Roof repair underway at Belle Bennett Auditorium

Yahoo19-03-2025

Efforts by the City of London Tourism and Parks Commission to repair the roof of the Belle Bennett Auditorium on the former Sue Bennett College campus remain underway.
'As of now, we have taken care of the damage that occurred last summer,' said Phil Smith, chair of the London City Tourism Commission. 'There are several other things that we can do cosmetically to the building; we just have to see what that process looks like as far as community involvement and the commission's desire to move forward with any additional expense.'
The building was donated to the tourism commission in the summer of 2024 after there were structural issues with the roof. Commissioners voted to save the structure by replacing the trusses and installing a new roof.
Two new steel trusses were laid for the building Jan. 29, in place of the prior wooden structures, with the intention of providing stronger stability.
'Work is still underway, but the building is sound, solid, and ready for the next steps in becoming a beautiful asset to the London community once again,' City Tourism Director Chris Robinson wrote in a Facebook post.
Those interested in staying updated throughout the process can leave their contact information in this google form: https://forms.gle/TKg5BNkuhLFePtM89.
London City Tourism will potentially partner with the community to host future fundraising events this spring and encourages those who have ideas about fundraising strategies to also fill out the form.
'There have been potential contributors who came forward offering donations to go toward the renovations and we are hoping for more,' Smith stated.
Smith asserted that the commission is approaching the process cautiously and being mindful of 'each dollar spent.'
'It is exciting to think that we may soon have another place where children and adults can study and participate in cultured, art related events in our community,' said Smith. 'Enhancing the opportunities for creativity and art is essential in our region. The future performances and events may substantially impact Tourism. The project is very exciting, however, the funding side is challenging.'
All in all, Smith expressed the excitement of commissioners, stating, 'It's an incredible feeling to think we are restoring a historical structure that's so significant to so many people.'

Customer charged RM30 for mixed rice in JB, then called out by owner over misleading photo angle

Would you pay RM30 for a plate of mixed rice? If your idea of nasi campur still revolves around a budget-friendly meal where you can eat to your heart's content without breaking the bank, it might be time for a reality check. A man in Johor Bahru recently took to Facebook to share his shock over being charged RM30.20 for a single plate of cai peng at Sentosa Curry Rice in Taman Sentosa. In his post, he included a photo of his meal, detailing the items he picked: a piece of curry chicken, some braised pork and egg, plus a serving of curry vegetables. Like most of us, he didn't bother to ask for the price of each dish while piling food onto his plate, thus, was blindsided when it was time to pay. To top it off, the bill included a 6% SST charge. Apparently, this wasn't his first rodeo. He claimed to be a long-time patron, dating back to the shop's humble pushcart beginnings, particularly fond of their fried chicken. So naturally, the RM30 price tag would hit harder. Many netizens chimed in, siding with the man and dropping jokes here and there. But not everyone took his side. A user posted an estimated itemised bill of his meal while calling him out for being 'greedy'. The plot thickened when the eatery's owner responded with a detailed breakdown of the cai peng, which included: Curry chicken (RM6) Rice (RM4) Braised eggs (RM1.50) Curry vegetables (RM4) Braised pork (RM15) Chinese tea (RM1) She also pointed out that he had taken a rather generous helping of pork, something not clearly reflected in his photo, and accused him of using a strategic camera angle to downplay the portion. However, the man wasn't backing down. He responded, insisting that he didn't even order any drinks, throwing the validity of the breakdown into question. The internet remained divided: some argued that RM15 for 10 pieces of pork (RM1.50 each) was fair enough, while others couldn't get over the RM4 charge for plain rice. Rowena Fire closes I-84 eastbound; over 700 homes on level 3 'Go Now' evacuation orders

