Potential Group 1 star Beau Dazzler who can be ‘beaten a furlong in trials'

News.com.au28-04-2025

He is the horse who often gets lapped in trials but can deliver the father and daughter training team of Tony and Maddy Sears their first Group 1 during the Queensland winter carnival.
Beau Dazzler will resume on Saturday in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) which is the first plank of a mission leading to the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm on May 31.
Bookmakers rate him highly, as the $11 third pick in Derby betting, as the family training team looks to score their first Group 1.
There may be even bigger fish to fry later this year, with Tony Sears holding the three-year-old colt in such high esteem as a staying prospect that big goals in the Melbourne spring could yet be contemplated.

It's just as well though that Beau Dazzler, last seen putting two victories on the bounce in December including a Group 3 event at Eagle Farm, knows the difference between trials and races.
In his official trials in his young career he has been beaten 7.2 lengths, 4.5 lengths, 4.8 lengths, 18.7 lengths and 12 lengths.

'He has always gone bad in trials, I've seen him get tailed off and be beaten a furlong,' Tony Sears chuckled.
'But I really think he is a good horse and he is a true stayer.
'You don't know, he could end up anywhere in any race over a distance.
'Anything over 2000m is a bonus to him.
'You could possibly see him in the spring carnival.
'It would be terrific to win a Group 1 and it would be unbelievable to win it in partnership with Maddysen.
'It would also be great for connections, all of a sudden they would have a valuable colt.'
Beau Dazzler has been racing on raw ability for most of his career but the winter carnival will test whether he could be a high calibre stayer.
Team Sears will stick with Queensland jockey Jag Guthmann-Chester for Beau Dazzler's return run in the $350,000 Guineas at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
It is unlikely Beau Dazzler will be fighting out the finish over the 1600m trip – but watch for him late.
'He is pretty fit but I think he will probably just be warming up late in the Guineas,' Sears said.
'He has turned into quite a stayer.
'You probably won't see him at his best until the Derby.'
"I think he'll be a force to be reckoned with in the Qld Derby"

Meanwhile, Sears indicated established stable star Yellow Brick would resume in next month's Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m at Doomben) en route to the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap.
The training team would have loved to have deployed Yellow Brick in the Stradbroke in previous years, but his rating of 107 will this year guarantee him a spot in Queensland's most prestigious race.
'He will go second-up into the Stradbroke because most of the time, he performs best second-up,' Sears said.
Yellow Brick is rated a $15 chance in early betting on the Stradbroke.

Apart from Beau Dazzler, one to watch from the Sears' stable at Eagle Farm on Saturday is unbeaten two-year-old colt Yuna Is Pierata.
The young son of Pierata will contest the Listed Dalrello Stakes (1000m) after destroying his opposition on debut at the Ipswich midweeks earlier this month.

