Normal life affected as monsoon rains cause havoc in Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram: With the South West Monsoon rains coming down heavily all across Kerala, numerous places in the state were affected on Friday. The Indian Meteorological Department has announced a red alert in the three districts of Idukki, Kannur and Kasargod.
An orange alert has been announced in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad.
Meanwhile, low lying areas in Kottayam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta have seen flooding and many people from these areas have been moved to relief camps.
Speaking to IANS, State Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian said numerous people from his hometown in Chengannur are calling him and apprising him of the situation regarding rising waters.
'Am told by people in the know of things that if the rain waters do not come down, what was witnessed in 2018 might happen. The district authorities and the revenue department are on a high alert and are watching the situation. They have been asked to act if they feel the situation might turn worse,' said Cherian.
In 11 of the 14 districts in the state, all educational institutions have been given a holiday.
Since late on Thursday evening after the rains got heavy, numerous trees were uprooted and the worst affected were the railway tracks as the rising water threw train services out of gear.
All the trains in the state are presently running late, while a few local trains were cancelled on Friday.
Road traffic has also been thrown out of gear at numerous places following landslips and uprooting of trees.
Likewise following the gusty winds across the state, electricity at many places was disrupted and numerous places in the state capital city saw power outages on Thursday. However, on Friday morning the power supply was restored in many places.
Across the state power was disrupted in over five million homes on Thursday.
According to rough estimates prepared by the Kerala State Electricity Board due to the heavy rains and uprooting of trees they have suffered a loss of Rs 120 crore.
An 85-year-old lady who was returning home to Thirumaradi in Ernakulam district died after a tree fell on her during the storm.

IAF rescues 14 people stranded in swollen river on Assam-Arunachal border
Fourteen people, trapped in the swollen Bomjir river along the Assam-Arunachal border, were rescued by Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel on Sunday, officials said. A defence spokesman said that a critical humanitarian assistance and disaster relief mission was launched by the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Sunday in response to a request received from the Assam and Arunachal Pradesh state administrations. In all, 14 individuals stranded in the middle of the flooded Bomjir river in the Lower Dibang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh, cut off from main mainland, and all of them were safely rescued to a safe location. The operation was undertaken by a Mi-17 helicopter of the IAF, the spokesman said. Sadiya Revenue Circle Officer Jaydeep Rajak oversaw the operation. All the 14 people -- 13 from Assam's Tinsukia district and one from Arunachal Pradesh -- have been sent back home, the spokesman said. Officials of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh thanked the IAF for its timely intervention, ensuring the safe rescue of the stranded people. Meanwhile, the Arunachal Pradesh government has announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh each for the next of kin of those who died in landslide-related incidents across the state over the past 48 hours. Nine people – seven in East Kameng district and two in Lower Subansiri district– were killed on Friday night due to landslides triggered by torrential rain in the northeastern state since Thursday. Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed condolences over the deaths and said necessary assistance would be provided to the affected people through the respective district administrations. Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister and local MLA Mama Natung, and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also deeply condoled the deaths. Seven people, including two women and two children, lost their lives on Friday night in East Kameng district when a vehicle carrying members of two families was swept off the road by a huge landslide between the Bana-Seppa stretch of National Highway-13. In a separate incident in Lower Subansiri district, two workers were killed and two others rescued after a landslide hit a cabbage farm near the Pine Grove area along the Ziro-Kamle road.

Assam govt announces Rs 4 lakh aid for families of Guwahati landslide victims
GUWAHATI: The Assam government on Sunday announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to families of the five persons killed in landslides in the city in the last few days. Department of Housing and Urban Affairs (DoHUA) minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, announcing the financial aid, said there have been "logistical challenges" in tackling the waterlogging problem of Guwahati city and corrective steps are being taken. He was talking to reporters after chairing a review meeting with the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and other concerned departments to assess the ongoing relief measures and enhance preparedness for artificial flooding caused by incessant rainfall in Guwahati. The meeting focused on immediate response protocols, distribution of essential relief materials and streamlining coordination among departments to ensure timely assistance to flood-affected citizens. The city had witnessed massive waterlogging since the early hours of Friday due to heavy rains, with main localities still inundated. Landslides in the city and outskirts had claimed five lives during the period. Baruah said the meeting decided to grant an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the five victims. He said ensuring timely delivery of relief materials is a top priority for the department and items such as mosquito repellents, candles, sanitary napkins and baby food are being prioritised for quick distribution in areas hit by waterlogging and power outages. "Relief materials will now be pre-positioned in elevated spots across flood-prone zones so that they can reach affected families within 2 to 3 hours of flooding," he added.

People in low-lying and riverbank areas advised to stay alert: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma
GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Sarma Biswa on Sunday advised people in low-lying areas and riverbank areas to stay alert and follow local advisories. Meanwhile the Indian Air Force has launched Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief mission in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh after multiple people were left stranding in the middle of a flooded river in Arunachal. According to the Assam CM, multiple areas have witnessed rainfall of over 30 cm; with Silchar getting 42 cm of rains, Hailakandi 30 cm, and Karimganj 35 cm. "Assam already witnessing intense rain in Silchar (42 cm), Karimganj (35 cm), Hailakandi (30 cm) and in nearby areas. People in low-lying and riverbank areas are advised to stay alert and follow local advisories. Stay safe, stay prepared," CM Sarma posted on X. "Heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh -- Kibitoo (17 cm), Hayuliang (15 cm), Kalaktang (10 cm) -- may lead to a sharp rise in river levels downstream," his post added. Assam's Guwahati district has also witnessed multiple landslides in areas, with atleast 8 people dead in the last two days due to the weather. Earlier today, Assam Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah announced Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia to the next of the people who died due to the landslides. "We had a meeting to assess the ongoing flood situation in Assam. We are providing relief in many places. We have formed a team of volunteers to provide relief in all the affected areas. The Assam Government will give ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of five people who lost their lives due to landslides in Guwahati," the Assam minister told ANI. Notably, the IAF's disaster relief mission was launched on Sunday morning, in response to a request received from state Administrations of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The operation was undertaken by Mi-17 helicopter. Tripura too witnessed heavy to very heavy rainfall across multiple districts, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD). A red alert was issued for West Tripura and Khowai, with forecasts of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching up to 50 kmph.
