Texas man pleads guilty in wrong-way crash that killed Prairieville woman
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A Texas man pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and third-offense DWI after a fatal wrong-way crash killed a 23-year-old woman from Prairieville.The 23rd Judicial District Attorney's Office said Joshua Cannon, 36, entered the plea last week. On Oct. 24, 2023, Louisiana State Police responded to reports of a head-on collision on I-10 Eastbound near mile marker 186 in Ascension Parish.Investigators determined that Cannon, driving a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse, was traveling west in the eastbound lanes when he collided head-on with a 2008 Honda Accord driven by Jaranisha Carter, 23, of Prairieville. Carter was taken to the hospital but later died from her injuries. Cannon had moderate injuries and was also hospitalized.Troopers noted that Cannon showed signs of impairment. He also refused to cooperate during the investigation. Authorities got a search warrant for a blood sample. The attorney's office said the test showed Cannon's blood alcohol concentration was 0.18 g%, more than the legal limit.After being released from the hospital, Cannon was arrested and booked into the Ascension Parish Jail.Cannon's sentencing was delayed, according to the attorney's office. A pre-sentence investigation will take place first. It is tentatively set for Aug. 18.

Man accused of stalking ex-girlfriend, crashing into her car in Baton Rouge arrested
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A Baton Rouge man was arrested on Sunday, May 29, after being accused of stalking a woman and ramming her car. According to an affidavit, officers with the Baton Rouge Police Department were called to a hit-and-run incident in the 2600 block of Coursey Boulevard on Wednesday, May 25. When they arrived, the victim told the officers that her ex-boyfriend, Edward Berryman Jr., 36, intentionally hit her vehicle. She also shared that she has a restraining order against him. The victim told detectives that she was leaving the hair store when Berryman blocked her car in with his black Dodge Challenger. She said she put her car in reverse and exited the parking lot. She later accused Berryman of following her through a neighborhood and ramming the driver's side of her car. Berryman exited the vehicle after the crash, but the victim pulled off. The affidavit states that Berryman then followed her onto Coursey Boulevard, where he hit her vehicle again, running her off the road and disabling her car. At the time of the crash, the victim's 15-year-old child was in the passenger seat. She said she captured the collision on her dashcam. After reviewing the dash camera footage, detectives found it supported the victim's claims. She later explained that the relationship recently ended and that she filed the restraining order in October 2024. While on the scene, detectives saw a Black Challenger with a missing passenger front tire. They took the vehicle in as evidence. Berryman was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated criminal damage to property, stalking, violation of protective orders, and a bench warrant. 2 inmates caught in Texas extradited back to Louisiana; 2 more still on the run
Two of the escaped New Orleans inmates who were caught recently in a high-speed chase in Texas have been extradited back to Louisiana, where officials said they will be held at a secure facility. The 10 inmates escaped on May 16 when officials said they ripped away a toilet and sink unit in a cell and went through a hole in the wall. Two are still on the run as authorities have increased rewards for information leading to their capture to $50,000 each. Jermaine Donald, 42, and Leo Tate, 31, were extradited back to Louisiana on May 30 after they were arrested in Huntsville, Texas, about 375 miles from New Orleans, the Louisiana State Police said. Authorities in Huntsville said they led law enforcement on a chase through the city before they were apprehended. Both will face charges for the jail escape, and Donald was also charged with resisting an officer. The escapees still at large are Antoine Massey, 32, and Derrick Groves, 27. For more than two weeks, they have evaded a massive manhunt and attempts at foiling any assistance they could get from the public, with authorities arresting and charging over a dozen people who allegedly helped inmates break out or stay on the run. The inmates escaped in the early morning hours of May 16, and three were recaptured by the end of the day. A week later, two more were nabbed. Within two weeks, authorities had caught all but two, Groves and Massey. Groves was convicted of two charges of second-degree murder and two charges of attempted second-degree murder in October in connection with a shooting during Mardi Gras in 2018, according to a statement from the district attorney's office. Groves has been awaiting sentencing on a manslaughter charge since October, according to a news release from the governor's office. He also faces a charge of battery against a correctional facility employee, the Associated Press reported, citing court records.
