FC Porto, Al Ahly battle to 4-4 draw, end their runs at Club World Cup
Pepe fired in the 89th-minute equalizer for FC Porto to cap a wild 4-4 draw with Al Ahly in a Club World Cup match Monday in East Rutherford, N.J.
Wessam Abou Ali recorded a hat trick for Al Ahly and Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane backed up his teammate by scoring the Egyptian club's fourth goal of the night.
But FC Porto went punch for punch and drew level four separate times. With time dripping away, Pepe received a pass from Gabri Veiga and uncorked a right-footed shot from above the penalty arc that got past Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.
Rodrigo Mora, William Gomes and Samu Aghehowa scored for FC Porto, and Claudio Ramos made six saves while dealing with Al Ahly's 12 shots on target.
The entertaining contest turned out to be the last of the tournament for both teams. Palmeiras rallied to a 2-2 tie with Inter Miami for both sides to finish Group A play with five points.
FC Porto (0-1-2, 2 points) and Al Ahly (0-1-2, 2 points) will head home without a victory in the tournament; Al Ahly will land in last place in the group based on goal differential.
Abou Ali opened his high-scoring night by rolling in a sharp-angle shot from the left of the 6-yard box, knocking it in off the post.
He gave Al Ahly a 2-1 halftime lead by depositing the spot kick into the bottom left corner of the goal. And just one minute after Gomes tied the match, Abou Ali scored his third goal on a header off Mohamed Hany's cross.
Aghehowa did not wait long to make it 3-3 on a header of his own, as he leapt and powered one in on a corner kick by Fabio Vieira.
Ben Romdhane broke through in the 64th with a right-footed blast from the top of the 18-yard box, assisted by Achraf Bencharki.

Atletico Madrid's Club World Cup exit sparks self-reflection
FOR all the excuses -- and there have been many -- one line from Antoine Griezmann cut straight to the heart of the matter after Atletico Madrid's Club World Cup elimination. 'We have to look at ourselves and see that there are times when we are not at the level and we have to resolve that,' said the veteran French forward. Griezmann's goal earned Atletico a 1-0 win over Botafogo on Monday but the Brazilian side progressed ahead of the Spaniards on goal difference to reach the Club World Cup last 16. Atletico were left licking their wounds, just like they were after failing to win a major trophy this season. Their controversial Champions League last 16 elimination by Real Madrid after Julian Alvarez's 'double-touch' penalty left Atletico raging at referees, UEFA and their arch-rivals. They spiralled and blamed that for their capitulation in La Liga, which they led at Christmas, while Simeone insisted a Copa del Rey semi-final defeat by Barcelona was something the club had to accept. 'We are trying to keep improving to get closer and closer to the teams above us and to accept the place we are,' said the Argentine coach. However Atletico, who won La Liga in 2014 and 2021, and finished runners-up in the 2014 and 2016 Champions League final, have been far closer to the elite than they are right now. Some players at the club understand that, like Griezmann and goalkeeper Jan Oblak, while others do not seem to. 'We'll keep rattling the cages of those at the top,' pledged Marcos Llorente after the group stage elimination in the United States. Atletico were upset that some penalty appeals were ignored during the win over Botafogo in Pasadena. 'I've never seen anything like it, to be honest, I think we should have been awarded two penalties,' complained winger Giuliano Simeone, the coach's son. 'I think the decisions are not favouring us at all -- in all the debatable ones, we have to play against that.' - 'It takes work' - It was Atletico's opening 4-0 thrashing by Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain that cost them qualification and also showed how far they are from the game's peak. Simeone has been in charge since 2011 and many would say he is the greatest coach in the club's history, but in recent years questions have grown around whether he is the man to drive Atletico further. The last trophy they won was La Liga four years ago. 'I'm sad to be eliminated, we got six points from three games. We won two,' said Simeone. As has so often proven the case in recent years, it was not enough. In some quarters of the Spanish media, former Rojiblanco defender Filipe Luis, coach of Brazilian side Flamengo -- who have made it through to the last 16 -- has been linked as a future Atletico coach. 'They've had a long season... let's hope the next one is better for them,' said retired Atletico great Sergio Aguero, but with the team not progressing, some fans are losing their hope. Griezmann, who signed a new contract with Atletico at the start of the summer and ended a 18-game goal drought against Botafogo, believes it will take elbow grease. 'It takes work, and it's a problem deeper and more to do within the team than the referees,' he added, as Atletico packed their bags for home. 'We have to focus on what we have to improve, on what we have to do to win these games.'

