500 Festival confirms participant died after finish of mini-marathon
A participant died following the finish of the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon on May 3. The organization would not confirm whether the person had finished the race. Their identity has not been released, pending a next-of-kin notification from the Marion County Coroner's Office.
"Our deepest condolences go out to the individual's family and friends," a spokesperson for the 500 festival said. "This loss is felt across our organization and the entire running community."
There were 24 calls for medical services during the race, most for injuries and exhaustion, according to Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services. That doesn't include people treated on-site at a medical tent.
While sudden deaths during endurance events are relatively rare — roughly 1 per 100,000 runners — they're not unheard of. Medical literature shows that underlying cardiac conditions like arrhythmia and weather-related factors like heat stroke are among the most notable risks.
Stopping points with cool drinks and shade are key to preventing heat illness. There were 16 aid stations along the race course, one providing gel nutritional supplements, a spokesperson said.
The weather May 3 was mild, with temperatures in the 50s and low 60s. Still, runner Giada Mirelli said the 2.5 mile loop around the racetrack was hot and humid as the bright sun evaporated the morning's rain from the asphalt.
"I couldn't even feel any wind, and I actually got goosebumps on the Speedway, which is not a good sign," Mirelli said. Developing clammy skin with goosebumps despite hot conditions is a symptom of heat exhaustion, according to Mayo Clinic.
The Mini-Marathon has happened annually since 1977, with a virtual event in 2020. The 13.1-mile course begins in downtown Indianapolis, loops around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and then returns downtown.

There's a strong chance for showers and thunderstorms Saturday into Sunday around Indianapolis, according to the National Weather Service, meaning LGBTQ+ Hoosiers might want to bring an umbrella if they go out this weekend to Pride. Parade and concert attendees Saturday should take an umbrella and bring a poncho just in case, according to Cody Moore, a local meteorologist with NWS in Indianapolis. "It does look like we have rain moving in for much of the day," Moore said. "Scattered showers, or numerous showers and thunderstorms," adding Indianapolis has a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms during the daytime with a chance for dry spells later in the evening. Moore said the exact timing of rain showers in the Indianapolis metro area isn't clear as of yet. He advised Hoosiers to keep an eye on the forecast the closer it gets to the end of the week. IndyStar reached out Tuesday to representatives with Indy Pride, responsible for organizing the annual parade and concert series, and inquired about what attendees could expect given Saturday's forecast. IndyStar is currently awaiting their response. Moore recommended Hoosiers attending Pride have a plan in case storms become severe. "If you see lightning or hear thunder, make sure you head indoors. Being outside is definitely not safe and poses a threat," Moore said. Attempted murder arrests after two hit-and-runs
Five teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a stolen Mini Cooper was allegedly deliberately driven at people on bikes. The car was involved in a hit-and-run after being driven into two boys riding a Sur-Ron electric motorbike at about 12:30 BST on Thursday on Teyfant Road in Bristol, Avon and Somerset Police said. At about 17:30 BST the same day it was also seen following a 19-year-old man on a scrambler-type off-road bike along Fulford Road, before colliding with him on Hareclive Road. The man was taken to hospital with facial injuries, while the two boys on the electric motorbike did not sustain serious injuries. All five suspects have been released on bail. Insp Terry Murphy said: "We are keeping an open mind about this investigation and at this time we believe the incidents are linked and we're treating the collisions as a deliberate act." As well as attempted murder, one 16-year-old suspect was further arrested on suspicion of threatening a person with an offensive weapon, and for possessing a weapon for discharge of noxious liquid. Four of the suspects, two aged 18, one aged 17 and one aged 16, were additionally arrested on suspicion of having a corrosive substance in a public place and possession of a knife in a public place. Detectives are calling on anyone who saw the Mini in the area that day, saw either collision or who may have relevant dashcam or doorbell footage, to contact them. Insp Murphy said: "We want to reassure the community that we're carrying out a full and thorough investigation and we are taking these incidents extremely seriously." He added that there would be additional patrols by neighbourhood policing teams in the area in the coming days, as well as patrols by the mounted unit and the roads policing team.
