As tensions with India rise, Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif announced on Friday (May 9) during a Parliament session that madrassa (religious schools) students will serve as the country's second line of defence when needed. This statement followed India's retaliatory drone strikes on multiple locations in Pakistan the previous day.
'As far as Madrassas or Madrassa students are concerned, there's no doubt they are our second line of defence, the youngsters who are studying there. When the time comes, they will be used as needed 100 per cent,' Khawaja Asif said.

Asif's statement came after India's central government on Friday authorised the Chief of the Army Staff to call upon members of the Territorial Army as tensions with Pakistan rise.
Asif, known for making controversial remarks, also gave the lawmakers the reason why the Indian drone attack on Thursday was not thwarted by Pakistan forces, an argument that directly contradicted a previous claim made by the Pakistan Army that the projectiles fired by India were intercepted.
Asif said, 'The drone attack was mounted to detect our locations. It's a technical thing that I can't explain. We didn't intercept the drones, so that the location of our aerial defence units won't get leaked.'
India said Thursday it targeted air defence units of Pakistan across several cities, effectively inflicting severe damage and taking out an air defence system in Lahore.
According to reports, India used Israeli-developed Harpy kamikaze drones in these attacks.
Earlier on Thursday, the Pakistani Army claimed that they had shot down 25 Indian drones since Wednesday night.

However, a spokesperson for the army, Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudry, acknowledged that drone attacks in Rawalpindi, Lahore and an area near Karachi had resulted in a civilian casualty and an injury.
Since the beginning of the India-Pakistan conflict on May 7, Khawaja Asif has increasingly made global headlines for his controversial remarks.

New Delhi / London, June 5 (UNI) Chief Justice of India Justice B R Gavai inaugurated the third International Conference on 'Arbitrating Indo-UK Commercial Disputes: Synergizing India–UK Arbitration Practices' in London on Thursday. The high-level event, hosted by the Indian Council of Arbitration (ICA) during London International Disputes Week, brought together legal luminaries, judges, policymakers, and commercial dispute resolution experts from both nations to strengthen ties in arbitration and mediation. Delivering the inaugural address, CJI Gavai remarked, 'India and the United Kingdom share a rich history, bound by the tradition of arbitration and mediation rooted in our common law heritage.' The conference was also addressed by Union Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, Lord Michael Briggs, Judge of the UK Supreme Court, Justice Hima Kohli, Supreme Court of India, Vikram Doraiswami, High Commissioner of India to the UK, and eminent lawyers including Harish Salve KC and Geeta Luthra, Vice President of ICA. CJI Gavai reflected on India's arbitration journey, invoking Mahatma Gandhi's commitment to mediation as foundational. 'Disputes are inevitable. What defines a strong commercial relationship is our commitment to resolve them efficiently,' he stated. He emphasised India's progress through amendments to the Arbitration and Conciliation Act (notably 2019), the establishment of the Arbitration Council of India, and the 2024 Bill proposing emergency arbitration and appellate tribunals. He lauded the UK's 2025 reforms in its Arbitration Act, promoting summary disposal and legal clarity. Justice Gavai drew from key Indian rulings, including BALCO, Vijay Karia, Amazon versus Future Retail and Gayatri Balasamy, to emphasise judicial minimalism and finality in arbitration. He noted, 'When arbitral awards are upheld without unnecessary interference, it enhances predictability, business trust, and investor confidence.' The CJI praised the growth of Indian institutions like DIAC, MCIA, and IIAC, while commending LCIA's role as a global benchmark. He stressed the importance of collaboration between Indian and UK arbitration bodies to raise global standards. Justice Gavai applauded the adoption of Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) and hybrid systems such as Arb-Med-Arb. Finality of Arbitral Awards – Arbitration must be the final word, not an invitation for years of litigation. Mainstream Institutional Arbitration -- The Arbitration centres should be the norm, not an exception. Elimination of Delays -- Procedural fairness should not become a tool for tactical stalling. Diversity in Arbitrators -- The arbitrator pool must reflect varied perspectives and backgrounds for better outcomes. Israel 'prepared for action' as Greta Thunberg and more activists sail to Gaza
As climate activist Greta Thunberg sails to Gaza on an aid boat, Israel has stated it is "prepared to take action." A total of 12 activists, including Thunberg and Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham are onboard the Madleen ship to deliver aid and humanitarian assistance to Gaza Strip. Speaking to the Times of London, Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesman Brig General Effie Defrin stated that the Israeli military is "prepared to take action" to prevent the aid ship's arrival. "The navy operates day and night to protect Israel's maritime space and borders at sea. We have gained experience in recent years, and we will act accordingly," he told the publication. ALSO READ | UN chief calls for probe into deaths near Gaza aid site In response to the IDF's warning, the activists on board stated it 'strongly condemns Israel's declared intent to attack Madleen', by calling the aid carrying ship a "threat". 'Madleen carries humanitarian aid and international human rights defenders in direct challenge to Israel's illegal, decades-long blockade, and ongoing genocide in Gaza,' the statement added further as per AFP. The Madleen ship, launched by Freedom Flotilla Coalition, is expected to reach the Gaza Strip by June 7. The ship, named after Gaza's first and only fisherwoman, left Catania, Sicily, on June 1. Forensic Architecture uses a Garmin live tracker on board to continuously monitor the ship's location live. As of the latest update, the ship was 600km (375 miles) from Sicily as of June 4. The ship is reportedly carrying fruit juices, milk, rice, tinned food and protein bars to deliver to Gaza as the Palestinian territory plunges deeper into a humanitarian crisis.
