Gavin Newsom sipped wine at Napa fundraiser while anti-ICE protesters plunged L.A. into chaos

New York Post4 hours ago

California Gov. Gavin Newsom threw on a pair of sunglasses and sipped wine at a ritzy party at his sun-drenched vineyard earlier this month – just as chaotic, anti-ICE protests kicked off in Los Angeles.
The luxe event dubbed 'Vineyard Vibes' was held at the Odette Estate Winery in Napa Valley to raise money for the PlumpJack Foundation, founded by Newsom's sister, on the afternoon of June 7.
One witness was appalled that the Democrat was casually enjoying a glass of vino in a V-neck T-shirt and baseball cap the day after his City of Angels started spiraling into violence, with rioters throwing concrete rocks at cops and vandalizing federal buildings.

'I couldn't believe it,' said the source, who photographed Newsom at the wine-tasting event.
'He was just walking around like this was an everyday occurrence.'
But more than 400 miles away, downtown Los Angeles was plunging into chaos – rioters were busted for tossing Molotov cocktails at law enforcement while vehicles were set on fire and scrawled with graffiti reading 'KILL ICE' and 'F–K ICE.'
The violence, spurred by raids on illegal immigrants by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, reached a point that President Trump called in the National Guard over objections from Newsom, who ripped into the Republican for inflaming the situation.
Newsom attended the wine fundraiser for at least 90 minutes, the source said — with Trump sending in the troops later that evening.

The event featured 'contemporary yet sophisticated' wines, live jazz music and local sources pizza and smash burgers.
'It's the perfect kick-off to summer fun,' promotional language stated.
'The fete will take place on the Winery Crushpad, where we'll gather for music, food, conversation, a delicious wine!'
A spokesperson for the governor's office made clear Newsom 'proudly attended' the annual fundraiser for the UCSF Cancer 'in honor of his mother who died of breast cancer' at age 55.

PlumpJack Foundation is focused on cancer prevention and education and combating the cycle of poverty, according to its website.
Newsom co-founded Odette Estate Winery with two other business partners more than a decade ago.
Newsom, a possible contender to run for president in 2028, has faced past criticism for being out of touch, including in November 2020 when he was caught attending a swanky dinner party for 12 even as he encouraged California residents not to socialize because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A photo snapped at the time showed him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, unmasked around the same time he pushed for state guidelines meant to suppress the spread of the disease.
4 A source indicated that Newsom was at the fundraiser for around 90 minutes before troops were later sent by President Trump across the city.

Newsom apologized for the shocking display of hypocrisy as he faced a firestorm.
'While the First Partner and I followed the restaurant's health protocols and took safety precautions, I should have modeled better behavior and not joined the dinner,' he said in a statement.
Newsom and Trump have been battling in court over the commander in chief's authority to control National Guard troops he sent to the liberal West Coast city.
Newsom claimed the deployment wasted resources and raised the temperature while Trump insisted he had to take the action to restore order.

Lazarus: John Pimental's HIWU Case 'Led To Some Positive Steps Forward'

