Early Asians walked 20,000km from North Asia to South America, reshaped genetic landscape: NTU study

SINGAPORE - What does a modern-day Mongolian or a Siberian have in common with a Quechua from Peru, living almost 20,000km away?
They share a lot in their DNA, in fact, according to scientists from the Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) at Nanyang Technological University.
Early Asians walked more than 20,000km from North Asia to South America, making the Asian and the South American closely related as the journey shaped the genetic landscape in the Americas from as far back as 14,000 years ago.
Known as humanity's longest prehistoric migration, the journey would have taken multiple generations of humans thousands of years.
It started from Asia to Beringia, a land bridge connecting Siberia and Alaska during the Ice Age, and crossing into South America through the Isthmus of Panama and eventually settling in Patagonia in Chile.
This is the first time migration has been tracked via DNA. Understanding such migration patterns can help explain differences in immune systems, said Associate Professor Kim Hie Lim from NTU's Asian School of the Environment.
The findings were published on May 16 in Science, a peer-reviewed academic journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and one of the world's top academic publications.
Prof Kim's team collaborated with a medical doctor from Japan, who had travelled to South America to collect blood samples from indigenous groups around 40 years ago, she said.
'It was from those samples that we took the DNA and sequenced (it),' she added.
The DNA sequence data of 1,537 individuals from 139 diverse ethnic groups was then analysed to help identify genetic markers related to certain diseases.
'The long migration resulted in the decline of genetic diversity (of four groups),' Prof Kim said.
One group settled in the high mountainous areas of the Andes, another in the Amazonian jungle, a third in the desert area in Chaco and the fourth in the frigid areas of Patagonia.
'If there is such a small immune genetic diversity, you may have (less adaptability) against emerging infectious diseases... If a population does not have the diversity, it can be easily wiped out by certain pathogens, emerging pathogens or unexposed pathogens. Such populations cannot survive,' Prof Kim said.
She also highlighted the groups' genetic adaptation to extreme environments, pointing out how the genes of the people living in frigid areas adapted to their conditions with genetic variations related to the breakdown of fats and keeping warm. 'Once outside the region, they would fall sick because they could not metabolise fat properly,' she said.
Professor Stephan Schuster, scientific director of the GenomeAsia 100K consortium and senior author of the paper, said: '(It is) only after we know the entire genetic make-up of humanity that we can provide precision medicine that is specific to the needs of every ethnic group, in particular, those that have become endangered and are on the brink of going extinct.'
The study was supported by the GenomeAsia 100K consortium, a non-profit group collaborating to sequence and analyse 100,000 Asian individuals' genomes to help accelerate medical advances and precision medicine specific to the Asian population.
With Russia being part of North Asia, SCELSE senior research fellow Elena Gusareva said there was a large collection of genomes in Tomsk, one of the oldest cities in Siberia.
'Knowing that we are working for future generations, people in Tomsk were very interested and very keen to work on the research,' she added.
According to Prof Schuster, Asians make up more than 50 per cent of mankind, yet when it comes to big projects, Asian representation 'is only 2 per cent to 6 per cent of the total participants'.
'The GenomeAsia 100K study is like the equivalent of the Rosetta Stone for human population sequencing projects, uncovering an unprecedented genetic diversity that we did not know of when we started the project,' he said.
The Rosetta Stone is a large stone tablet discovered in Egypt in 1799 that allowed researchers to translate ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic writing for the first time.
Yet, in some instances, people are worried about whether it is ethical to carry out such a DNA sequencing project if, for example, DNA was taken without permission.
'We have very good and strong protocols in place, and we are operating under... an institutional review board that sets the rules to protect the participants and researchers undertaking the research. Despite what some activists believe – that these groups need to be protected – many of these ethnic groups want to be known and represented in a global project,' Prof Schuster said.
Apart from offering insights into how different populations respond to diseases and how their immune systems have evolved, the findings also help policymakers better protect and conserve native communities.

