FPIs' investment in corporate bonds rises 11.4% in FY25: RBI report
Investments by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) in corporate bonds grew by 11.4 per cent in 2024–25, rising from ₹1.08 trillion in 2023–24 to ₹1.21 trillion in FY25, according to the Reserve Bank of India's Annual Report 2024–25.
However, utilisation of the approved investment limits declined slightly to 15.8 per cent as of end-March 2025, down from 16.2 per cent a year earlier, primarily due to an expansion in the absolute investment limits for FPIs, the report said.
Primary corporate bond issuances during the year rose by 16.1 per cent to ₹9.9 trillion, up from ₹8.6 trillion in 2023–24. Outstanding corporate bonds (as of end-December) also increased by 13.3 per cent, reaching ₹51.6 trillion compared to ₹45.5 trillion in the previous year, the report noted.
Additionally, primary issuances of listed corporate bonds on domestic stock exchanges increased in the year, along with higher mobilisation through overseas markets. Private placements continued to dominate as the preferred mode of issuance, accounting for 99.2 per cent of total funds raised in the domestic bond market.
The report highlighted that average daily turnover in the secondary market rose to ₹7,645 crore in 2024–25, up from ₹5,722 crore in the previous financial year. 'Average daily turnover in the secondary market on corporate bonds increased to ₹7,645 crore during 2024–25 from ₹5,722 crore during the previous year,' it stated.
Corporate bond yields declined in line with government securities (G-sec) yields, with the average yield on AAA-rated 3-year bonds falling by 15 basis points (bps) for public sector undertakings (PSUs), financial institutions (FIs), and banks; 28 bps for non-banking financial companies (NBFCs); and 33 bps for corporates as of March 2025 compared to March 2024. However, the spread between these corporate bond yields and G-sec yields of similar maturity widened, indicating that the drop in corporate bond yields lagged the decline in G-sec yields.
'Corporate bond yields softened during 2024–25, mirroring G-sec yields. The monthly average yield on AAA-rated 3-year bonds of PSUs, FIs and banks; NBFCs; and corporates fell by 15 bps, 28 bps and 33 bps, respectively, in March 2025 vis-à-vis March 2024,' the report added.

Procter & Gamble to cut 7,000 jobs to rein in costs as tariff uncertainity looms
Procter & Gamble said on Thursday it would cut 7,000 jobs, or about 6 per cent , of its total workforce over the next two years, as part of a new restructuring plan to counter uneven consumer demand and higher costs due to tariff uncertainty. The world's largest consumer goods company also plans to exit some product categories and brands in certain markets, executives said at a Deutsche Bank Consumer Conference in Paris, adding the program could likely include some divestitures without giving detail. The Pampers maker's two-year restructuring plan comes when consumer spending is expected to remain pressured this year, and global consumer goods makers including P&G and Unilever brace for a further hit to demand from even higher prices. "This is not a new approach, rather an intentional acceleration of the current win in the increasingly challenging environment in which we compete," executives said. President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs on trading partners have roiled global markets and led to fears of a recession in the U.S., the biggest market for P&G. The company imports raw ingredients, packaging materials and some finished products into the U.S. from China. Trump's trade war has cost companies more than USD 34 billion in lost sales and higher costs, a Reuters analysis showed, a toll that is expected to rise. In April, the Tide detergent maker said it would raise prices on some products and that it was prepared to pull every lever in its arsenal to mitigate the impact of tariffs. Pricing and cost cuts were the main levers, CFO Andre Schulten had said then. On Thursday, Schulten and P&G's operations head Shailesh Jejurikar acknowledged that the geopolitical environment was "unpredictable" and that consumers were facing "greater uncertainty." The company had about 108,000 employees as of June 30, 2024, and said the job cuts would account for roughly 15 per cent of its non-manufacturing workforce. P&G added that the restructuring plan would help simplify the organizational structure by "making roles broader" and "teams smaller". The plans to divest certain brands will also help adjust its supply chain in order to reduce costs, P&G said.

Procter & Gamble to cut 7,000 jobs globally over next 2 years
New Delhi: FMCG major Procter & Gamble on Thursday announced it would reduce 7,000 jobs, or about 15 per cent of its current non-manufacturing positions, globally over the next two years. The company said employee separations will be managed with support and respect, and 'in line with our principles and values and local laws'. 'Specific impacts by region or site are not available at this time. Plans will be implemented over the next two fiscal years, allowing us appropriately sequence the delivery of important innovation and operational projects,' said the company in a statement. It said that P&G's 2024 fiscal year completed six consecutive years of four per cent or better organic sales growth, delivering consistent growth pre-COVID, during the pandemic, across periods of supply chain disruption and inflation challenges and consumption slowdown in key markets. 'We're continuing our strong track record of cash return to shareowners. Over the first three quarters of fiscal year 2025, P&G has returned more than $13 billion dollars to shareowners through dividends and share repurchases,' said Andre Schulten, Chief Financial Officer, and Shailesh Jejurikar, Chief Operating Officer, at the 2025 Deutsche Bank Global Consumer Conference. They said that looking ahead, consumers face greater uncertainty. 'Competition is fierce. The geopolitical environment is unpredictable. And technology is rapidly transforming nearly every aspect of daily life. At the same time, we can unlock significant growth by better meeting the needs of currently unserved and under-served consumers, expanding into new segments, and growing markets to best-in-class levels,' according to the company. To achieve this, 'there will be additional changes to ensure an even more agile, empowered and accountable organization design — making roles broader, teams smaller, work more fulfilling and more efficient, including leveraging digitisation and automation,' it noted. In fiscal 2026, the company will begin a 2-year effort to accelerate P&G's growth and value creation. 'These changes across our portfolio, supply chain and organisation are designed to unlock significant opportunities for stronger delivery of P&G's integrated growth strategy,' it added.
