Carlos Mendoza, Griffin Canning and Pete Alonso on Mets big bounce-back win over Dodgers
After losing a tough extra-inning game on Tuesday, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was impressed with his team coming right back with an emphatic 6-1 win over LA on Wednesday. Leading the way was starter Griffin Canning who dominated the vaunted Dodger lineup, striking out seven hitters over six shutout innings and allowing just three hits. Offensively, Pete Alonso continued to deliver with men in scoring position, crushing two home runs and driving in five of the six Mets runs. Alonso though, was already looking ahead to the series finale saying "glad to get this one but we have another big one tomorrow."

DENVER (AP) — When he re-signed with the New York Mets last winter, Pete Alonso saw an opportunity to become the team's career leader in home runs and multihomer games. He checked one record off his list Sunday with a pair of two-run shots in a 13-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies — and the burly first baseman is closing in on the other. Advertisement Alonso's 23rd multihomer game broke a tie with Darryl Strawberry for the most in Mets history. The four-time All-Star and two-time Home Run Derby champion now has 243 career homers, passing David Wright (242) for second place on the franchise list — nine behind Strawberry. 'Honestly, it's just one of those things where I can't really be too involved in it,' Alonso said. 'For me, I just want to win. Whatever happens, capitalize on certain pitches in the zone, then I'll get my chance to do so by helping my team win. That's always been the focus.' Alonso hit two of New York's season-high six homers to help complete a 5-2 trip. He has six home runs and two multihomer games in June after going deep just four times in 27 games in May. He went 5 for 14 during the weekend series and has raised his batting average from .288 to .301 over the last eight games. 'There's a lot to like about his bat right now,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'Just dominating pitches in the strike zone. That's who he is. We know that the power's always been there, but now we're looking at a really good hitter.' Advertisement Alonso wasn't the only Mets player with a banner day. Juan Soto had three hits and walked three times to reach base in all six plate appearances. He became the first New York player to accomplish that feat since Alonso on Aug. 15, 2019, at Atlanta. 'It's not easy to do at the big league level,' Mendoza said. 'You get six times at the plate and you find a way to get on base. Finally getting results, but I feel the at-bat quality has been there.' Alonso's path toward becoming the Mets' career home run leader began when he set the major league record for rookies with 53 in 2019. Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot tears ACL, will miss rest of 2025 season
Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot will miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season after suffering a torn ACL in her right knee during Chicago's eventual 27-point loss to the Indiana Fever, the team announced Sunday. Vandersloot sustained the injury at the 5:29 mark of the first quarter of Saturday night's loss to Indiana while driving to the basket. Teammates gathered around her on the court as she lay on the floor in pain, and Vandersloot was eventually carried to the locker room before quickly being ruled out for the remainder of the contest. 'She's our captain and our leader out there, so obviously, it's a huge blow.' 'We're thinking of her,' Liberty coach Sandy Brondello told reporters on Sunday. 'She's playing great. She's the leader out there.' Heading into this season, Vandersloot had already been Chicago's all-time assists leader, and she became the franchise's all-time leading scorer in late May, passing her wife, and fellow former Sky guard, Allie Quigley on the Sky's scoring list. Vandersloot started the first seven games of Chicago's season, averaging 10.6 points and 5.3 assists. Her injury will likely thrust Van Lith, the No. 11 pick in April's draft, into the Sky's starting lineup. Van Lith replaced Vandersloot after the injury occurred and played a career-high 26 minutes in Saturday's loss, which was the first WNBA game at the United Center. The Sky will also likely lean more on guards Ariel Atkins and Rachel Banham as they look to proceed and draw the most out of their developing frontcourt of Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese. Their first test without Vandersloot comes Tuesday, against her former team, as the Sky travel to Brooklyn to play the Liberty.