ST PHOTO: LIM YAOHUI Immune differences among Asians as striking as between men and women: A*Star-led study SINGAPORE – While it is widely accepted that men and women would have major biological differences on a molecular and cellular level, a landmark study led by A*Star has found similarly significant variations between different Asian ethnicities as well. For one, the immune-related blood markers among different ethnicities in Asia also have 'massive differences', said Dr Shyam Prabhakar, the senior author of the study. The landmark initiative comprehensively mapped out immune cells from five Asian countries, which could potentially lead to more accurate medical diagnosis and personalised treatments for Asians. The study was led by researchers from A*Star Genome Institute of Singapore (A*Star GIS), who worked with collaborators from South Korea, Japan, Thailand, and India. They analysed over 1.2 million immune cells from blood samples of 625 healthy donors across Singapore, Thailand, Korea, Japan and India. The resulting Asian Immune Diversity Atlas (Aida) was published in scientific journal Cell in March 2025, and is set to be presented at scientific conference 2025 Human Cell Atlas General Meeting held between June 9 to 11 at SingHealth Academy. Dr Prabhakar, associate director at A*Star GIS' Single Cell & Spatial Technologies, said biomedical research has typically focused on Europeans. This means that diagnostic approaches developed based on such data often do not translate accurately for other ethnicities, like Asians. He said it was 'really shocking' to discover that the difference in blood properties among different Asian ethnicities are as striking as the ones between men and women. 'It is well-established that you have to have men and women in your cohort (for drug trials) ... because we understand this biological difference,' said Dr Prabhaka. ' T he data is suggesting that the same applies to ethnicity. You cannot do your drug trial on one ethnicity and say that the results apply to al l .' An example is with an immune cell known as CD4+ T naive cells, which can be used to indicate inflammation in the body caused by the ageing process. Researchers found that age affects these cells differently in Chinese, Malay and Indian Singaporeans. This means that as people from these groups get older, their risk of inflammation-diseases may not be the same. Therefore, different screening strategies for different ethnic groups in Singapore will be necessary. Another example is blood tests that are used to detect if a person may have an infectious disease or a serious condition like leukaemia. These tests often measure the proportion of different white blood cells like lymphocytes and monocytes to diagnose patients. But researchers have found that healthy immune reference ranges for people in different countries, across ethnicities, can differ significantly. Dr Prabhakar said that while the Aida study established that there are biological differences between different ethnicities, further research will need to be done to determine how diagnostic criteria can be refined. Going forward, the A*Star researchers hope to comprehensively map out cells from other organs such as the skin, colon and the gastric system for Singapore. They will also be studying how different ethnicities in Singapore could have different susceptibilities to diabetes. It's hoped that with such insights, different cohorts of patients will have a better understanding of their disease risk. '(Knowing) disease risk is our best way of reducing healthcare costs, because if you know accurately who's at high risk, then you can prioritise the person and get them to come into the clinic more often. No fixed pathways to success as education system continues to evolve: Desmond Lee
SINGAPORE - Learning is not a race, and there are no fixed pathways to success, said Education Minister Desmond Lee, and Singapore's education system is evolving to reflect this. 'Explore your strengths and walk your own path,' Mr Lee said, speaking at the closing ceremony of the Pre-University Seminar 2025, held at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) on June 5. Addressing 552 students, he encouraged them to 'go back to basics' as they face a changing world, shaped by developments like artificial intelligence, and a more uncertain external environment arising from trade tariffs. He highlighted the recent actions by the United States administration to revoke Harvard University's ability to take in international students. 'This may have created confusion and anxiety, for those of you who may be interested in studying in the US.' One way to navigate this new world is to return to fundamentals - to use their five senses as a map, and their hearts as a moral compass, Mr Lee said. 'Even as the world changes, let your heartbeat guide you,' he said. 