Pakistan-American's death sentence for beheading girlfriend upheld: ‘victory for all women'
Pakistan 's Supreme Court has upheld the death penalty for a man who beheaded his girlfriend in a case that prompted an explosive reaction from women's rights campaigners.
Pakistani-American Zahir Jaffer, the son of a wealthy industrialist, attacked 27-year-old Noor Mukadam at his sprawling Islamabad mansion
in 2021 after she refused his marriage proposal – torturing her with a knuckle-duster and using a 'sharp-edged weapon' to behead her.
'This is a victory for all the women of Pakistan. It shows that our justice system can deliver justice and should give women more confidence in the legal process,' Shafaq Zaidi, a childhood friend of Mukadam, said outside the court on Tuesday.
'This was our last resort, and it's hard to put into words what this outcome means to us.'
Jaffer, in his early thirties, was convicted of rape and murder
in 2022 , but his legal team appealed arguing that he was suffering from mental health issues.
Justice Hashim Kakar on Tuesday upheld the death penalty for murder but commuted a death penalty for rape to life imprisonment.

Taliban offers amnesty to Afghan refugees, urges them to return home
A top Taliban official said on Saturday that all Afghans who fled the country after the collapse of the former Western-backed government are free to return home, promising they would not be harmed if they come back. Taliban Prime Minister Mohammad Hassan Akhund made the amnesty offer in his message for the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha, also known as the 'Feast of Sacrifice.' Afghans in neighbouring Pakistan who are awaiting resettlement are also dealing with a deportation drive by the Islamabad government to get them out of the country. Almost a million have left Pakistan since October 2023 to avoid arrest and expulsion. 'Afghans who have left the country should return to their homeland,' he said. 'Nobody will harm them.'

Retired Hong Kong priest arrested for alleged sexual assault of minor in 1990s
Hong Kong police have arrested a 66-year-old retired priest on suspicion of sexually assaulting a minor on two occasions more than 30 years ago, the Post has learned. A source said on Saturday that a woman, now 44, filed a police report late last month alleging she had been sexually assaulted twice at a church in Sham Shui Po between September 1993 and March 1994. She was 13 years old at the time. The man was accused of sexually assaulting the minor while she was studying inside the church. The source said the assaults were alleged to have taken place at the Hong Kong & Macau Lutheran Living Stone Church. Management had assisted police with their investigation and helped look into whether there were other potential victims, the insider said. Police said officers had arrested a 66-year-old man in Fanling district on Friday on suspicion of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 16 years of age, buggery with a girl under 21 and indecency with a child under 16. The man has been released on bail pending further investigation, and he must report to police later this month.

9 injured in collision involving taxi, private car near Hong Kong Disneyland
Nine people, including a one-year-old girl, were injured after a taxi and a private car collided near Hong Kong Disneyland on Lantau Island on Saturday. Advertisement The incident occurred at an intersection on Magic Road at 2.21pm, when the driver of the Kowloon-bound private car attempted to make a right turn at a junction before hitting the taxi, which was en route to a hotel along the road, police said. All nine people sustained minor injuries and were sent to North Lantau Hospital for treatment, the force added. Five people, aged between 1 and 59, in the taxi were injured. The 59-year-old driver, surnamed Ma, reported experiencing head pain. All nine victims have been sent to North Lantau Hospital for treatment.
