Report: Jazz hosted predraft workout with potential first-round target
Former Texas guard Tre Johnson reportedly attended a workout with the Utah Jazz ahead of the 2025 NBA draft, according to Sarah Todd of the Deseret News.
Johnson was named the SEC Freshman of the Year last season, averaging 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 33 games on 39.7% shooting from 3-point range. He was the 10th player in program history to be honored as Freshman of the Year.
The 6-foot-5 standout is considered a potential top-five pick and a possible target of the Jazz with the fifth overall selection. He recently visited the Jazz, his first known workout.
University of Texas guard Tre Johnson went through a predraft workout with the Utah Jazz last week, according to league sources. Johnson, 19, is widely expected to be a top-5 pick, but could go as high at No. 3 in the June 25 draft.
Johnson scored in double figures in all but two games, becoming the sixth freshman in history to lead the SEC in scoring average. He finished with the highest scoring average by a Longhorns player since J'Covan Brown in the 2011-12 season (20.1).
The 19-year-old is highly touted because of his dynamic scoring ability and potential to pull up from all over the court. He dazzled on offense by creating for himself and hitting difficult shots on the move or with his patented step-backs and side-steps.
In addition to Johnson, the Jazz have also hosted workouts with projected first-rounders Nique Clifford (Colorado State), Drake Powell (North Carolina) and Jase Richardson (Michigan State). They hold pick Nos. 21, 43 and 53 in the draft on June 25-26 in Brooklyn, New York.

The Astros are rolling, but injuries are testing Houston's depth

HOUSTON — Still in a dirt-stained uniform, Jacob Melton trudged across an almost empty clubhouse on Friday night. He bore almost no weight on a sprained right ankle that dimmed the delight of his first big league extra-base hit — a perfect personification of the Houston Astros' predicament. A deluge of injuries is overshadowing Houston's most dominant stretch of the season. The club has opened a four-game lead in the American League West with a skeleton roster in desperate need of some reinforcements. Advertisement Yordan Alvarez's right hand fracture has crippled an already top-heavy lineup. Isaac Paredes' straining his left hamstring on Thursday night only furthered the problem. Friday brought a 'pretty good sprain' of Melton's ankle, forcing the Astros further into the most vulnerable piece of their organization. Position player depth is almost nonexistent, part of why Houston signed a slew of veterans to minor-league deals prior to spring training. One of them, Luis Guillorme, will be summoned from Triple-A Sugar Land before Saturday's game against the Minnesota Twins, two league sources told The Athletic on Friday night. Guillorme will likely take Melton's spot on the 26-man roster, though no final decision had been finalized as of Friday night. Postgame comments from manager Joe Espada all but confirmed a prolonged absence for Melton, the team's most touted position player prospect who chased home three runs during Houston's 10-3 mauling of Minnesota on Friday. 'It's a pretty good sprain,' Espada said. 'It doesn't look like he'll be playing for a couple days, but we're going to get some tests tomorrow and see where we go from there.' Melton could barely walk across Houston's clubhouse on Friday night without assistance. He leaned on a chair throughout a two-minute postgame interview that began not with his 111.3 mph triple but the explanation of another injury in a season full of them. First extra base hit for the rookie!#BuiltForThis — Houston Astros (@astros) June 14, 2025 A back injury impacted Melton throughout spring training before a groin issue cropped up at the beginning of his Triple-A season. On Friday, during his 11th major-league game, Melton turned toward the Crawford Boxes to track Willi Castro's solo home run. 'When I realized I wasn't going to have a play on it, tried to back off the wall and get turned around and get squared up with where I thought it was going to hit, I just rolled (my ankle) and landed on it a bit awkward,' Melton said. 'Not ideal by any stretch of the imagination, but I'll play the cards I'm dealt.' Advertisement Paredes' prognosis appears more favorable. Imaging revealed a 'small' strain of his hamstring, Paredes said through an interpreter. Espada called his third baseman 'day to day' and seemed optimistic he would avoid the injured list. 'I feel a lot better than yesterday,' Paredes said through an interpreter. 'I think every day is getting better. I think we're close to being 100 percent, being able to play every day, which is what I want to do.' Hamstring injuries are always fickle, so cautious optimism is prudent. That Paredes is so vital to Houston's success only reinforces the thought of being measured in bringing him back. Paredes has hit a team-leading 15 home runs, part of a standout season from a surefire American League All-Star candidate. Long coveted from afar and finally acquired this winter as part of the Kyle Tucker trade, Paredes has exceeded almost every expectation since his arrival. His 131 OPS+ and .378 on-base percentage trail only resurgent shortstop Jeremy Peña for the team lead. Mauricio Dubón replaced Paredes following his injury on Thursday and started at third base in his absence on Friday, but adding Guillorme to the active roster could spell more time in left field for the former American League utility Gold Glover. Dubón took over for Melton in left field on Friday following his injury. Guillorme is a far more sure-handed defender than Shay Whitcomb, the club's backup utility infielder who played the final four innings of Friday's game at third base. Guillorme bats left-handed, too, bringing more balance to a roster that will lose some if the left-handed hitting Melton hits the injured list. Gonzalez scores twice and 2 players are sent off as Gotham defeats Royals 3-0

