13-year-old ElliReese Niday wins 10-meter title at USA Diving national championships
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — ElliReese Niday became one of the youngest champions ever when she won the women's 10-meter title Thursday at the USA Diving national championships.
The 13-year-old from Moultrie, Georgia, scored 721.40 points to beat Texas sophomore Bayleigh Cranford by 10 points.
'It doesn't feel real,' Niday said. 'I just tried to stay focused on my own dives and celebrate after.'
She's the youngest American diver to win a senior national title in an individual event since 2016, when former Olympian Hailey Hernandez won a 3-meter title at the same age.
'It's really crazy,' Niday said. 'Maybe one day when I grow up, I'll make the Olympic team possibly.'
She led after the semifinals, when she had three dives score over 80 points. Her inward 2 1/2 pike earned perfect 10s from three judges at the meet in Auburn, Alabama. Semifinal scores carried over to the final.
On Thursday, Niday scored over 80 points on two of her five dives.
Niday finished fifth at last year's winter nationals. She's a seven-time junior national champion and won three gold medals at the 2023 Junior Pan American Championships.
Niday's mother, Lauryn McCalley Niday, was a standout diver at Tennessee and won national titles in 2000 and 2001 on 3-meter springboard.

Bird went on to share, 'By getting a woman's perspective on women's products, you're going to come out with something authentic and then I think more women can then trust it.' For Bird, the importance of brands like Nike investing in women's sports extends beyond just creating products: it's about rewriting a narrative that women athletes have fought against for decades. 'For years and years, we were told as WNBA players that nobody cared. That there was no value. I knew based on my own lived experience that was wrong,' she said. 'I knew it from walking around the streets and having people stop me and tell me how much I've inspired them. I knew it from playing in arenas that had tens of thousands of fans in them.' Bird also sees brand investment in women's sports as a smart, long-term business move. Nike's creation of Athlete Think Tank Cohort 4.0 is an example of a brand spotting the value of women's sports and leaning in. 'At the end of the day, this is just a really good business decision,' said Bird. Associated Press MILAN (AP) — Inter Milan appointed Cristian Chivu as coach on Monday despite his relative inexperience, and he will hope to be as successful as he was in his playing career with the Nerazzurri. The 44-year-old Romanian replaces Simone Inzaghi, who resigned last Tuesday and took charge of Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal the following day. 'FC Internazionale Milano is pleased to welcome Cristian Chivu as the new head coach of the first team,' the club said. 'The coach has signed a contract with Inter until 30 June 2027.' The appointment was announced by the Champions League runner-up just hours after Serie A rival Parma agreed to terminate Chivu's contract. Italian media reports that Chivu will earn 2.5 million euros ($2.9 million) a season. Al-Hilal lured Inzaghi with an offer of reportedly more than 20 million euros ($23 million) per season. Chivu has overseen only 13 matches in Serie A, securing safety with Parma after being given his first senior coaching position in February. Parma was in a dire position when it turned to Chivu, having lost four straight matches and sitting 18th in the 20-team league. Chivu swiftly turned things around and only lost three of his 13 matches in charge, recording impressive results against eventual champion Napoli, Juventus, Atalanta and Inter itself.
