Pair's engagement proves a show-stopper for Gary Barlow

BBC News3 hours ago

A couple in the audience at a Gary Barlow concert experienced their Greatest Day so far, when the Take That star put his concert on pause as they got engaged.Chris Calpin and Kirsty Peake attended Barlow's show on Friday at Scarborough Open Air Theatre and were standing close to the stage as Ms Peake's favourite number, A Million Love Songs, started to play.As Mr Calpin popped the question and was met with cheers from the crowd, Barlow quickly realised what was going on and stopped the performance so he could dedicate his song to the couple.Ms Peake said: "The next morning we woke up and thought, 'did that actually happen?'"
Mr Calpin said the proposal had been in his mind for some months before the day of the show."It was planned since Christmas when I got her the ticket to go see Gary Barlow," he explained."She's waited nine years for it, so I thought I'd best pop the question."Ms Peake said she had always joked about wanting Barlow to attend her wedding to sing that particular ballad. "Obviously Chris was listening, because he waited for that song," she said.
Ms Peake explained she had been busy filming Barlow's performance when Mr Calpin tapped her on the shoulder and took her by surprise with his proposal. "There were a few choice words when I realised what was going on," she said. From videos taken by other concertgoers, Ms Peake said it was clear the crowd appeared to point at them and got the singer's attention."That's when he realises what is going on and stops the show," she said.Footage showed the singer walking over to the couple and asking Ms Peake if she had said yes to Mr Calpin's proposal.Barlow can be seen to say: "I want you guys to make a little space for yourselves and have a little dance, because this number is dedicated to you both. "Wishing you the best life together. Have a lovely future and thank you for being here tonight. Please dance this song away."
The newly-engaged pair said they did not tell any family or friends that night. However, they said they were recognised as they walked around Scarborough and the show-stopping proposal had since gone viral online. Ms Peake said: "After speaking to a few people, they said it was all over TikTok."It was on Gary's Instagram and Facebook - and it just went from there really."The couple said their first dance at the wedding would be to the same song, adding that Barlow might even get an invite to the festivities.

Cooking With The Stars series five full line up revealed as footballer, Love Islander and US nepo baby join

THE full line-up for Cooking With The Stars series five has been revealed - including a Love Island star and US nepo baby. The ITV show sees eight celebrities paired with a professional chef who acts as their mentor. 8 8 8 8 Among the celebrities taking part in the next series are Love Island legend Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, US reality star Jack Osbourne and ex-footballer Shaun Wright-Phillips. Also entering the kitchen are actress Natalie Cassidy, actor and comedian Hugh Dennis and presenter Jordan North. Former Towie star Jessica Wright and author/interiors expert Kelly Hoppen round out the line-up. The all-star cast will each be tasked with creating delicious dishes to be judged by the professionals. At the end of every episode, the bottom two celebs will fight for their spot - by cooking a dish without their mentor's guidance. The elimination is decided by blind testing - meaning a mentor could unknowingly vote their own protégé out. Series four ended with Paralympian and Strictly star Ellie Simmonds crowned as the winner - but who will join her? Emma Willis Cooking With The Stars. "Every year our celebrities throw themselves into it, and this new line-up is no exception. "It's always a mix of nerves, excitement, and a few inevitable kitchen catastrophes which makes for brilliant tele. "I can't wait for everyone to see what culinary delights (and disasters!) our new batch of stars cook up!' Tom Allen said: 'The sheer nerve of these celebrities to step into our kitchen and attempt culinary greatness (or just, you know, edible food) is truly something to behold! "I am absolutely delighted to once again join Emma to unleash another season of dazzling triumphs and utterly baffling disasters. "Get ready for a delicious, slightly burnt and completely fabulous ride – that golden frying pan is waiting.' Katie Rawcliffe, Director of Entertainment and Daytime Commissioning ITV, added: "We are delighted to bring 'Cooking With The Stars' back for another series. "The partnership with M&S continues to be a recipe for success, and this year viewers can expect even more surprising culinary transformations and laugh-out-loud moments as a fresh set of celebrities step into the kitchen to show what they can bring to the table." Melanie Leach, Chief Executive Officer at South Shore, commented: 'We're delighted to welcome this year's celebrity chefs to the show and look forward to watching them battle it out to become our Cooking With the Stars 2025 champion." Cooking With The Stars airs on ITV1 and streams on ITVX. 8 8 8

Glen Powell in action in Glasgow as city is transformed for shooting of new J.J. Abrams film

You could be forgiven for thinking you were seeing double. But the uncanny resemblance was a much-needed feature as Hollywood hunk Glen Powell was joined by his stunt double as they filmed a new sci-fi fantasy on the streets of Glasgow. The 36-year-old American was seen warming up for the scenes for Ghostwriter, a fantasy adventure currently being filmed in Scotland that also stars Samuel L Jackson. He was seen doing intense exercises in front of bemused cast and crew before his stunt double was spotted hanging off a bus as he pursued a girl. Powell was on set with director J.J. Abrams, who is behind films like Cloverfield and the more recent Star Wars films, with the city thought to be doubling up as a futuristic New York. Filming started in Glasgow on Saturday after other scenes were shot in London on April 26. Streets have been transformed to create the fictitious setting, including unusual signage, faux brick walls and a makeshift subway entrance all being spotted. As well as Powell and Jackson, the movie is due star Jenna Ortega - best known for playing Wednesday Adams in the Netflix TV show named after the character. Produced by Warner Bros, the film marks Abrams' first project since Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Powell will be familiar with the city, having filmed scenes in Glashgow for Edgar Wright's reboot of 1987 action flick The Running Man. Like the current filming, a number of sites in the city were used to emulate the streets of New York, with scenes shot across the city centre, the West End and the SEC Armadillo.

Iconic British Olympian in talks to join Strictly Come Dancing as BBC bid to clean up scandal-hit show

OLYMPICS running legend Sir Mo Farah is in talks to appear on this year's Strictly Come Dancing. BBC chiefs are courting his team in a bid to restore the scandal-hit show's family-friendly image, it is understood. 3 Its reputation was dented when actress Amanda Abbington accused her professional partner Giovanni Pernice of bullying in 2023. Team GB hero Sir Mo, 42, however, is seen by BBC bosses as a 'genuine national treasure' whose squeaky-clean image and profile would be popular with viewers and rebuild trust. A source said: 'His personality would provide the perfect tonic to the toxicity that's overshadowed Strictly. "Bosses would love to sign him up but the talks are at a very early stage.' Sir Mo won 5,000 and 10,000m golds at the London and Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2012 and 2016. He came fifth in I'm A Celebrity . . . in 2020 when it filmed in Wales because of Covid. Asked if he would consider Strictly, Somalia-born Sir Mo replied: 'Hopefully, when the time is right,' before joking he had 'two left feet'. He would not say if he had had an approach. A BBC spokeswoman declined to comment.
