Reports: Fenway Sports Group trying to sell minority stake in Penguins

Reuters28-01-2025

January 28 - Fenway Sports Group is looking to sell a minority share of the Pittsburgh Penguins, multiple media outlets reported Monday.
The Boston-based conglomerate hasn't revealed how much of the Penguins it plans to sell, but reports indicated that the group still plans on being the majority owner.
This isn't the first time Fenway Sports Group has sold part of a team to outside investors, as it dealt a minority stake of Liverpool, an English Premier League club, to Dynasty Equity, which is based out of New York.
Along with the Penguins and Liverpool, Fenway Sports Group also owns the Boston Red Sox, the New England Sports Network, NASCAR's RFK Racing and Boston Common Golf of the TMRW Golf League (TGL).
Fenway Sports Group spent $900 million to grab control of the Penguins in 2021, taking over for previous owners Ron Burkle and Mario Lemieux, who established himself as a franchise centerpiece by spending his entire 17-year NHL career in Pittsburgh.
Lemieux has still been involved with the organization, even after Fenway purchased the Penguins.
Pittsburgh entered Monday 20-23-8 on the season (48 points).

Liverpool 'get green light' to complete huge £126m Florian Wirtz deal

Liverpool have already been busy in the summer transfer market with the signing of Jeremie Frimpong and are now closing in on a move for his Bayer Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz Liverpool have moved a step closer to sealing a sensational deal for Florian Wirtz, with Bayer Leverkusen having now granted their permission for the attacking midfielder to complete a dream move to Anfield. The reigning Premier League champions have been credited with an interest in the German since the end of the season. It was thought that they were set to face competition from Manchester City and Bayern Munich, but they both dropped out of the race for Wirtz's signature. ‌ Liverpool have since been locked in negotiations with Leverkusen in an attempt to secure an agreement - and it now appears that they have managed just that. ‌ According to reports in Belgium, the Bundesliga side have given Wirtz the 'green light' to complete his move to Anfield. The clubs have agreed a fee of €150m (£126m) for Wirtz's services with personal terms already agreed. Former Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller had recently given an update on talks and suggesting he felt positive that a move would eventually be completed. 'It's no secret that he'd like to go to Liverpool,' Voller told DAZN (via Sport1). 'I know the clubs are negotiating with each other. [But with] transfers like this [it's] often the case that it takes a while until an agreement is finally reached. Of course, in the end, you have the feeling it will go through. 'Florian Wirtz has proven that he is a very, very valuable player. Not only for Bayer Leverkusen but also for the national team. That's why he costs a few euros more.' Meanwhile, Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard also shared his feelings on the Reds' potential deal for Wirtz and appeared to be a big fan. He said: 'There are rumours obviously, Florian Wirtz. ‌ 'A big talent who's done fantastic for Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen. He's got a huge future in front of him, so if Liverpool is the place for him, let's hope we can make it happen.' Should a deal be completed, Wirtz would be the second star to swap Bayer Leverkusen for Liverpool. Arne Slot 's side also completed a move for fullback Jeremie Frimpong, who was signed for around £35m. Liverpool's business does not appear likely to end there either. The Reds are also closing in on a deal for Armin Pecsi from Puskas Akademia for £1.5m. They are also hopeful of signing his Hungarian counterpart Milos Kerkes from Bournemouth. The Cherries have put a £45m asking price on the left-back ahead of next season. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Thierry Henry's warning to Arsenal and Chelsea over signing 'amazing' £60m star

Hugo Ekitike, a top transfer target for Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal, can be a 'frustrating' player Thierry Henry has warned. The three Premier League giants are all in the market for a new centre-forward this summer, with Arsenal's need for a prolific goalscorer well-documented. Chelsea have already signed Liam Delap from Ipswich Town but would be interested in adding another striker to their roster, which could well spell the end for Nicolas Jackson's time at Stamford Bridge. As for Liverpool, it has long been clear that Darwin Nunez is not in Arne Slot's plans with the Uruguayan likely to leave Anfield. Ekitike is a name on all of their radars following an explosive season at Eintracht Frankfurt where he recorded 34 goal contributions in 48 games across all competitions. Valued at £60million, the striker has been coached at France youth level by Arsenal legend Henry, who, according to Micah Richards, likes what he sees – but there is a caveat. 'In terms of Ekitike, I've spoken to Thierry Henry about him a lot,' Manchester City hero Richards told The Rest is Football podcast. 'He says he's not [necessarily] a frustrating player, but one minute he looks amazing and the next minute he doesn't really do the basics very well. 'But he said if he gets it right and improves then his ceiling could be very, very high.' Reports suggest Chelsea are leading the race for Ekitike, who turns 23 in June and that actually might be a good thing for Liverpool, as Richards isn't certain he's the right fit for the Reds. Appearances: 48 Goals: 22 Minutes per goal: 166 Assists: 12 He added: 'It depends on how they want to play. Do they want a striker who can stretch or they do they want a striker who is going to come to feet and interlink play? 'Ekitike is not bad on the ball but he's more of a stretch striker than a [Roberto] Firmino coming in deep and linking play. More Trending 'Where does Florian Wirtz fit into that? Where does Dominik Szoboszlai fit into that? Where does Luis Diaz potentially fit into that. If they get Wirtz I think they may be looking for more a player who can drop and Diaz can play a little bit deeper. He played a lot as a No.9 this season. 'But talent wise he's definitely got enough to add to this Liverpool side.' Wirtz seems primed to join Liverpool but only if the Reds meet Bayer Leverkusen's £120m asking price and it's possible the attacking midfielder could be deployed as a centre-forward under Slot. Additionally, Benjamin Sesko appears to be Mikel Arteta's first-choice with talks between Arsenal and RB Leipzig progressing well, all of which could clear the way for Chelsea to sign Ekitike. Florian Wirtz to Liverpool is 'considered a done deal' - as new report reveals when £120m-rated star's medical could take place

Florian Wirtz's transfter to Liverpool is 'considered a done deal' with the Premier League champions set to wrap up their second summer signing. Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen have reportedly agreed a deal which will see the playmaker sign a five-year contract, where he is expected to earn up to £18.5million a year. The Reds remain in negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen over a deal for the 22-year-old and while talks are ongoing, an agreement is considered certain, according to Bild. Leverkusen want £120million and Liverpool have offered £109m but Wirtz has made it clear he wants the move. Wirtz looks set to complete his medical next week and will link up with the squad for pre-season in July. The Germany star has been convinced by Arne Slot 's clear plan of where he will play in Liverpool's set-up as a No 10. More to follow.