Messi to face PSG as Inter Miami reach Club World Cup last 16
LIONEL Messi faces a reunion with his former club Paris Saint-Germain after his Inter Miami side reached the last 16 of the Club World Cup with a 2-2 draw with Palmeiras. The Brazilian side fought back from two goals down to draw at Hard Rock Stadium, a result which secured both teams a place in the knock-out stages. Goals from Tadeo Allende and Luis Suarez had Miami on course for a second surprise victory in the tournament after their win over Porto. But the Brazilian side struck twice in the last 10 minutes through Paulinho and Mauricio to make sure of their place in the next round. Few expected Miami to make it out of the group but they now face the European champions while Palmeiras will have an all-Brazilian encounter with Botafogo. For Messi, who celebrates his 38th birthday on Tuesday, the tie in Atlanta will see him face his former club PSG for the first time since leaving them to join Miami in 2023. 'It's a historic night for the MLS because we are into the best 16 teams in the world and all the MLS have to be proud of Inter Miami,' said Miami coach Javier Mascherano. The result meant that Egyptian club Al Ahly and Porto were both eliminated despite producing a highly entertaining 4-4 draw at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. There were six Argentines in the Miami starting line-up which took the field in front of a large Brazilian contingent in the 60,914 crowd. The travelling fans were on their feet in the opening minutes when Gustavo Gomez powered a header goalwards from a corner but Oscar Ustari was down well to save. Miami grabbed the lead in the 16th minute when Suarez brilliantly chested a long ball into the path of the on-rushing Allende who showed pace to break clear of the Brazilian defence and then composure to fire past Weverton. - 'Great game' - Palmeiras's tactics of sitting off Miami were not working with Messi dropping deep and linking up with Sergio Busquets and Federico Redondo as the Major League Soccer side enjoyed plenty of possession. The only chance for Palmeiras before the break came when Facundo Torres found himself in a promising position after some sloppy Miami defending but he screwed his shot wide. Messi's first real effort on goal came four minutes after the restart when he eked out just enough room on the edge of the box for a low shot but Weverton was down well. Allende threatened again when he broke down the right and flashed a shot just wide of the post and Messi drove a bouncing ball narrowly over the bar as Miami pushed for a second goal. That came in the 65th minute with the 38-year-old former Barcelona striker Suarez rolling back the years as he dribbled past two defenders and then blasted into the top corner. Top spot in the group mattered to Miami as it would have avoided the clash with PSG but it was not to be as Palmeiras earned themselves a crucial point with their late revival. Substitute Paulinho fired home in the 80th minute after a lovely reverse pass from Allan Andrade. Then, with three minutes left on the clock, Maxi Falcon's header fell straight to Mauricio who pounced on the opportunity, rifling into the far corner to make it 2-2. 'It was a great game from us, it's difficult to play against one of the best teams in South America,' said Mascherano. 'Maybe at the end we had the game in our hands so the feeling is strange but before the start of the tournament if someone told me we were going to have this kind of performance against these kind of teams I would have signed for it.' Abel Ferreira, the Palmeiras head coach, was highly critical of his team's opening 45 minutes but pleased with their reaction. 'I told them at half-time that it was impossible to do worse than what we did in the first half. We were unable to contain our opponents or put pressure on them up front. But our spirit of fighting until the end was particularly important in the second half, and we were rewarded for that,' he said.

Soccer-Reunion in Atlanta: Messi & Co. set for PSG showdown at Club World Cup
FILE PHOTO: Football Soccer - FC Barcelona v Deportivo Alaves - Spanish King's Cup Final - Vicente Calderon Stadium, Madrid, Spain - 27/5/17 Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Luis Enrique, with their children, celebrate at the end of the match/Reuters / Susana Vera/File Photo MIAMI (Reuters) -Lionel Messi will lead a quartet of former Barcelona players into a meeting with their former coach Luis Enrique when Inter Miami face European champions Paris St Germain in the last 16 of the Club World Cup in Atlanta on Sunday. Messi, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez all played under Luis Enrique in Spain, and were in the side who knocked PSG out of the Champions League last 16 in the 2016-17 season. Miami qualified for the last 16 of the Club World Cup as Group A runners-up with a 2-2 draw against Palmeiras on Monday. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT PSG have certainly moved on from their traumatic Champions League exit in 2017, when they won the first leg in Paris 4-0 but were thrashed 6-1 in the return match in Barcelona. The French side claimed their first Champions League title this season in a campaign masterminded by Luis Enrique, but Messi and Co. will be eager to cause another upset. Suarez, who like Messi spent two seasons at PSG, showed that at 38-year-old he still has the game to score on the big stage, notching Miami's second in their draw with Palmeiras. KEY QUOTES Miami coach Javier Mascherano: "They are probably better than us, but in football you never know. Maybe Sunday will be our day." Miami forward and Man of the Match Luis Suarez: "If we make these mistakes against PSG we will pay a heavy price. Obviously, in this kind of tournament there is always going to be a favourite, that's just a fact. We'll be facing the European champions and we will have to try and take our chances. "Luis Enrique has seen many players and he influenced me a lot. I already had a competitive DNA but he made me even more competitive." (Reporting by Julien Pretot; Editing by Peter Rutherford)
