13-year-old ElliReese Niday wins 10-meter title at USA Diving national championships

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — ElliReese Niday became one of the youngest champions ever when she won the women's 10-meter title Thursday at the USA Diving national championships.
The 13-year-old from Moultrie, Georgia, scored 721.40 points to beat Texas sophomore Bayleigh Cranford by 10 points.
'It doesn't feel real,' Niday said. 'I just tried to stay focused on my own dives and celebrate after.'
She's the youngest American diver to win a senior national title in an individual event since 2016, when former Olympian Hailey Hernandez won a 3-meter title at the same age.
'It's really crazy,' Niday said. 'Maybe one day when I grow up, I'll make the Olympic team possibly.'
She led after the semifinals, when she had three dives score over 80 points. Her inward 2 1/2 pike earned perfect 10s from three judges at the meet in Auburn, Alabama. Semifinal scores carried over to the final.
On Thursday, Niday scored over 80 points on two of her five dives.
Niday finished fifth at last year's winter nationals. She's a seven-time junior national champion and won three gold medals at the 2023 Junior Pan American Championships.
Niday's mother, Lauryn McCalley Niday, was a standout diver at Tennessee and won national titles in 2000 and 2001 on 3-meter springboard.

Nike's Athlete Think Tank Aims To Shape Future Of Women's Sportswear

Nike Athlete Think Tank Cohort 4.0 Five years ago, Nike introduced a first-of-its-kind program called the Athlete Think Tank, which was designed to with one clear goal: to confront the challenges women face in sports. The Think Tank accomplishes this by convening and listening to elite women athletes, and then implementing their feedback to drive innovation for female athletes at all levels. To-date, Athlete Think Tank participants have included Serena Williams, Sabrina Ionescu, Faith Kipeygon, and Chloe Kim, and over the past five years, the program has served as a trusted space where athletes can help shape Nike's efforts to ensure all female athletes feel seen, heard, and supported. This year, Nike is doubling down on the belief that the future of sport will be shaped by women by kicking off Cohort 4.0 of the Athlete Think Tank, featuring top global athletes from across all sports. The list includes rising basketball star JuJu Watkins, Olympic medalist Sha'Carri Richardson, international soccer star Leah Williamson, basketball legend Sue Bird, plus many more. While their sports and backgrounds vary, these athletes share a collective goal of creating meaningful change by building a more equitable and inclusive future for women and girls in sport. For Sue Bird, a now retired athlete who has spent her post-playing career investing in women's sports through venture capital, entrepreneurship, and media, joining the Think Tank is highly personal. 'There's the old adage, 'leave it better than when you got there,' and I think a lot of us in women's sports feel that way,' said Bird. 'That's what makes the Think Tank so special.' From community grants to product design, the Think Tank is influencing everything from sportswear to systemic change. One of the most visible innovations born from the Think Tank is Nike Leakproof, which is a product developed in direct response to feedback from cohort athletes. And according to Bird, that kind of progress is only possible when women are given the platform to inform what's being built for them. 'We understand everything from the functionality of a product, to the design, to the fashion elements. We are constantly thinking about all of this, so who better to give feedback than the ones who are wearing it almost every single day?' Bird went on to share, 'By getting a woman's perspective on women's products, you're going to come out with something authentic and then I think more women can then trust it.' For Bird, the importance of brands like Nike investing in women's sports extends beyond just creating products: it's about rewriting a narrative that women athletes have fought against for decades. 'For years and years, we were told as WNBA players that nobody cared. That there was no value. I knew based on my own lived experience that was wrong,' she said. 'I knew it from walking around the streets and having people stop me and tell me how much I've inspired them. I knew it from playing in arenas that had tens of thousands of fans in them.' Bird also sees brand investment in women's sports as a smart, long-term business move. Nike's creation of Athlete Think Tank Cohort 4.0 is an example of a brand spotting the value of women's sports and leaning in. 'At the end of the day, this is just a really good business decision,' said Bird. As part of the Think Tank, Nike has also invested over $4.4 million in community organizations and plans to continue this commitment with the new cohort. The brand views the initiative not just as a product pipeline, but as part of the company's larger responsibility to serve women and girls in sport. Can the inexperienced Cristian Chivu's playing success translate to the dugout at Inter Milan?

Associated Press MILAN (AP) — Inter Milan appointed Cristian Chivu as coach on Monday despite his relative inexperience, and he will hope to be as successful as he was in his playing career with the Nerazzurri. The 44-year-old Romanian replaces Simone Inzaghi, who resigned last Tuesday and took charge of Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal the following day. 'FC Internazionale Milano is pleased to welcome Cristian Chivu as the new head coach of the first team,' the club said. 'The coach has signed a contract with Inter until 30 June 2027.' The appointment was announced by the Champions League runner-up just hours after Serie A rival Parma agreed to terminate Chivu's contract. Italian media reports that Chivu will earn 2.5 million euros ($2.9 million) a season. Al-Hilal lured Inzaghi with an offer of reportedly more than 20 million euros ($23 million) per season. Chivu has overseen only 13 matches in Serie A, securing safety with Parma after being given his first senior coaching position in February. Parma was in a dire position when it turned to Chivu, having lost four straight matches and sitting 18th in the 20-team league. Chivu swiftly turned things around and only lost three of his 13 matches in charge, recording impressive results against eventual champion Napoli, Juventus, Atalanta and Inter itself. He had spent the previous seven years in charge of various youth teams at Inter, where he ended his playing career in 2014. The former Romania defender was part of Inter's famous treble-winning team in 2010, lifting the Champions League, Serie A and Italian Cup trophies. He also helped the Nerazzurri to another two Serie A titles among the nine trophies amassed during his seven years at the club. Chivu will not have much time to settle, with Inter scheduled to fly to Los Angeles on Wednesday for the Club World Cup. It opens up against Monterrey on June 17 and also plays Urawa Red Diamonds and River Plate in the group stage. Inzaghi had spent four seasons at Inter. His final match in charge was the 5-0 rout by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final at the end of last month. The 49-year-old Inzaghi coached Inter to the Serie A title last year and was also in charge when the club lost the 2023 Champions League final to Manchester City. __ AP soccer: in this topic