2025 Stradbroke Handicap: War Machine unders, owner says

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Prominent owner Rupert Legh says his Stradbroke Handicap favourite War Machine is silly odds in the betting market and he couldn't possibly back him in the famous Queensland Group 1 on Saturday. Legh knows he has a talented and progressive horse on his hands but can't believe bookmakers have the Lindsay Park galloper the raging $2.70 favourite with a huge gap to anything else in the Stradbroke market. While War Machine was dominant in winning the Group 3 BRC Sprint, Legh said he was unproven at Group 1 level and was far from the finished product. He questioned whether War Machine's stranglehold on Stradbroke betting spoke more to the quality of the field in the $3m race. It doesn't shape as a vintage Stradbroke. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'I won't be backing him, I think he's 'unders',' Legh told Racenet. 'Is that a true price? 'I think it must be a reflection of the actual quality of the race. 'Given another three or four starts with some more experience, he will get better and better this horse. 'But is still unproven in this sort of class.' • Stradbroke Handicap field and news In War Machine's only previous Group 1 attempt, he finished 11th when being beaten almost eight lengths by fellow Stradbroke contender Kimochi in last November's Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield. War Machine races in Legh's striking colours and the owner is aiming to score his fourth Stradbroke. He has previously claimed Stradbroke glory with Tofane (2021), Santa Ana Lane (2018) and Mr Baritone (2008). Legh has never been on track at Eagle Farm to witness any of his Stradbroke wins and he said maybe it was a good luck omen that he would not be there again, instead heading to England for the famous Royal Ascot carnival. Lindsay Park is searching for its first Stradbroke but it should not be forgotten that the Hayes boys – Ben, JD and Will – got to train War Machine after legendary trainer Mike Moroney's sad passing earlier this year. • 'Pressure is your friend': Cejay's tip to conjure Stradbroke fairytale It would be an emotional moment if War Machine won and Legh said his great mate Moroney always thought he had a special horse in the making. 'We got War Machine out of New Zealand and Mike gave me a call one day and said 'I think I have got the right horse for us',' Legh recalled. 'He had a big opinion of him, he really liked the horse. 'He is a horse who used to over-race a bit and the reality is, he is still learning his craft. 'Mike thought he was a horse who could one day stand up and run in a big race, but could he get to a Group 1? 'No owner or trainer knows until you go through the grades and start racing against better horses, which is what he is doing. 'He couldn't have done any more than what he did last start, it was a pretty dominant sort of win. 'You would like to think there's more to come and he will only get better. 'But this is a big Group 1 – it's a Stradbroke.' War Machine was elevated to Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap favouritism after his dominant win in the BRC Sprint. Picture: Grant Peters / Trackside Photography • Grafterburners primed for JJ Atkins decider against Cool Archie War Machine has won five of his 12 starts and rocketed into Stradbroke favouritism when destroying the Group 3 BRC Sprint field in a blistering two-and-a-half length win. War Machine carried 56.5kg in the BRC Sprint and now drops to 53kg in the Stradbroke with Tim Clark to ride. The four-year-old gelding, a son of Harry Angel, drew barrier 13 at Tuesday's night's barrier draw function. 'I don't actually mind barrier 13, it gives Tim Clark more options,' co-trainer Ben Hayes said. 'There will be a lot of horses crossing from out wide, so he should be able to get into that three-wide line and get a nice run in transit.' Group 1 roughie king Ryan Maloney strikes again in Queensland Derby with Maison Louis

Jockey Ryan Maloney seized a sliding doors moment to again prove the king of the Group 1 roughies, as Maison Louis pinched the Queensland Derby for proud former Queenslander John O'Shea. It wasn't quite the blowout result that Maloney conjured in last year's Group 1 Queensland Oaks when Socks Nation shocked everyone including Maloney as a $101 winner. But Maison Louis, trained by O'Shea and his training partner Tom Charlton, was sent out at $21 in a Derby which was set alight by a mid-race move by James McDonald on favourite Belle Detelle who shot to the lead. Belle Detelle couldn't go on with it, finishing seventh, as the O'Shea team grabbed the quinella with King Of Thunder ($12) finishing runner-up. The Derby had been meant to be raced seven days earlier with Ben Melham poised to ride Maison Louis. But with Melham pre-planning a family holiday, Maloney made the most of his opportunity to score another Group 1. The former Victorian jockey now has six career Group 1 wins and four of them have come in his adopted Queensland home. O'Shea was born and raised in Mareeba, Queensland, and loves few things more than having Group 1 success in the Sunshine State including winning the Stradbroke Handicap with Private Steer in 2003. • What the jockeys said: 2025 Queensland Derby 'I'm a proud Queenslander, not just a Queenslander, so it's a big thrill today,' O'Shea said. 'He's just a tough, resilient little horse and he's come from obscurity to win a Queensland Derby so we're very excited. 'He's just been a progressive horse by a top young stallion in Super Seth. 'I think the key was that he was able to cope with the workload.' The rescheduled Derby lost a runner before the start with one of the fancies, South Australian visitor Party Crasher, being taken out at the barriers. It meant Craig Williams was without a ride. But there was a hungry Queensland jockey looking to seize his chance on Maison Louis. Ryan Maloney returns to the winner's stall on Maison Louis. Picture: Trackside Photography • Dale ponders shot at Stradbroke with Front Page 'It was a very dawdling run Derby, and when J-Mac sort of made his move at the half-mile, he increased the tempo, but not by a hell of a lot,' Maloney said. 'When he got the gap, he pinned his ears back and was just tough as nails. 'Last week, my (Derby) emergency got a run. 'But this week, I didn't have a Derby ride initially and luckily I picked it up. 'It is amazing what a week can do.' Mark Zahra, riding the winner's stablemate King Of Thunder, thought he had the race at his mercy. 'He ran really well, I thought we had it won but the stablemate just beat him,' Zahra said. Statuario, trained by Emma-Lee and David Browne, started well fancied at $5 but was never in the picture and finished 14th and beaten 10 lengths. 'Very disappointing,' jockey John Allen said. 'We never got into a good rhythm, and we were always just on one rein. 'We struggled from the 500m mark.'
