Pedestrian deaths decrease — but not everywhere
There were fewer pedestrian deaths on U.S. roads in the first half of 2024 compared to a year prior, but nearly 50% more than a decade ago, a new projection finds.
Why it matters: Cities worldwide are trying to reduce pedestrian deaths — so many of which are utterly avoidable — though "Vision Zero" programs, lower speed limits, "traffic calming" road design and more.
Driving the news: 3,304 pedestrians were killed on roads nationwide between January and June 2024, per a new Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) preliminary report.
That's 88 fewer deaths than during the same period in 2023, but 1,072 more than during the same period in 2014.
Stunning stat: " Between the first half of 2014 and 2024, pedestrian deaths have risen at a rate almost seven times faster than population growth," the report finds.
Zoom in: Nebraska (+150%, 6 more deaths), Alaska (+66.7%, 2 more deaths) and Connecticut (+56.5%, 13 more deaths) had the biggest percentage increases in pedestrian deaths in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
Yes, but: States with more people tend to have more overall pedestrian deaths.
When adjusting for population, New Mexico (2.07), Mississippi (1.94) and Nevada (1.9) had the highest rates of pedestrian deaths per 100,000 residents in the first half of 2024.
The per-100,000 rate increased the most in Washington, D.C. (+0.54) in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, while it decreased the most in Wyoming (-0.52).
What they're saying: It's "encouraging to see states with historically higher fatality counts report large percentage decreases in 2024," the report notes, highlighting Tennessee (-30%), Colorado (-21%), and Washington (-19.7%).
What's next: " There are proven strategies to improve pedestrian safety," per GHSA, including "building a system that minimizes pedestrians' exposure to vehicles ... encourages safe road use through education and enforcement, and prioritizes visibility between drivers and pedestrians."

Veterans home chooses veteran for new home in Johnstown
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Veterans Community Panel concluded interviews for the Polacek Veterans Home. This is in part due to JWF Industries announcing the initiative to give a veteran in Cambria or Somerset counties a home at no cost. Applicants had to fit a set of criteria to qualify for the initiative. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: JWF Industries offers free housing for Cambria, Somerset County veterans The Veterans Community Panel consisted of nine representatives from local veteran outreach organizations. The panel consisted of: Mark Fiorito, Special Forces Association Dave Wagner, DAV Savannah Dickey, Somerset County Veterans Affairs Anita Moore, Representing NG/Reserve Veterans Josh Hauser, Veterans Community Initiatives Skip Steiner, American Legion District 20 Dave Seymour, VFW District 26 Kim Porster, VLP Housing Bruce Jordan, NAACP Veteran Committee 'We want to bring a leader, a veteran leader, into a community, give them a home for their contributions and allow them to carry forward and help support the community that they're going to be living in,' Jeff Pounding, the lead of the panel, said. The panel received more applications than expected for the home. Ten candidates were selected for the first round of interviews, followed by selecting the top five from that list for a second round of interviews. 'We've given them the questions already that we're going to ask so they feel comfortable,' Pounding said. 'They've been able to ask their family what they should answer. So when they come in, they don't have to be stressed.' The winner was chosen after the second round of interviews Saturday, but the name has not been released to the public. That person will receive a house on an empty plot of land on Somerset Street in Johnstown. The house design will be presented in front of the Johnstown City Council on June 4, with a vote on the design happening a week after. The construction of the foundation and utility lines will start afterwards. With the help from Hosana Industries, a Christian charitable initiative that was awarded the contracting job, they plan to start construction on the house on July 14 with over 50 veterans helpng to build the structure using a 'blitz build', which Pounding says will take four days to complete the construction of the house. 'We're kind of in the preparation stage of it. We have to consolidate two lots into one so that we have a bigger footprint for the house to sit on and a bigger yard for people to enjoy,' Vision Together 2025 Executive Director Robert Forcey said. The primary objective of the initiative is to address the issue of abandoned properties throughout the city. The veteran's home aims to add a spark to the rest of the area, helping to revamp the neighborhood. 'This past year alone, we've given out $150,000 in grants, $50,000 to new business recruitment grants, $50,000 to existing facade grants for businesses and $50,000 for repairing people's houses here,' Forcey said. 'While we're looking towards the future and trying to build more houses, folks still have to fix the houses that they've got. So we're trying to help out with all of those pieces as we move forward.' Once construction is complete, the house will be dedicated with a ceremony on July 17, the same day the winning family moves in. And over the next six years, the initiative will look to build 21 homes in that timeframe, adding one additional home each year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Marvel's VISION Reportedly Adds Human Version of Spider-Man's E.D.I.T.H. From SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME — GeekTyrant
Marvel's Vision series is quietly assembling one of the most fascinating lineups of characters the MCU has seen in a while, and the latest addition has ties to Tony Stark and Peter Parker. According to reliable scooper Daniel Richtman, Schitt's Creek star Emily Hampshire has joined the cast of Vision as the human form of E.D.I.T.H., the Stark-created AI system first introduced in Spider-Man: Far From Home . If true, it marks a big evolution for the character, who until now has only existed as a voice inside Tony's tech. While Marvel hasn't officially confirmed the casting, Richtman's recent scoop about T'Nia Miller being cast as Jocasta in the show was verified hours later by trades, so this one's likely on the money too. For those who forgot, E.D.I.T.H. was Stark's posthumous gift to Peter Parker, an augmented reality AI defense system housed in a pair of slick sunglasses, granting access to Stark's satellites, drones, and firepower. Things went south when Peter handed it off to Mysterio, and the Department of Damage Control seized it after the London debacle. Originally voiced by Dawn Michelle King, a respected film editor on projects like Ant-Man and Spider-Man: Homecoming , E.D.I.T.H. was never portrayed physically. So casting Hampshire makes sense if the series is bringing her into the flesh. Showrunner Terry Matalas, who previously worked with Hampshire on 12 Monkeys , seems to be leaning into the idea of giving physical identities to familiar AIs. Vision is already stacked with Paul Bettany back in the lead, James Spader returning as Ultron, and appearances from Marvel deep cuts like Faran Tahir reprising his Iron Man role as Raza. Hampshire will join a growing cast that also includes Todd Stashwick, and Ruaridh Mollica (rumored to play Tommy Maximoff). There are also whispers of appearances from Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda and Joe Locke as Billy Maximoff, though that hasen't been confirmed. Bettany teased the show last year, saying, 'We're cooking up something that I'm really excited about.' And when pressed for more details? 'Snitches end up in ditches,' he joked. Vision is set to begin filming in 2025 and premiere on Disney+ in 2026. Whatever form this strange techno-spiritual sequel to WandaVision takes, it sounds like it's embracing some interesting corners of the Marvel Universe.