Esther González scored twice and Gotham FC beat the Utah Royals 3-0 in the National Women's Soccer League on Friday night, finishing the game with nine players after getting two red cards late in the second half. Elsewhere in the NWSL, the San Diego Wave beat the Houston Dash 3-2; and the Orlando Pride beat Bay FC 1-0. Gotham's win snapped a four-game winless streak while the Royals (1-9-2) have failed to win any of their last seven games. Gotham (4-5-3) went up 1-0 on González's first goal in the ninth minute. Jaelin Howell made it 2-0 in first-half stoppage time with her first career goal in the NWSL. After Royals defender Nuria Rábano fouled González in the box, the Gotham scored a penalty kick to make it 3-0 in the 58th minute. González now has a league best nine goals this season. Jess Carter was shown a straight red card for pulling back Mina Tanaka and denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity in the 76th minute. Howell picked up a second yellow card for a late tackle on Claudia Zornoza in the 90th minute. Gotham goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger had to leave the game with an injury in the 88th minute. Ryan Campbell made her NWSL debut in Berger's place. Sanchez scores on return to Texas, Wave defeats Dash 3-2 Maria Sánchez scored against her former team and the San Diego Wave beat the Houston Dash 3-2 at Shell Energy Stadium. Sánchez was traded to the Wave in April 2024 having played for the Dash since January 2022. The Mexican international came off the bench at halftime and silenced the home fans when she scored a header to make it 3-0 in the 51st minute. San Diego had gone into halftime with a 2-0 lead on Kenza Dali's goal in the 17th minute and Adriana Leon's goal from close-range in the 36th. The Dash fought back in the second half when Barbara Olivieri made it 3-1 in the 61st minute with a powerfully struck a long-range effort. Yazmeen Ryan scored her first goal for the Dash to make it 3-2 in the 68th. The Wave (7-3-2) now have six wins in their last eight games while the Dash (3-7-2) are without a win in their last four games. Banda scores deflected winner as Pride beats Bay 1-0 Barbra Banda scored in the 58th minute and the Orlando Pride came away from PayPal Park with a 1-0 win over Bay FC. Carson Pickett took a quick free-kick on the left wing to catch the Bay defense off guard. Pickett's through ball found Banda free in space, who then dribbled into the box and fired off a shot that deflected off two defenders before nestling in the back of the net. Even after out-shooting the Pride 16-7 (6 to 4 on target), Bay could not generate enough late pressure to force an equalizer. The Pride (8-3-1) earned their fifth clean sheet of the season and have now won three consecutive games. Bay (4-5-3) has lost all three of its meetings with the Pride in the NWSL since joining the league in 2024. With Bay's starting goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz injured, smmie Allen made her NWSL debut. ___ AP soccer:

Twins' Royce Lewis suffers left hamstring strain late in another rout

As if the result weren't bad enough, Royce Lewis suffered an injury late in Friday's losing effort. Routed by their opponents for the fourth time in nine days, the Minnesota Twins suffered perhaps an even bigger loss when the young third baseman pulled up while running out a base hit late in a 10-3 defeat at the Houston Astros. After losses of 12 and 13 runs to the Texas Rangers earlier this week, the Twins dropped to 36-33. Advertisement Lewis exited Friday's game with a left hamstring strain after singling into the left-field corner in the ninth inning. He homered earlier and finished 2-for-4. 'We don't know a lot right now,' Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters in Houston. 'He does have a left hamstring strain of some kind. I can't tell you how severe at this time. He actually tested relatively well after the game upon examination in the training room. We're going to bring him in (Saturday) and check him out, see how he comes in. A lot of times, you learn a lot just by how the guy shows up the next day, how he can move around, what he's capable of doing. That'll tell us a lot.' The occurrence is the latest in a series of leg injuries for Lewis, who has twice torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Lewis missed the first 35 games of this season after suffering a left hamstring strain March 16. He also missed 58 games of the 2024 season with a right quad strain suffered when running the bases on Opening Day. After his return, Lewis missed 16 games because of a right adductor strain. Despite missing the final 10 games of the 2023 season with a hamstring strain, Lewis returned and starred in the playoffs, hitting four home runs in 22 at-bats, including two off Kevin Gausman in Game 1 of an American League wild-card victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. After a lengthy absence to start the 2025 season, Lewis struggled at the plate. But Friday's appearance was yet another sign Lewis was getting back on track. Since he was given a day off to work in the cage on June 2, Lewis was 11-for-28 with five doubles and a homer. He went hitless in his first 15 at-bats after returning on May 6. He also snapped an 0-for-32 stretch with a run-scoring double in a June 3 victory at the Athletics.