(This story has been updated to include new information) Eastbound I-84 closed June 11 between mileposts 64 and 82 due to the Rowena Fire, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation and the Wasco County Sheriff's Office. The closure is between Mosier and The Dalles. I-84 and Highway 30 were also closed from Rowena to milepost 82. ODOT advised drivers to find an alternative route. ODOT spokesperson Kacey Davey said there are fires burning on both the Oregon and Washington state sides of the Columbia River Gorge. Davey urged travelers to not drive to the highway closure spots and to check for updates and closure information. "Wildfires are unpredictable and we have no timeline for when I-84 or U.S. 30 may open," Davey said. The sheriff's office said in a Facebook post 733 homes were under level 3 "Go Now" evacuation orders, 1,195 homes were under level 2 "Be Set" and 157 homes were under level 1 "Be Ready." A map for areas under evacuation can be found at: The fire was at least 500 acres as of 5:45 p.m. June 11, according to WatchDuty. It was not immediately clear what caused the fire. Gov. Tina Kotek invoked the Emergency Conflagration Act in response to the fire, allowing the Oregon state fire marshal to mobilize resources. The state fire marshal is mobilizing structural firefighters and an incident management team for the fire, according to a news release. Three task forces were set to respond June 11 and three more are set to arrive the morning of June 12. According to the release, the Oregon State Fire Marshal Green Team will work with the Central Oregon Fire Management Service Type 3 team. Areas under level 3 "Go Now" evacuation orders included: Rowena Ferry Road east to River Road; Seven Mile Hill Road to Mountain View Drive, south to Chenowith Creek Road and Browns Creek Road east to West Seventh Street. Areas under level 2 "Be Ready" included: Evacuation Snipes, west to Chenoweth Loop Road, Chenowith Creek Road to Browns Creek Road. Areas under level 1 "Be Set" included: Port area of The Dalles. A temporary shelter is available at The Dalles Middle School, 1100 E 12th St., The Dalles, OR., 97058. The Wasco County Fairgrounds is open for livestock and horses and is located at 81849 Fairgrounds Road, Tygh Valley, OR., 97063. 'This early season conflagration should come as a reminder to Oregonians to be ready for wildfire,' State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple said in a news release. 'The predictions for this summer are extremely concerning. I am asking everyone to take that extra minute to mindful of the conditions and remember it takes a single spark to ignite a disaster.' Heritage Sin Kee Chicken Rice closes after 2 months at new outlet

After just over 2 months of operations at Sims Vista Market & Food Centre, Heritage Sin Kee Chicken Rice closed for good on 24 May 2025. The reason for their closure was not specified, simply stating they've ceased operations 'till further notice'. We can't talk about chicken rice in Singapore without mentioning the legendary Sin Kee Chicken Rice, first founded at Margaret Drive in 1971 by Mr Leong Fook Wing. Today, there are 6 stalls islandwide that share the 'Sin Kee' name, and while not all are directly connected, some trace their roots back to the OG. One such stall is the aforementioned Heritage Sin Kee Chicken Rice, run by one of the late founder's sons, Niven. Before rebranding to its current name, this stall had undergone many variations, from Uncle Chicken Rice, Sin Kee Famous Chicken (featured in the Singapore episode of Netflix's Street Food: Asia!), to Sin Kee Chicken Rice (Margaret Drive). Heritage Sin Kee Chicken Rice's closure was made known by the posters Niven plastered across his stall front — one placed directly on his face on the signage. He uploaded it to Facebook with a sardonic caption, 'My face so 乞人憎 (qi ren zeng). Must sealed up', a phrase that loosely translates to 'so annoying, people can't stand the sight of it.' A separate Facebook post by a netizen on 10 Jun garnered mixed reactions in the comments. While some loyal customers were disappointed by this sudden news, others were noting Niven's pattern of relatively short stints at various locations. Since Heritage Sin Kee Chicken Rice is now closed, will Niven open another outlet under a new name? Only time will tell. Until then, you can still get your fix of the OG Sin Kee Chicken Rice recipe at his brother's stall, Margaret Drive Chicken Rice at Holland Drive. 15 best 'clucking good' chicken rice stalls in Singapore [Apr 2025 update] The post Heritage Sin Kee Chicken Rice closes after 2 months at new outlet appeared first on
