 when he retired for the first time, only to return in 2018 and retire again in 2019. 2024 saw McCall return once again at 59, and since then, he has gone undefeated in three fights, with two wins and a draw.

'I'm grateful for every victory and every defeat both in the ring and in life,' the Ukrainian said in a video on Instagram Thursday morning. Lomachenko posted a professional record of 18-3 with 12 knockouts. He won a total of six major world championships while competing in the featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight divisions. Slicked-back Christian Bale bats away his Dark Knight image to play NFL great Al Davis in Madden biopic

Christian Bale was more cantankerous coach than caped crusader as he appeared on set this week for his latest film. The actor - famed for his roles in Batman and American Psycho - was seen shooting scenes for the NFL-themed biopic, Madden, in which he will play the late Oakland Raiders owner and manager Al Davis. For the shots, the 51-year-old Hollywood star had balding hair slicked back and wore a leather jacket and white T-shirt. The David O Russell movie boasts an all-star cast, with Nicolas Cage starring as John Madden, the Raiders coach and NFL broadcaster who gave his name to the Madden NFL video game. John Mulaney plays Trip Hawkins, the founder of Electronic Arts, while Sienna Miller plays Madden's wife. Al was the managing general partner, principal owner and de facto general manager of the Raiders for 39 years, from 1972 until his death in 2011. On Monday, Sienna and Kathryn Hahn were spotted for the first time in their elegant retro attire as they got into character. Sienna, 43, was particularly glammed up with voluminous blonde curls, beaded necklaces and a glimmering dress with a 60s-inspired print. Kathryn - who plays Virginia Madden - was outfitted in over-sized sunglasses, a chic pea coat and striped turtleneck. Sienna is playing Carol Davis, who was married to Oakland Raiders owner Al from 1954 until his death in 2011. While the Raiders are now in Las Vegas, the team has remained in the Davis family since Al died. Carol is now 95 and is part-owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, after inheriting the team from her spouse. Their only child, son Mark Davis, 70, also inherited the organization and is now owner. After the team officially moved to Sin City's Allegiant Stadium, Carol helped christen the venue by lighting the Al Davis Torch Memorial ahead of the Las Vegas Raider's inaugural game in 2020. 'There's only one person that can possibly light it, and she's agreed to do it, that's the first lady of the Raider Nation - my mom,' Mark told ESPN at the time. 'I get chills thinking about it. I get goosebumps thinking about it. Probably tears thinking about it. But there's nobody that could have lit it other than her. 'Because it's really a tough time in the country, but also here in Nevada, we don't want to seem that we're celebrating or anything of that nature. 'But to have my mom light that torch means so much, and I think it will mean a lot for everybody in this valley, so I'm excited.' Like the Davis couple, Virginia was married to John Madden from 1959 until his death in December 2021. They have two sons. In early 2022, Virginia returned to the RingCentral Coliseum in Oakland to pay tribute to her late husband at One More Monday Night in Oakland: A Celebration of John Madden. 'When John passed, I said, "I want to have a gathering at the coliseum," ' she said. 'I know he's up there and I know he's smiling down on all of his players that are here and all of you people, the fans that supported him for so many years.' A synopsis of the Madden film on IMDb reads: 'After being forced into retirement by the Oakland Raiders, fiery former NFL head coach John Madden teams up with a mild-mannered Harvard programmer to rewrite his fading legacy by building the world's first football video game.'
