DRI seizes leopard skins and bones, arrests one trafficker
New Delhi [India], June 18 (ANI): In a continued effort to combat wildlife crimes, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) executed an operation on June 16, successfully obstructing the trafficking of leopard parts.
Acting on credible intelligence, the two suspect persons were intercepted on a highway near Titajuri village on the outskirts of Nagaon, Assam, and two leopard skins and 20 bones of leopard (weighing 2.58 kgs) were recovered from their possession, according to a release.
During the chaotic situation, one of the suspects took advantage of the crowd and managed to escape into a nearby forest. The confiscated leopard skins and bones, along with the apprehended individual, were handed over to the Kathiatoli Forest Range for further action.
The leopard (Panthera Pardus) is listed in Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, providing the highest level of protection for endangered species. Hunting of leopards, and possession and trading of their parts are illegal. The leopard is also listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), thereby banning commercial trade of its parts.
The battle against poaching, hunting, smuggling, trafficking and illegal trade of protected species of animals and plants is an ongoing effort of the law enforcement agencies.
Besides the present seizure, since January 2025, DRI and Customs in the North Eastern Region have also seized one tiger skin and tiger bones weighing 14 kilograms, two elephant tusks, three kilograms of ambergris (vomit of sperm whale), four leopard skins, two otter skins, one skin of bear head, two kilograms of pangolin scales and eight kilograms of leopard bones. These animals are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, making their hunting prohibited and trading and possession of their parts also prohibited. (ANI)

Delhi: LG accords sanction to prosecute two police officials in embezzlement case
New Delhi [India], June 18 (ANI): Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has accorded sanction to prosecute two Delhi Police officials in connection with an embezzlement case, according to a statement on Wednesday. Saxena has granted approval under Section 197 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (Cr. PC), 1973, to initiate prosecution against Head Constable (Exe.) Rakesh Sharma and Constable (Exe.) Khushi Ram of the Delhi Police. The policemen -- a head constable and a constable -- were booked by Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing in 2018 for committing embezzlement, forgery, among other offences under various provisions of the IPC and the Information Technology Act, the statement said. Furthermore, the possibility of disciplinary action against the concerned police officials is also under consideration, pending the outcome of the prosecution. According to the release, the case, registered on May 14, 2018, under Sections 409, 420, 467, 468, 471, 201, and 120-B of the IPC, along with Section 66 of the IT Act-2000, stems from an internal inquiry within the Licensing Unit of the Delhi Police. The inquiry revealed discrepancies in the deposit of fees related to the issuance and renewal of licenses of CPL, Hotels/Guest Houses, Eating Houses and Press, including arms licenses. Investigations revealed that instead of issuing system-generated receipts, cash was collected through fraudulently generated fake receipts. These transactions were not accounted for in the government records, leading to the misappropriation of funds and a loss to the government exchequer. It was also found that some files were deleted from computers, and related documents were missing. The alleged embezzlement occurred between September 1, 2016, and February 20, 2018, the statement said. The investigation further indicated that forged fee receipts were predominantly issued at Arms License Renewal Counter No. 2, manned by Head Constable Rakesh Sharma during the period of March 2017 to February 2018, despite the presence of other renewal counters. This pointed to a potential collusion between the Dealing Assistant and the Cashier, Ct. Khushi Ram. Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) reports and the charge sheet filed by the EOW have concluded that there is sufficient evidence against Head Constable (HC) Rakesh Sharma and Constable Khushi Ram. The Home Department, GNCTD, after reviewing the case, submitted that the investigation revealed a conspiracy between the Cashier, Ct. Khushi Ram, and the Dealing Assistant, HC Rakesh Sharma, to issue forged fee receipts for arms license renewals. They allegedly created a fake receipt format, bypassing the official cash application software, and printed receipts using the same printer as genuine receipts. While according sanction under Section 197 Cr. PC, the LG has also directed the Home Department to re-examine the request of Delhi Police for the grant of sanction under Section 140 of the Delhi Police Act, 1978. (ANI)

NIA arrests 4 more accused in TN radicalisation and recruitment case
New Delhi [India], June 18 (ANI): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested four more accused in the Tamil Nadu radicalisation and recruitment case, an offshoot of the Coimbatore car bomb blast case, according to an official statement. The NIA has arrested a total of eight people in this case so far. As per the release, the accused persons identified as Ahmed Ali, Jawahar Sathik, Raja Abdullah aka MAC Raja, and Sheik Dawood the four accused had been radicalised by Jameel Basha, the founder of Madras Arabic College, who, along with his associates, was involved in recruiting gullible youth and subtly infused Salafi-Jihadi ideology to them in the guise of imparting Arabic language classes in Tamil Nadu. NIA had earlier arrested and charged Jameel Basha and his associates Irshath, Syed Abdur Rahman and Mohammed Hussain, who were using the classrooms and social platform to carry out their anti-national radicalisation and recruitment activities. NIA investigations have revealed that the accused had promoted Khilafat ideology and martyrdom through jihad, advocating violence and armed struggle to establish an Islamic state after removing the democratically elected government. The radicalisation and recruitment activities had led to the Coimbatore car bomb blast in October 2022, in which the suicide bomber Jamesha Mubeen carried out a vehicle-borne IED attack in front of an ancient temple in Coimbatore. NIA is continuing with its investigation in the TN ISIS Radicalisation and Recruitment Case, as part of its efforts to check radical terror activities against the nation. (ANI)

Telangana: Hyderabad police conducts special drive against drunk driving by school bus drivers
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], June 18 (ANI): In a bid to ensure the safety of school children, the West and North Zone Traffic Police conducted a special drive against drunk driving by school bus drivers on June 18. The drive was carried out at 34 locations across prominent areas, including Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Panjagutta, Begumpet, SR Nagar, and others, a release said. During the operation, a total of 324 school buses were checked, and five school bus drivers were found driving under the influence of alcohol. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic-I, Rahul Hegde, emphasized the importance of adhering to the guidelines set by the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India for transporting school children. According to police official,' Today ie on 18th June, West and North Zone Traffic Police, conducted Special drive for Drunk Driving by school bus drivers at 34 locations covering Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Panjagutta, Begumpet, SR Nagar, Marredpally, Bowenpally , Trimulgherry, Mahankali, Gopalpuram areas. During this special drive, total 324 school buses have been checked, among them five school bus drivers were found driving under the influence of alcohol. Rahul Hegde, BK IPS., has emphasized that School managements should be aware on the guidelines of the Supreme court issued in W.P.
