CBC12-05-2025

A 24-year-old man is in custody after an incident in Arctic Bay, Nunavut that caused the RCMP to send out an alert warning residents of an active shooter on May 8.
The alert told residents to lock their doors, shelter in place, and stay away from windows.
Denis Lambe, the assistant criminal operations officer with the Nunavut RCMP, told CBC News the man fired several times in the community, injuring one person.
"That person was treated at the health centre in Arctic Bay for non-life threatening injuries," Lambe said.
No RCMP officers were injured, Lambe said, but all were flown out temporarily for respite. RCMP brought in relief officers from Iqaluit in the meantime.
Lambe said the entire incident lasted around 40 minutes.
He also said a member of the person's family helped with the arrest.
"In this case, family members did approach the male and disarmed him," Lambe said. "It did assist us, but we didn't ask the person to go and do that."
The person in custody now faces four charges, including two counts of attempted murder and two counts of discharging a firearm with intent, with other charges pending.

Malfunctioning brakes suspected in B.C. ferry truck crash that delayed Friday sailing

POWELL RIVER – Police in Powell River say a pickup truck hit a ramp on a BC Ferries vessel on Friday morning. Mounties say the truck's brakes were suspected to have malfunctioned when it hit the boat's galley ramp, with a photo showing the heavily damaged Dodge pickup wedged underneath. Powell River RCMP say the crash happened aboard the Malaspina Sky, which serves the Sunshine Coast. Police say the driver was a 66-year-old man who was issued a $552 ticket for improper brake performance under the Motor Vehicle Act. Mounties say the crash delayed several sailings as the truck had to be removed from the vessel. An inspection was also needed to 'ensure its structural integrity.' This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 8, 2025.

‘Tragic' boating collision under investigation in North Vancouver

First responders are seen at Cates Park in North Vancouver after a boat collision on Saturday, June 7. An investigation is underway into what first responders are calling a 'tragic accident' on the water near Cates Park in North Vancouver Saturday evening. B.C. Emergency Health Services confirmed one person was airlifted to hospital in serious condition after a boating incident at approximately 6:30 p.m. The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre told CTV News the crash involved two pleasure crafts. A coroner was on site along with police, firefighters, paramedics, the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, but authorities have not officially confirmed any deaths. 'Our thoughts are with the families and all of those affected,' the search and rescue group wrote on social media Sunday. Just before 8:30 p.m., the North Vancouver RCMP said it was responding to a 'serious boat collision' and the Cates Park boat launch was closed for police to investigate. Mounties are yet to provide an update. On social media, District of North Vancouver Mayor Mike Little asked anyone who witnessed the incident to call the RCMP's non-emergency line.