'Connect with others and always look out for one another as well as those who are more vulnerable.' He encouraged students to see the world with fresh perspectives and keep asking questions, while staying curious and connected to global developments. Take action too, he added , and be courageous in trying new things and facing failure. Listen to other people who are there to give support and help sharpen ideas, he said. And ultimately , 'smell the roses and enjoy the journey', he said. The closing ceremony on June 5 marked the end of the four-day seminar, attended by students from 30 pre-university institutions. These include junior colleges, polytechnics, and specialised independent schools. The event, with the 'Re-imagination' theme, was jointly organised by the Ministry of Education and Tampines Meridian Junior College. Students were tasked to come up with innovative solutions to Singapore's future challenges. Students took part in various workshops, panel discussions and learning journeys held from March to May. This also included a residential programme from June 2 to 5, where they got to stay in the NTU dorms. This is the 56th edition of the annual seminar. 'When we talk about re-imagining Singapore amidst all the uncertainties, we are not starting from scratch,' he said. 'We are continuing a DNA and mindset that has brought us from mudflut to metropolis, from trading port to a distinctive global city, even when our future was never guaranteed.' 'Our challenge now is to apply that same imagination and resolve to the issues of our generation and beyond.' Two students said that their main takeaway from the seminar was the importance of inclusivity and equal representation in Singapore's future. Nanyang Junior College student Liew Yan Hon, 17, said that Mr Lee's point about on being more open to individuals with different needs, an idea that aligned with his group's project on creating a more inclusive society. His project focused on creating equal employment opportunities for youths with mild intellectual disabilities, with the goal of making sure no one is left behind even as Singapore progresses. Mr Liew said his learning journeys to Rainbow Centre, a social service organisation that works with people with disabilities, and Project Dignity, a food court run by people with disabilities, helped to solidify his passion to help the marginalised in society. He added he hopes to explore volunteering and social work in the future. 'For our group, we want the future of Singapore to be less focused on being efficiency driven,' he said. 'Our main goal is to make an inclusive society, where we pull everyone up together at the same time.' River Valley High School student Cheng Yok Yong, 17, said he was struck by the analogy Mr Lee used about being guided by one's five senses and heart, and he hopes to carry into a future career in policymaking. 'I felt connected with what he said about leading with direction, with the heart,' he said. 'I feel that policy must be driven by passion, and with this direction, it will definitely help make Singapore a better place.' His project was on a one-stop healthcare tool to help patients and caregivers better manage their health needs. But the friendships forged were the most memorable part for him, Mr Cheng said. 'Listening to the different stories that they have is very insightful,' he said, adding how a group member with eczema shared his experience with the healthcare system in Singapore, which helped the team refine their solution . Mr Cheng said: 'This showed me why having equal representation in Singapore is important, because we need these people to shape our policies so we can make a better Singapore.' Southwest Pacific hit by unprecedented marine heat waves in 2024, UN says , World News
SINGAPORE — Unprecedented heat waves in the Southwest Pacific affected more than 10 per cent of the global ocean surface in 2024, damaging coral reefs and putting the region's last remaining tropical glacier at risk of extinction, the UN's weather body said on Thursday (June 5). Average 2024 temperatures in the region — which covers Australia and New Zealand as well as southeast Asian island states like Indonesia and the Philippines — were nearly half a degree Celsius higher than the 1991-2020 mean, the World Meteorological Organisation said in an annual report. "Much of the region saw at least severe marine heat wave conditions at some point during the course of 2024, particularly in areas near and south of the equator," said the WMO's Blair Trewin, one of the report's authors. Extreme heat over the year affected 40 million square kilometres of ocean, and new temperature highs were set in the Philippines and Australia, the report said. Ocean surface temperatures also broke records, while total ocean heat content was the second-highest annual average, behind 2022. An unprecedented number of cyclones, which experts have attributed to climate change, also caused havoc in the Philippines in October and November. Sea levels continue to rise more quickly than the global average, an urgent problem in a region where more than half the population live within 500 metres of the coast, the report added. The report also cited satellite data showing that the region's sole tropical glacier, located in Indonesia on the western part of the island of New Guinea, shrank by up to 50 per cent last year. "Unfortunately, if this rate of loss continues, this glacier could be gone by 2026 or shortly thereafter," said the WMO's Thea Turkington, another of the report's authors. [[nid:718492]]