Lazarus: John Pimental's HIWU Case 'Led To Some Positive Steps Forward' originally appeared on Paulick Report. Trainer John Pimental, now 70, resumed his career last December after a 15-month suspension from the Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit (HIWU), enforcement arm of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA). The trainer and his wife took time to talk about their experience with the Thoroughbred Daily News this week. Pimental was one of the earlier cases to come before HIWU; his trainee Golovkin tested positive for methamphetamine on May 29, 2023, less than a week after HIWU's Anti-Doping and Medication Control Program was implemented. A barn search on July 28, 2023, resulted in HIWU investigators finding an unlabeled container of the banned substance levothyroxine in Pimental's truck. Advertisement Initially, Pimental was handed a three-year suspension and $25,000 in fines, a deal the trainer said he agreed to because he couldn't afford a lawyer. Pimental had never had a positive test prior to this case, and told investigators he believed the meth positive to be a result of contamination, and that the levothyroxine was for his stable pony. After TDN published an initial story, Pimental was able to begin working with HISA's/HIWU's Ombudsman, Alan Foreman, at no cost. HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus then wrote in a Letter to the Editor published in TDN that Pimental's case had prompted the development of a "Pro Bono panel of lawyers for Covered Persons who fall below a certain income threshold so that no one is deprived of counsel simply because they cannot afford a lawyer." Ultimately, Pimental was allowed to withdraw his admission of guilt, and the adjudication process began anew. An arbitrator later sanctioned Pimental to a 15-month suspension and $10,000 fine for the levothyroxine possession, and the methamphetamine charge was stayed pending approval of proposed rules that HISA submitted to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in November 2023 regarding lesser penalties for human substances of abuse. HISA CEO, Lisa Lazarus, told TDN: 'We recognize that these are real people with real lives, and we don't take these decisions lightly. But I do think [the Pimentals'] case, amongst others, led to some positive steps forward, and obviously [their difficulties were] a consequence of being one of the first cases.' As the end of his suspension neared, Pimental wasn't sure he wanted to return to training. Encouragement from an owner helped him decide to return to the races, though he told TDN he is much more cautious since his return. "You've got to tiptoe around," the trainer said. "You've got to make sure nobody goes in your stalls. You've got to be careful with supplements. You have to be careful who you hire to walk a horse up for a race. I tie all my tongue-ties myself. I don't trust anybody else putting their hand's near a horse's mouth. I sit in front of a horse's stall all day now when he's running." According to Equibase, Pimental has saddled the winners of two races from 27 starters since his return to the training ranks. He is based this summer at Monmouth Park. LA Mayor Rips JD Vance for Calling Senator Padilla 'Jose': 'How Dare You'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Los Angeles Democratic Mayor Karen Bass ripped Vice President JD Vance on Friday after he referred to Democratic U.S. Senator Alex Padilla as "Jose." Newsweek reached out to the office of Bass for additional comment Friday night. Why It Matters Republican President Donald Trump has prioritized immigration control as a key pillar of his second administration. The president campaigned in 2024 on the promise of mass deportations and appointed Tom Homan as his administration's border czar to execute his agenda. Protests broke out this month in Los Angeles in reaction to numerous U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in the area. Trump sent National Guard troops and U.S. Marines to Los Angeles amid the strife, against the wishes of California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. The move was ultimately reversed by a judge, restoring Newsom's control over the state's Guard forces. What To Know Kristi Noem, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), scheduled a news conference in Los Angeles last week regarding the ongoing protests, and Padilla, a California Democrat, was in attendance. Video footage from the incident showed Padilla pushed to the ground and handcuffed outside the door while attempting to speak to Noem during the conference. Noem stopped speaking for a brief moment during the commotion, then immediately continued. The DHS said she met with Padilla for 15 minutes after the gathering. Vance on Friday landed in Los Angeles amid the Trump administration's ramped up ICE raids in the city. While speaking to reporters, he was asked a question in reference to Padilla's forced removal from Noem's briefing. "The New York Times just did a story" about lawmakers who "keep getting handcuffed, suggesting that ... the Trump administration is cracking down on Democrats," a reporter said. "Can you comment on that?" "Well, I was hoping Jose Padilla would be here to ask a question, but unfortunately, I guess he decided not to show up because there wasn't the theater," the vice president said. "And that's all it is. I think everybody realizes that's what this is." Bass afterward called out Vance, saying, "Mr. Vice President, how dare you disrespect our senator. You don't know his name," Bass questioned. "But yet you served with him before you were vice president and you continue to serve with him today, because the last time I checked, the vice president of the United States is the president of the U.S. Senate." Bass continued, "You serve with him today and how dare you disrespect him and call him 'Jose.' But I guess he just looked like anybody to you. Well, he's not just anybody to us. He is our senator." When asked about the incident, a Vance spokesperson previously told Newsweek that "He must have mixed up two people who have broken the law." Bass has been a stanch critic of the Trump administration amid the ICE raids throughout the City of Angels and vowed to stand in solidarity with immigrant communities in her city. The mayor has also called for peaceful protests and condemned any violence in reaction to immigration initiatives set in motion by the White House. She also set a curfew for a portion of downtown Los Angeles amid the ongoing unrest. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass speaks at a candlelight vigil on June 10 in Los Angeles. (Photo by) What People Are Saying Newsom on X, formerly Twitter, on Friday: "JD Vance served with Alex Padilla in the United States Senate. Calling him 'Jose Padilla' is not an accident." Padilla posted to X on Friday: "I asked a question—and ended up in handcuffs. If this is how the Trump administration treats a U.S. Senator in broad daylight, imagine what they're doing to immigrants behind closed doors. We cannot stay silent. We will not back down." California Democratic Senator Adam Schiff wrote on X Friday: "JD Vance served alongside Alex Padilla, and knows better. He's taking this cheap shot to distract from the real fear and havoc this Administration is creating. It's pathetic." What Happens Next It is believed that the Trump administration will continue executing his campaign promise of mass deportations throughout the country.

Small crowd confronts immigration agents at L.A. County shopping center

Federal immigration agents deployed smoke grenades on a small crowd while attempting to detain a man in a Los Angeles County shopping center on Friday. The confrontation between Homeland Security Investigations and the small group of bystanders happened in the Pico Rivera Towne Center. It's the same place where Customs and Border Patrol arrested a U.S. citizen for allegedly punching an agent attempting to detain a man on Tuesday. In the most recent immigration operation, witnesses said agents detained a man who had just walked out of the Starbucks with his coffee. A woman carrying a child and a man confronted the agents, who eventually used a smoke grenade after the man started yelling at the officers. A canister was left at the shopping center. "You could feel the overpowering smell in your eyes, throat and nose," a woman who works nearby said. Brianna Lemus showed up at the same shopping center with her friends when they heard the agents were there. The group surrounded one truck they believed was involved in the operation. "We jumped in the car and made quick signs on my trunk, just drove around honking, letting the whole neighborhood know they're here," Lemus said. The City of Pico Rivera said Immigration and Customs Enforcement vehicles were seen throughout the community, including the City Hall parking lot. City officials asked the agents to leave. Local leaders said the city and the L.A. County Sheriff's Department do not support nor participate in any federal immigration enforcement operations. A man who wanted to stay anonymous said federal agents detained his uncle at a nearby construction site hours after the confrontation in the Pico Rivera Towne Center. "They pulled him over," he said. "Detained him and took him away ... I see them put him in an ICE van." Construction site manager Luis Montoya took cell phone video of vans pulling away from the construction site after he witnessed agents handcuff a man and asked one of his workers for an ID. "They stood out here for a little while," Montoya said. "They wanted to come inside the property. I told them I was the person in charge here right now and that they didn't have my permission to come inside." More cell phone video shows agents talking to two men at a nearby Superior Grocers store, but it's unclear if they were detained. Some residents said agents are terrorizing their community and impacting their daily lives.
